I'm reading a review of The Creator that goes on about the implications of Tyrell Corp's motto "more human than human" in Blade Runner, scoffs at the White Zombie relation, then never once notes it's a nod to Theodore Sturgeon. It's amazing how some people can be simultaneously famous yet totally unheard of.
Saw The Creator today in Dolby at AMC Theaters. Highly recommend. Thoroughly enjoyed it. 10/10 for me and in my top favorites of the year so far. If you love Rogue One, sci-fi and/or Gareth Edwards work, definitely go see it in the theaters on the big screen.
The movie reminds me of Terminator / Blade Runner / Rogue One / AI / Chappie / Dances With Wolves
It's near impossible to create a totally 100% original story that isn't like another film / franchise / book. Everything is influenced or inspired by, is referencing something, or is just similar by coincidence. I am not sure of all of Gareth Edwards inspirations for the movie but the blend of scifi that he served up was very much to my liking🤓

I realized there's a minor movie trope where characters misinterpret a typo or reference to something you the audience would recognize, but that misinformation is used as a lynchpin in the plot.
Examples: Zardoz, the Wizard of Oz. Kragle, Krazy glue.
What is this phenomenon called? And what are other examples?
Watched the movie THE VIKINGS (1958) starring Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine, and Janet Leigh.
Let's put it this way. THE VIKINGS did better with the knowledge about Vikings available in 1958 than THE NORTHMAN did with the knowledge available in 2022. In other words, I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I expected.
Pseudocide, or faking your own death, is a common trope in literature and film. Crime writer Manning Wolfe writes about why it continues to be resonant, from "Romeo and Juliet" and "Death on the Nile" to "Sleeping with the Enemy" and "Gone Girl."
This morning, I watched "His House" and I was immediately captivated by it. What a great movie! It's definitely my favorite of the season so far. It's got it all: a great and meaningful story, a freaky monster, charming characters, and excellent effects. This should be on every horror fan's radar!
Interesting story 👍
Not enough monster screentime (unless you count Johnny Depp) 👎
Still, I liked it okay. I watched it when I was younger and didn't like it at all (see my point about monster screentime). But this time I was able to see all of the German expressionist influence and was able to appreciate it. The visual design for this one is beautiful!
@bookstodon We just finished watching Scream 2. My verdict:
Pretty decent story 👍
One good killer, one dud 😐
I think this one is technically better than the first, but I think it lacked some charm that the first one nailed. (I miss Stu! 😢) This one had me jumping out of my skin, though! It's a fun thrill ride that no slasher fan should miss - just try not to compare it to its predecessor
Tonight, we had some edibles and watched "The Toxic Avenger". I don't know if I'd call it horror, exactly, but it's horror adjacent 😂 Anyway, my review:
Probably one of the best monsters 👍👍
The story isn't really important 😐
Wow! This one definitely punches in all directions. Still, there are some laughs to be had. And, of course, Toxie is a saint. Just watch with caution if it's on your radar
This afternoon, I re-re-rewatched Annihilation. My review for this one stands firm:
Excellent, thought-provoking plot 👍👍
Horrific monsters that leave an impression 👍👍
This is one of my favorite horror movies - as well as one of my favorite movies, period. If you're looking for a sci-fi horror movie that's both beautiful and terrifying, this is a must see. It'll stick with you a long time after!

Friday night is usually a movie night for me, but I had a hard time deciding what to watch. I finally settled on the 2018 Soderbergh psychological thriller, Unsane, starring Claire Foy. She was, not surprisingly, amazing as the involuntarily committed patient who brings her phobias in with her. It had some weird tonal shifts I didn't like but was still a good watch. If you have Kanopy / Hoopla, it's worth checking out I think. @movies#movies#films
