Our dreampunk saga flies onward! "Guardian" (Glitch 14) defensively hovers over the increasingly intertwined lives of a ragtag bunch of denizens in cyberpunk hellhole NYC.
Glitch 14 is part of our Patron-exclusive bonus series of weekly bonus tales. It pairs with 14. "Bee". (The #'s always match).
@bookstodon I'm looking for book recommendations for an 11yo who reads at a much more advanced level. He likes sci-fi. He has read the Hitchhiker's Guide series and loved them. I think he would enjoy some more 'hard' sci-fi as well. He needs something challenging but without subject matter that is too mature. Thanks for any help! #sciencefiction#bookstodon
I briefly mentioned 86 on @darnelltv (regarding killer robots), but 86 (which can be watched on Crunchyroll) is a diamond 💎 in the rough, whose story at best can be described as bittersweet.
The story has an “Eastern European” feel to it, & at first glance, it seems as if this is a misplaced drama where robot drones fight other robot drones from rival nations.
However, what is revealed is that the Republic of San Magnolia forced those born with colored hair to fight on the front lines against a hostile robot/cybernetic army (you will understand why I call it robot/cybernetic once you progress further through the series).
While the silver-haired citizens enjoy the highlights of life, their colored-haired former neighbors are dying awful deaths against a mechanical foe they know little about.
This is an emotionally disturbing anime, so I would not recommend children watching it (there is not much gore, but there is a lot of death in the show).
Racism & discrimination are significant themes of 86, but it does showcase a redemptive side that is revealed towards the end (you will like it).
If you are into serious, political SciFi war dramas, then this anime is definitely for you!
@mjjmori@bookstodon Huge fan of The Expanse, never touched the books. They are on my immediate to read list, this was my intro I guess. Story was good. Even as a short, don’t think it’s something I’d read again but I also wouldn’t mind the idea worked into a full length story.
This Kickstarter for a Ukrainian science fiction anthology looks great.
They already secured a grant form the Ukrainian Book Institute for many stories from Ukrainian authors (and translations into English), and have just passed the funding goal for printing (plus the first stretch goal).
Backing starts from as little as $1 for the ebook (or $20 plus international postage for a print copy).
@bookstodon The usual caveats apply to risk on Kickstarter projects of course - no guarantees that any project will succeed. However, this one is from an established indie publisher with a track record of delivering on multiple Kickstarters, so it seems reasonably solid.
Personally, I'd love to see it hit the $30k stretch goal to get some illustrations, that sounds very cool.
The publishers are on Mastodon too, which is always great to see: @atthisarts
My second SFS - we're just 5 days from the release of our new hopepunk antho Transform the World:
Income inequality is worse than it was in the Roaring Twenties. Corporations are moving fast and breaking things, and the social contract seems to be falling apart, aided by social media disruption and division on steroids.
We asked fourteen sci-fi writers to come up with innovative ways the world could work better.
“I could go on for ages about SF’s direct links to Woolf and modernism – the subjective and the impersonal, different levels of perspective, a single day in the life of a character and vast deserts of eternity”
With his latest novel, IN ASCENSION, longlisted for the #BookerPrize 2023, Martin MacInnes discusses the interconnectedness of life – & why arts & sciences belong together
@scotlit@bookstodon Never heard of MacInnes edited but reading this interview is wonderful. Having an idea how he approaches his work and what inspires him has made me interested in reading both In Ascension and also the other books he mentioned. I’m a lifelong sci-fi fan.
#introduction: Hi I’m Farah. I’m originally from a small South Asian country; now live in Iowa, USA. I talk about my hobbies, #books, #gaming, #sciencefiction and #StarTrek and other isssues like #mentalheaIth#science#psychology. Occasionally I’ll talk about #USpolitics. I complain about the world a lot. I am pathologically anxious and make jokes to compensate, they aren’t always funny. Trying to connect with people because it’s hard to make friends in real life. Peace! 🖖🏼
