You ever have an artistic blind-spot? A creative blackout? You look at a piece of work and you know you had a thought. You know there was an idea. You know there’s an attempt at something here, you just don't know what the hell it is. Yeah, that's this. I suppose there's always tomorrow.

Religion with its somewhat random rules 😂 🤣
"‘I nearly committed a terrible sin,’ said Brutha. ‘I nearly ate fruit on a fruitless day.’
‘That’s a terrible thing, a terrible thing,’ said Om. ‘Now cut the melon.’
‘But it is forbidden!’ said Brutha.
‘No it’s not,’ said Om. ‘Cut the melon.’But it was the eating of fruit that caused passion to invade the world,’ said Brutha.
‘All it caused was flatulence,’ said Om. ‘Cut the melon!’"

These lines made me wonder: how many people actually believe in God, and not the Institution, out of fear or just because it's what everyone does.
"… it can’t be just him who believes in me.
Really in me. Not in a pair of golden horns. Not in a great big building. Not in the dread of hot iron and knives. Not in paying your temple dues because everyone else does. Just in the fact that the Great God Om really exists."

@DavidBruchmann @bookstodon I think you made a very interesting point. Anyways, thanks for sharing your beliefs, I liked reading about it. Maybe you can consider writing about it if you are into writing. Maybe it may do some good to whoever reads it. I am not a writer, (so maybe wrong) but I think writing, just by itself, can also make the writer feel good.

The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser is literally the first Herzog film I ever saw (Every Man for Himself & God Against All was the subtitle (?) or alternate title for that film)

I've always thought it was a great title altho someone told me it's a German saying rather than something he just cooked up

"Real life is the present moment", Walpola Rahula says. Reality can be nothing other than the things that are now and here. As if that could make the present moment more pleasant. As if that could make the reality of it any easier to face.

The present moment is a morning come too early. Too fast. Too soon. Too little sleep and too much to do.

It's what I felt like when I was depressed long time ago. But you have to start seeing the positives in life, and take care of yourself. Sleep properly, eat good food and find things that are enjoyable.

Now that's exactly what I have always believed... My moral code in a nutshell, simple and to the point, with religion having nothing to do with it:
"What have I always believed?
That on the whole, and by and large, if a man lived properly, not according to what any priests said, but according to what seemed decent and honest inside, then it would, at the end, more or less, turn out all right."

I found that is a philosophically dense, emotionally evocative, thought provoking page turner. Now one of the things I loved about this book and of other that I have read, is the brilliant characterisation. Some of the themes explored in the book are the conflict of faith (or a lack thereof) and the question of morality and free will. I love this book! More on my bookwyrm linked.

@Narayoni @bookstodon yeah, it is a total page turner. I don't know why everyone calls dostoevsky books difficult, he's a great storyteller and it goes by very quickly

Narayoni,
@Narayoni@mastodon.social avatar

@julieofthespirits @bookstodon I guess different people different tastes 🤷. My first Dostoevsky was Crime and Punishment and right from the start I was hooked! When I had started I had expected to find it slow moving. I think he is great at writing realistic characters and I enjoy character driven books. Dostoevsky is one of my favourite writers now, especially after TBK which is my favourite out of C&P, Demons and TBK.

An astute judge of human nature ain't he?
"And it all meant this: that there are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal, kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.
Vorbis loved knowing that. A man who knew that, knew everything he needed to know about people."

I #read One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston. I don’t know what to say about this #book. It’s #romance. It’s F/F & trans-friendly. It’s a weird cross between mystery & ghostly & time travel & a NY subway. I absolutely had to know how it ended because the plot is definitely unexpected. I struggled a little with the style/voice, but a great diversion during a hard week. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️#reading #books @romancebooks

I read this. I remember the main character's mother looking for her long-lost gay brother, and various other bits. The science fiction elements were mushier than I'd have liked, but I liked it overall.

one thing I love about Dostoyevsky is how he creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension because of so many reversals and denials. what will Alyosha do? and Ivan? forget about them, Dmitri has taken a troika into the night!

My gripe with audiobooks on Spotify is that I'm already paying for premium, I refuse to spend more money on buying books when I'm already paying to subscribe.

At least with Audible you get a credit for a free book a month as part of your subscription.
