My life has been a long strange journey. Like many of us, the challenges have broken and scarred me and the joys have softened and mended me.

So far, I'm still curious about what's next for me, my companions, our world.

Odd thought - is there a book review site that focuses on the simple yet not so simple question of which edition of a book is likely the best? Ie comparing physical print to ebook to audiobook and coming up with an opinion as to which edition is the best (and why) relative to the others.

Perhaps with nuance like some ebook editions might be recommended only if you use a color screen / tablet for graphics heavy works but not if you use a B&W ebook reader

@Rycaut I'm curious about this too

I just finished The Terraformers by @annaleen and went right back to the beginning to read again. Rich in characters, landscapes, action, imagination, relationships, and possibilities. Fierce and loving.

@KT @bookstodon There's intelligence in all things as long as we appreciate that human intelligence isn't the standard of measurement.

@bookstodon I'm looking for book recommendations for an 11yo who reads at a much more advanced level. He likes sci-fi. He has read the Hitchhiker's Guide series and loved them. I think he would enjoy some more 'hard' sci-fi as well. He needs something challenging but without subject matter that is too mature. Thanks for any help!

@rabbit_fighter @bookstodon Ursula LeGuin's Western Shore series and Diane Duane's Wizard series which has both hard science and fantasy elements. Also Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series.
I honestly can't recommend Enders books for someone so young.

@philip_cardella @rabbit_fighter @bookstodon This reminds me of how fascinating Jules Verne's books were for me at that age.

@philip_cardella @rabbit_fighter @bookstodon It's been a while (50 years) since I've read him. The racism unfortunately makes sense 😒

@rabbit_fighter @bookstodon I know you've had a ton of recommendations, and I want to add in two books by Darcy Little Badger: A Snake Falls to Earth and Elatsoe.

@bookstodon folks, do you listen to audiobooks? If so:

  • Do you have favorite narrators? Or the opposite? Ever started or quit listening to something because of the voice?
  • if you’re talking about a book, do you say you’ve read it?

CuriousMagpie,

@lunalein @bookstodon My favorite narrator is Kevin Free (murderbot & ballad of black tom).
For nonfiction, I like listening to authors read their own work (braiding sweetgrass, h is for hawk)
When listening to an audiobook I say, "I read the book"

@lunalein @bookstodon I read it after James Rebanks The Shepherd's Life. I'm eagerly awaiting his wife Helen's new book - The Shepherd's Wife, it's been getting great reviews.
