I endured my first genuine lockdown at school today. It was endless and terrifying. An hour of hiding while the police handled an armed intruder on campus—on the playground, not inside the school. I didn’t see the armed intruder, but I did watch cops with AR15s in the ready position jiggle the door handles to check if they were locked.
In the end everyone was safe & uninjured, but we all were shaken. Makes me secondguess my job choice. But the kids? They’re required to be here. My lesson this week was unintentionally a propos: how to self-regulate with box-breathing. #today#teaching#libraries
#Today, I am celebrating my 4 years without flying ✈️.
The #Earth’s #climate is perturbed by #human activites. One of the easiest things to do towards #sustainability is to cut air travels. Thus, 4 years ago, I cut my frequent flyer cards and decided to #StayGrounded, using only low-#carbon travel means such as #train.
@AlexSanterne@StayGrounded_net@labos1point5@academicchatter When I was a kid in the 80s, we travelled by train to Poland to see my mums family. In fairness it was more for economic reasons as budget airlines weren’t a thing back then. It took two days and being a kid, I hated it, though crossing the Berlin Wall (still up in those days) was interesting.
I build and repair instruments. It matters a lot to me. Proper measurements determine if the instrument stays together and plays in tune. Play any stringed instrument with the intonation off by 1/64 and you well hear it. The metric system reduces computation time and errors. But, like you said, it doesn't matter to you. Okay.
If you make and repair musical instruments you work to fit, not a ruler. It is much more accurate. Except frets which should be with a square root of 12 ruler not one marked in a normal unit (I've never seen one of these!). Or more likely you use a machinist tool which is marked in thousandths not fractions.
Don't get me wrong, I use metric for engineering. However most of the people who say metric is better are using incorrect arguments.
@DrGeof@academicsunite@academicchatter but do you ever get the feeling that if we didn’t have email we could actually get so much more accomplished? Maybe we don’t need 150 emails OR meetings. Maybe we should just leave each other in peace!
At my school the worst offenders (i.e., those who steal the bulk of my time) are the administrators. They seem to thrive on wasting faculty time with pointless meetings.
Finally at home. So are my cats. 🤗 Now I just want to be at home without any scheduled plans. It would be nice to go kayaking some day, but that's about it. I still have one week holiday left. #today#catsofmastodon
Good morning. More Summer adventures with Passion Flowers. Several more blooms appeared yesterday, some lovely some not so much. Sure attracted the bees though. I’m told hot sun and cool nights are both threats to these plants yielding full flowering and fruit. #Summer#Photography#PassionFlowers#flowers#Bloomscrolling#Chicago#Today
