This is a sumptuous piece of linguistic worldbuilding, that explores the relationship between subjectivity and collectivity, through well-imagined characters and exciting plotting. #books#bookstodon#sf#sciencefiction@bookstodon
Dang, Seth Dickinson's 'Exordia' switched genres real fast there!
We started with an introspective, meditative ontological-philosophical character-based meeting of minds, and now suddenly aliens are dropping bombs and EMPs are razing civilization to the ground and we're in a military sci-fi rah rah defend against the invading aliens hoo-wah! thriller.
I am already 60% in on The Mote in God's Eye by Niven and Pournelle, and it's been fantastic so far. I haven't really read a "first contact" novel other than Contact Harvest from the Halo franchise.
The #Kindle edition of "Shards" is now available for #free on Amazon's various international storefronts. This will be the case until October 4th, so get while the getting's good.
@markdevries@bookstodon@horror@scifi Sadly, I haven't had much luck publishing eBooks anywhere else. My first two novels for example were available on other platforms such as Apple Books and Google Play for years but never sold enough to justify keeping them there when compared to being Amazon exclusive via Kindle Unlimited. Fortunately, things aren't quite so locked down on the print side of things, at least for paperbacks, and those can now often be found in (or ordered by) various places.
#SciFi books are rare in school even though they help kids better understand science
#ScienceFiction can lead people to be more cautious about the potential consequences of innovations. It can help people think critically about the ethics of science. Researchers have also found that sci-fi serves as a positive influence on how people view #science.
Okay, now I want to know if there are any academic journals devoted to speculative fiction. I know there are the anthologies like BtVS and Philosophy (or the book I have on my TBR, the Religions of Star Trek).
If there isn't, must look up what it takes to start one, because that would certainly fall under the umbrella of something I'm working on.
@mycotropic@SteveClough@KitMuse@aram@electricarchaeo@bookstodon I mean, I did not provide a comprehensive list of everything I mentioned. I did mention Inception, too, even though its version of the dreaming argument is incredibly stupid.
