Apply Raman spectroscopy to #peatland cores and experimentally burned samples to reconstruct fire intensity changes throughout the past millennia- sounds like a great project!
After Linley et al. (2022) suggested a standardized definition (> 10,000 ha extent) to reduce ambiguity, a new perspective by Stoof et al. (2023) recommends not using the term at all in science: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/geb.13791
I'm a fan of clear definitions and standardization of #terminology, but at the same point, also wondering if we really need a special term for fires of a certain extent?
Last week I had the chance to talk about Siberian #wildfires at #Hokkaido University's Arctic Research Center! 🔥❄️ One aim for my stay in #Sapporo is increasing collaboration of Japanese and German high latitudes research, and I'm very grateful for this opportunity - already made some new connections!

Canada just evacuated a city of 20,000 people because of the wildfires devastating the country, but when people turn to Facebook for emergency updates, they get caught up in Meta’s news ban.
It shows how little the company really cares about its users.
I just got back from the grocery store, and the fire smoke is so bad. My eyes are hurting. It is just gross out here. Coming home, I had a news alert on my phone warning that the air is hazardous. I agree.🤢 #wildfiresmoke#wildfires#selfie#trans
"Global burned area is decreasing, so #ClimateChange does not exacerbate #wildfires" - did you ever hear this argument, possibly continuing to label reports on recent catastrophic wildfires as "alarmist"? 🔥
As wildfires are ravaging Attica, 🇬🇷 requested the activation of the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism yesterday.
We are responding by:
✈️ deploying 4 Canadairs from our fleet based in France and Italy;
👩🚒 👨🚒 sending three firefighting teams from Poland, Romania and Slovakia for a total of 220 firefighters and 65 vehicles.
In addition, three pre-deployed firefighting teams from Romania, Bulgaria and Malta are already in action.
@EU_Commission
Canada would be more than happy to help to thank you for the assistance received lately (If only we had #Wildfires under control & could spare teams & equipment)
