This week I've been mainly reading, no. 118.

Sheila Barker's Artemisia Gentileschi (2022) (part of a new series on ) is a well presented synthesis of current scholarship, without getting bogged down in the detail of disagreements about attribution(s). While there are more comprehensive books on Gentileschii, as a nuanced introduction to a major artist's career & achievement (leavened with biographical detail) this will be hard to beat.

I'm trying to commission an illustrator who will turn somebody's PhD (on the subject of history solidarity / peace / anti-nuclear warfare in the 1980s) into a comic book strip / big cartoon-y poster. Not sure sure where to go looking - any ideas?

This week(end) I've been mostly reading, no. 100.

Adelina Modesti's handsomely presented biography of Bolognese artist Elisabetta Sirani (2023), continues the reappraisal of from a feminist angle. Focussing on the works of & the social environment of C17th (which offered considerable support to ), Modesti's interesting (if occasionally a little dry) book will be of great interest to anyone seeking read an art history populated by women!

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 96.

If you're interested in the politics of public subsidy of the , then Lambert Zuidervaart's, Art in Public (2011), will be a good investment. While at times pretty dense, its a forensic discussion of the justification for subsidy, why it encounters political problems & the wider role of the arts in society. Its full of interesting insights & will offer & arts administrators some helpful prompts for thinking about their work

Learning to smile in photos. Wide teeth smile is still a way from here but I suppose little smiles are progress?

Also I just made this necklace and it's available on my Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/GenderlessBySkaly

Just saw that has had three articles about how they mistreat their sellers in as many days. As an independent myself, I've been struggling to find purchase (and purchasers) on the platform, which is why I started building - a Etsy-alternative. These articles just go to show how much we need a new space that helps rather than uses them. Please this to help us spread the word.

BBC article headline titled "Etsy U-turn in row over withholding seller's money". Posted 19 hours ago when the screenshot was taken (August third, 2023).

Greg Rutkwoski requested to have his art removed from Stable Diffusion. Once it was, the image generation community created their own tool trained on his artwork that the company can’t do anything about. AI “artists” have no respect for real artists.

I wonder why we even call them artists? I mean, because I use a word processing program - even expertly - to create text, that doesn’t make me a writer. Same as that not everyone who takes photos with their phone…or with a giant DSLR, is a photographer.

The majority of so-called AI I’ve seen online are indistinguishable from proficient AI app users. And we don’t give other app users the benefit of the doubt either.

I wonder if the whole thing will finally convince artists that modern regime was never meant to protect them.

It was meant to protect the middlemen. The Amazons, the Spotifies, the Sonys, the Disneys. The film studios, the publishing houses.

Now the middlemen figured out they own basically all of art, and that they can just train a computer on that, to replace artists with a piece of software.

And then stop paying artists even the pittance they were being paid so far.

I hope this becomes a wake-up call to all , to all creative people out there — a wake-up call not just about and automatically generated content, but also, and more importantly, about how urgently we need solid reform.

We had been needing it for decades, in fact.

is not supposed to be hoarded by Disneys or Sonys, not supposed to be locked in corporate vaults. Art is more than just means of "maximizaing shareholder value".

cannot be replaced by some software. But it will take corporate execs a few years to learn it the hard way.

Meanwhile, artists will be hurting, bad. They will need our support — they always did!

So support them directly, if you can. Boost their toots on here, buy their merch, donate to them via whatever means they accept, or just send in a good word.
