every time I post a screenshot of my terminal I get these exactly two reactions:

  • "omg what is this font tell me the name :blobcat_hearteyes:"
  • "you don't really use that font, right? this is a sillypost, right? right??"

(I really do use that font and I love it. no this isn't a joke.)

I have been looking around and found a few new Distros which I plan to test and perhaps use. These are all Arch based.

Exodia (dwm, bspwm) Arch Distro:

CachyOS (gnome, kde) Arch Distro:

You probably weren't aware, but your crypt(5) supports the following hashing functions (in addition to some others):

  • bcrypt ($2b$)
  • scrypt ($7$)
  • yescrypt ($y$)

You should definitely migrate to one of those password hashing functions over the risky sha256crypt / sha512crypt which is default on most distros.

I had already taken a superficial look at macOS, a year ago, but now, I spent 30 days with it, as my main OS, on an M1 MacBook Pro.

And boy am I glad this is over, and glad to be back on !

Here are my conclusions about the hardware, the software, and the general experience of using a Mac as a Linux user:

Why do #linux communities feel so unwelcoming? I feel like you get discriminated for using a certain distro.

Open your , , or /Windows terminal and type:
python --version

It should be between 3.8 to 3.11. Anything else is just a disaster waiting to happen. There is no need to use an older version as Python no longer gets security updates.

Even though I absolutely love , sometimes I get tired of encountering the same issues over and over again, and of the "it's 99% there" situation.

Let me know if you agree with these issues or not, and if you have others that personally bother you.

(Also, 2nd video out of 4 that isn't edited by me, previous feedback has been incorporated partially, let me know what you thought!)

How do you keep track of your software updates and latest releases?

I am not talking about your OS, but mostly hosted web applications on linux (docker and non-docker). For docker I know there is watchtower but I am not searching for automation.

Subscribing to RSS feeds, mailing lists, bookmarking some git repositories, following some projects on mastodon, using mail notification on updates if possible... is there any better approach?
