Good Doctor ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

I'm speaking here as an person, my score is 7 out of 10.

Also note:

  • I've heard a lot of good things about this.
  • This was released 10 years ago.

Those said and considered:

  1. The show is not about the autistic person, or for that matter. Autism was only used as a literary device to create a drama, like most other shows (be it Asian or Western) where there is an autistic character.

  2. There was an excessive emphasis on "dumb", "stupid", and "idiot". Instead of it making people emphatize, it makes an audience hateful.

  3. None of them actually showed that they finally understood autism and autistic people. To the very end, it was all about "do this" and "do that" so people will accept you and respect you. Sure, this is a common problem with society, however, should they have ended it that way? People will unconsciously think that's the proper way. It is not acceptance, it is forcing an autistic person to be "neurotypical".

And yet, 박시온 (Park Shi On) said in the last episode that it hurts him more when he's trying to remove his difference. But the people around him still acted the same way to end. There's a disconnect there.

  1. The female lead is a prime example of a lover who doesn't understand a single thing about autism and autistic persons. She never showed any sign that she's doing her best to understand him, nope, instead she's doing her best to make him a "normal" person.

Yes, that's how it is in the real world. I've been in such a relationship. However, why leave it that way? She want to do things her way to the end. She will eventually get tired and quit. They will have a lot of fights. 시온 (Shi On) will just keep doing the same thing, keep quiet, say it is okay, say he is not mad, because he is always the one doing the "understanding".

What they did was to only validate that this relationship is doomed to fail instead of showing how a relationship with an autistic person can be if done properly.

  1. The entire show, it was 박시온 who did the understanding and adjustments. Basically, the show taught us that autistic people should mask, mask, mask, and mask more. That no one will accept you unless you "get over" your autism (or in other words, mask your autism).

Conclusion:

  • While it did show the discrimination, stereotype, and prejudices against autistic people.
  • While it did capture the traits and quirks of an autistic person well.
  • I cannot recommend this show at all because it does more damage than in helping the autistic cause.

If I watched this when it was released in 2013, yes, I would say the same thing and rate it similarly. I'm sorry.

Just watch 이상한 변호사 우영우 (Extraordinary Attorney Woo).

A very good #quote from #굿닥터 #GoodDoctor.

I am still a little different from other people.
I speak and act a little differently.
So I tried very, very hard to eliminate the differences, but I couldn't do it.
The more I tried, the more it hurt.
So I thought I'd always be different until the day I die.

But many nice people filled in the gap for me.
And that is how I am standing before you today.
Thank you for filling in the gap.
Thank you for not avoiding me.
And thank you very, very much for your love.

The Creator (2023) ★★★★★★★★★★

This is an excellent film. For an American production, they weren't afraid to depict the "evilness" or extremism of the Western world. It's a nod to the sins of the West during the Colonial era, which unfortunately continues to this very day.

No one country, no one regional power, should be given this much might and sway for it will eventually make them dictators and tyrants disguised as democracy, freedom, and human rights. Exactly what is happening in our world today.

The ones who pay are not the 1% or the politicians or the high ranking military officials. It is the 99% who suffer. They justify their actions as "peace" and "for the future of humanity" when in reality, they only created more reasons for hatred and wars.

Sure, this was about AI. Yes, it is fiction. However, we cannot deny the underlying message of the film. Anyone who denies it is lying to themselves or living in their own fantasy.

Again, a superb film. It is rare to see productions from the West with such a profound message behind it. Western productions are often about entertainment these days, and making tons of money. Not this one. It's all about the message.

That I'm not sure. I only recalled reading how franchise stores basically have more freedom, and they have an option to choose their own source (for example chicken) as long as they use the same recipe and pass HQ's quality tests.

Since then, whenever the chicken is smaller, I assume it's a franchise store that decided to source independently. Because the ones that come directly from JFC are from big chickens.

I guess the best way is to ask.

Hmm… that gave me an idea, track and mark branches that are franchises and have small chickens. ^_^;;

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@evelyn @rom @heliosef

Yep, it is weird. There are strict guidelines for franchises. Sadly, I can't find it anymore. But, it makes sense as an explanation why some stores have small chicken (like last week, a certain store along Kalaw their chicken obviously came from a small breed; not the big breed Jollibee is known for); even though there isn't a reported chicken supply problem this year.

Or maybe, franchises have an option to order the big or small chicken breed from JFC? The small chicken breed is cheaper? But still, it's a question why JFC doesn't have the same breed of chicken across all stores in the Philippines, or even within NCR.

Like what I mentioned earlier, minsan na lang ako kumain sa labas, maliit na manok pa yung sa branch na 'yun.

If there is one thing that mystifies me with recent #movies and #TV productions is that for some unknown reason, the door openers always knew when to open the doors.

For example, I'm watching right now Underworld: Blood Wars, produced in 2016, and the doors were opened at the perfect moment by door guys inside.

You will see this in #Kdramas too, be it in period #dramas or present day.

Why did we invent automatic doors if human beings trained to open doors can do it anyway? More job, less electricity.

RookieNerd, to fediverse
@RookieNerd@hachyderm.io avatar

@fediverse Let's face it. When talking about the Fediverse, it is very hard to sell interoperability between different types of instances as a major advantage.

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@RookieNerd @fediverse

(and its forks) to mention a few, fits your description. ^_^

18+ youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@RookieNerd @fediverse

Not being able to sync'd has to do with the hosting and how the admin set up their instance configuration.

Depending on the software, there is usually a feature for “polling”. This is the part of the software where an admin can set how frequent the software will push and pull content and check profiles.

They also check how active an account is, be it local or otherwise, because believe it or not, polling an less or inactive account is also taxing on the server host.

These backend features or settings allows an instance to run. Imagine having 100 users who follow 100 users each. And the server is polling those 100 local users and the 100 users each.

Different fediverse software have done a different way to manage this. Some moved to other database instead of using mySQL. Some are using a different programming language instead of Ruby.

And a lot of other things we will never know about unless we look into their respective source codes.

I'm going to use the overused email analogy here, believe it or not, you don't actually receive every email sent to you. We're talking about legit emails here, they're just lost.

No technology can be perfect. Polling, sync'ing, there will always be something that will not reach you. However, developers and engineers are doing their best to minimise this (like in email land).

The way I see it, people were spoiled by silo or closed-network or closed-garden . Of course, within your own, it is easier to ensure everything is received. Like, again, in email, sending to the same domain there's a 100% guarantee it will be received. So, people expect it will be the same.

And if you explain the technical side of things, most people will run away and say, “just fix it” or “not ready for primetime”. But they never did that for the web (HTTP/S) and email (SMTP). When Chromium / Google Chrome was very buggy, everyone continued to migrate to it anyway. When developers were calling to kill IE6, corporations still use IE6 and were only forced when Microsoft seriously killed it.

Most people accept the flaws of software and services they recognise and already using but will not accept the flaws of the fediverse. I think that's what we should understand so we can change people's minds and have a better approach.

18+ youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@RookieNerd @fediverse

It's just the way it is. Different hosts, different host configurations, different fediverse software, different software configs, and all that.

Few people are aware today but when Google Mail was first beta tested (very early invite days), we did experience a lot of issues. Mails from Y!Mail not arriving. There was also one time when a mail from another server arrives garbled.

Apologies for using the email analogy again.

Let me use the mobile analogy as another example. Here in the Philippines, I don't know in other countries, we've had interoperability issues a decade or two ago. The Philippines is the SMS capital of the world, so imagine our frustration because the two major (and only) SMS providers cannot interoperate reliably.

Two different networks. Two different systems. Trying to federate to each other.

There will indeed be interoperability issues.

They haven't really solved it, but it was at least minimised.

So, yes, we have to accept that it is going to be a long road until we achieve the level wherein these challenges you have mentioned are minimised in the fediverse as well. I'm sure, politics aside, the developers are finding ways. ^_^

18+ youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@RookieNerd @fediverse

Do not recommend one software and/or one instance.

Using your scenario, would you recommend photography instances based on knowing Mastodon only allows up to 4 “attached” images? Not only that, Mastodon will only display 4 images even if there are more than that?

Or, are you going to recommend designed for images. Or, maybe , , , , which all allow more than 4 images and will display all the images even if it exceeds their software's attach limit?

Quite frankly, in my opinion, with the image display alone, Mastodon is highly not recommended. So, the number of users and instances Mastodon have does not make it the best software, as you have mentioned earlier, “Mastodon is the level of UX other projects should aim to”. It's not.

The best approach is we understand what the user needs and suggest to them the appropriate software and instances that will suit their needs.

Let's forget about the Fediverse for a while.

We have to remember that not everyone is on Twitter or Facebook. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals who only have an Instagram account. Why? They don't need Twitter and Facebook.

In Korea, for example, they have their own culture and platforms for communication Twitter/Facebook-like, so they don't need those. But many of them have Instagram accounts.

Now, let's go back to the Fediverse.

If those are the users we are reaching out to, then there should be no problem recommending Pixelfed. Because for these target market, their only concern and type of use is to share, well, photos or their latest digital artwork. They don't care about a Twitter/Facebook-like experience or use.

That brings us back to the features of . It is an “added benefit”.

  1. Users who want to follow this content creator can do so using their existing account.

Okay, you can't do this with , the last time I checked, however, you can do it with . That's a Lemmy limitation, not the fediverse.

  1. For the content creator who migrated to the fediverse, in particular, Pixelfed in our scenario, they have a greater reach because they're federated.

(Extra: You can actually turn Pixelfed into a regular Twitter-like software if you are using the web UI. Although, last time I heard it will be removed eventually.)

(Extra 2: BookWyrm also allows Twitter-like feeds and interaction, it's not restricted to just books.)

18+ youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@RookieNerd @fediverse

Hmm… There is a misconception on what the is and what is the goal, which unfortunately is what the press are telling people.

  1. The Fediverse is about bringing down the walls (silos / walled-garden).

  2. It never had the goal or objective or vision to replace Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Blogspot.

The Fediverse software available today are the materialised ideas of developers who believe in a federated SocialWeb, which by the way, is the original (not crypto). It goes all the way back to 2005 (probably earlier, I don't have my notes).

The goal was to get existing silos to open up and federate.

It just that, there are more developers who are excited about it, so we started to see serious projects related to the Fediverse. If I remember correctly, Misskey was not a Fediverse project when it first started. So, one would say Misskey was the first non-federation project that joined the fediverse network.

If these silos don't federate, it's fine too, because there are existing software and instances available.

And it has always been about choice.

If users want to stay with silo by all means. The fediverse is not here to replace them, the fediverse is here as an option and as a solution to the issues plaguing silo networks (like ads, privacy, content license, to mention a few).

That's what the fediverse is about and always have been to this day. It is never about replacing this and that, or recruiting people to switch over and encourage them to delete their silo SNS accounts. These other things were simply the passion and convictions of the users who migrated and some of the developers who developed fediverse software, it's not part of the fediverse itself.

It's just a protocol. Again, I'll use email here. If you have a server, you can choose to install your own email software. The protocol is there. Various email software are there. OR, you can just use Yandex or Gmail or Zoho and use the custom domain feature (or use their email hosting services).

If Twitter and Facebook implement the protocol, hooray! Mission accomplished. If they don't, that's fine either.

So, yeah, people are hating that Instagram will implement the protocol and join the network. They have valid reasons and it is understandable. However, the fediverse started to be a protocol to allow federation and bring back the as it was intended to be.

For us who were there in 2005 already, and when the first Fediverse software and instance came online in 2008, that is still our vision and goal, to bring down the walls of silo SNS.

When you're #Autistic you do look younger.

I voted earlier today. We have two, one for Barangay (Town) and one for Sanguniang Kabataan (SK or Youth Council).

The election rep handling the ballots asked for my ID because he had to confirm my age.

  • SK (Youth Council) is open for 15 to 30 years old voters.

I look like I'm in my late 20s.

While he did not ask me for my age, better to confirm it with an ID to avoid election fraud, when people ask me, I used to say, "I stopped counting at 30" (now it's 28). It's half-joke, the other half is the truth, people do mistake me to be in my late 20s.

Many #ActuallyAutistics, for some reason, look half their actual age once we enter adulthood. I'm not aware of any scientific explanation regarding this, but it has been observed.

For me, this was not the first time. I was always mistaken to be underage (under 18) until I hit 25-27. It was always funny whenever I was with friends or colleagues because they all reacted. 🤣

It was a 5–10-year gap. Now it's a 20+ year gap. Maybe one day, there will be a 30-year gap with my actual age.

How about you? What's your experience?

Timecop (1994)

Do I rate this based on the present (2023) or when I first saw this in 1994? I guess the latter, so it will be fair, an 8 out of 10. Many are raising and giving bad reviews about this show, but I think it is unfair. This was an early 1990s movie. Movies people are rating today will be just as a “bad” as they described 30 years from now.

That out of the way. It was nostalgic, re-watching this 29 years later. I was reminded of how people think of time travel back then, with not so much a worry about the grandfather paradox, and more about ripples in time.

We've come a long way, not just in movie making, storytelling, but also in how we perceive time and time travel. Yet, the ideas from the 20th Century is as valid today as it was before, only better and more mind-boggling.

If they reboot this, either as a new movie or a TV series, I wonder how it will be reinterpreted. Or maybe, one just have to watch the Korean TV sci-fi “Sisyphus: The Myth” to have a glimpse of what it can be. ^_~

Yep, it comes down to the era.

For me, a movie (or a song) is timeless if it resonates to the audience regardless of the era.

It might be because a certain social issue is still common in the latter eras (hopefully not because that means we haven't learned as human beings). Or the message or lesson is relevant regardless, say about life, relationships, family, neurodivergence, to mention a few.

If the work is based on a franchise, like the Marvel movies, the entertainment value would be king in this case. Although one can insert a message or lesson to make it even more than being simply for entertainment.

Lastly, and this one is not easy I think, if it makes a mark in history. Or there's a cult following. These are like Timecop, Back to the Future, and the TV series Fringe and the 12 Monkeys. There are also Battlestar Galactica, Highlander, StarGate, Babylon 5.

Though these were created decades ago, they left us wanting. They gave us a vision of what can, or could, be. To the point that, even though live-action production has improved leaps ahead, these are still worth watching again to get a glimpse of that era.

Even in anime, works like Evangelion, Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), Serial Experiments Lain, and the iconic Grave of the Fireflies, are some works that I think will be watched again and again in the next 500 years. Probably in some holodeck, where one can fully immerse (like in Star Trek).

LOL. I remembered (Grade 9 and 10) some of my exams wherein I failed because my solutions were weird. I did arrive at the correct answers, but getting there was what's graded more. (And my teacher then understood the way I think, so she showed me why I was wrong by testing my way against other rules. I really appreciated she explained it.)

I don't like maths, but ended up being chosen as class maths teacher substitute in Grade 6. Our maths teacher saw something, I guess how I understand the logic behind it, even though I can't do mental calculations. (Don't even ask me about my multiplication table for 6, 7, 8, and 9. Hahahah.)

@masukomi It's similar, memorize the big grid. But I can only do 1-5 and 10.

I calculate 6, 7, 8, 9 by using my hands (I learned to visualise it mentally).

Here's a video I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Nr-f02AUY

I can't get my head with the multiplication table for 6 to 9, but after someone taught me the hand way, it worked.

@MishaVanMollusq Usually depicted in some shows/films, where the autistic character prefers their food to be even and/or in prime, otherwise, they'll throw a fit or won't eat.

IRL, I've heard it said years back that people who love Primes, and if combined with Even numbers, are "more likely autistic". I guess it also stems from the stereotype that autistics are savant.

“Dungeons & Dragons introduces its first canonically autistic character”

‘Designer Makenzie De Armas discusses putting a little bit of herself into the game’

is “a princess turned paladine”.

‘De Armas herself is autistic, and was able to incorporate a lot of her own experiences into the character.’

In the local of the , we can easily express which order in the siblings we are, but it has always been a challenge to express this in English.

Examples (Filipino - English):

“Ako ay ikatlo sa mga magkakapatid.”

EN: “I am third of the siblings” vs “I am third of four siblings.”

The problem with the latter translation is “of four” was not stated in the . The first option is the closest but it sounds weird.

How about this: “Ako ay pangalawa sa mga babae at pang-apat sa mga magkakapatid.”

Literal translation: “I am second of the female siblings and fourth of siblings.”

Maybe a better one is: “I am second female and fourth among us siblings.”

How is it in your local language? And how would you express it in English?

@gunchleoc Thank you very much! I wasn't aware there was a study about it. Very interesting! I've always wondered how it is in different cultures and languages. ^_^
