I’ve recently begun going through a bit of a personal renaissance regarding my gender, and I realized my numbers-focused brain needs something to quantify gender identity, both for myself and so I can better understand others. I also just don’t like socially-constructed labels, at least for myself....
And I’d suggest that you should probably add another axis to represent genders that don’t fit the man/woman binary. Not every non binary person sits on that man/woman spectrum
Open source developer and Linux enthusiast here. Although cluttered, Android’s home directory is fairly simple to understand
The nightmare begins when you take a look at the root filesystem.
One time I was trying to port an OS to my phone and I had to figure out the Android init system. Went to source.android.com and what. the. fuck. Just as a side-by-side comparison:
There are so many wrong things about it like why are there 11, 12 places to put programs (/system/bin, /bin, /usr/bin /system/usr/bin, /sbin, /system/usr/share/bin…)
Why the fuck drivers are scattered around folders instead of just /lib/modules
Why is the home directory /storage/emulated/0/ instead of just /home/0/ (also why the user is named “0”)
Where the fuck is everything???
God (Linus Torvalds) forgive me but even Windows is better than that shit
T-Mobile was “paying” for a rarely-used account on my family plan. Parents used it in another state. I occasionally used it. My brother logged in once in awhile. On any given week, it might see like 4 hours of collective viewership.
Turns out TMobile’s contribution only covered the first $8. I have been paying another $10/mo. out of my own pocket and wasn’t batting an eye.
Netflix was getting $18 a month for doing almost nothing! And that could have continued for many more years without my even questioning it.
BUT… One day I couldn’t sign onto my own Netflix account that I pay for. Evidently, I’m not in my own household? That led to my discovery of the gargantuan amount I was paying for a service I barely use anymore.
So now, thanks to their greed, Netflix gets $0 from me. And not a single family member has phoned to ask why Netflix no longer works.

Some people seem to really enjoy the articles posted by the content bot, but others seem to think that the bot post too many articles and clog up their RSS feeds. Come give us your opinion in the straw poll.
I think it also depends on the rate of bot posts, when they post many posts within the same minute it’s just a wall of posts with little value, for example there’s 100 posts so each post will at most get 0-2 comments.
If the bot instead adds a single post once a hour/day depending on how active the channel is it could be fine. Because then people have time to discuss each post.

So I’m reassessing my entertainment center since seeing the Video Game History Foundation’s report. Since the study it’s got me thinking, if you could pick any 4 consoles to have hooked up to your TV (4 becuase I’ve got 4 inputs to my TV) which would you pick and why? I will accept modded consoles as answers too.
Yeah it was a headache for me in the past too, but the latest Steam Big Picture which behaves more like a Steamdeck has made it pretty easy. Since it launches right away, I can easily launch and quit steam games with 0 issue and when I’m done I used big picture to just shut the PC down.
One issue I found was if I let the PC sleep, it always brings up the login screen on wake so I just shut it down everytime. NVME’s are so fast the boot up is whatevs. Non-steam games are also a little painful as sometimes it won’t switch active windows, or I have to login or something.
I only use this machine for games. Like you said, HTPC was a pain. I have a different server that I have Plex setup on and I use Apple TV’s / Roku’s for streaming.
I’m trying several apps, connect, jerboa, liftoff and voyager and for some reason the only one that shows comments is jerboa, the other 3 show 0 comments. I can’t login into lemmy.world so i can’t post on any of the mentioned apps but in Voyager. What can i say? Help!
I mean, the other thing that’s kind of stupid is - lets say a companies stock once issued goes to 0 and is delisted. So what? That’s not the company going bankrupt. The stock market valuation has no direct application to a company once the shares are issued and bought the first time. But ignoring shareholder demands that would destroy the company wouldn’t likely tank the stock of a otherwise good company - because there’s someone out there who just wants value to hold and preferably dividends vs infinite growth (that doesn’t exist). Now, you could buy enough stock to throw out the CEO and whatever, but that’s likely to be expensive and a PITA. So while there’s going to be some high profile examples, A) that gets close to taking a company private anyway, and doing a shitty job and B) generally limited numbers of companies will have people going to these lengths.
I think the bigger issue isn’t wanting companies to be profitable - that’s kind of the point of companies. The issue is shareholders trying to make capital gains on everything. This isn’t possible long term because infinite growth isn’t possible. I would argue what people and decent investors should want is the steady dividends and not worry about if the stock is up or down.
True true! It used to be easy to find styles that resonated, and now I just have to dig a bit deeper.
On the topic of manufacturers, I also read that boxy styles can be a cost-cutting technique. Because it’s easier than tailoring/tucking or making other adjustments when the human form isn’t a simple rectangle.
Size 0 models, too…it’s not just about cultural norms or fat shaming, it’s also laziness. It’s more work to tailor a garment to a curvy figure than a waifish one. (Plus, there’s the simplicity of only having to supply one size.) Which isn’t hating on anyone who happens to be a size 0 or a boxy shape to begin with! :)
Appealing to authority is useful. We all do it every day. And like I said, all it should do is make you question whether you’ve really thought about it enough.
Every single thing you’re saying has no bearing on how AI will turn out. None.
If a 0 is “we figured it out” and 1 is “we go extinct”, here is what all possible histories look like in terms of “how things that could have made us go extinct actually turned out”:
1
01
001
0001
00001
000001
0000001
00000001
etc.
You are looking at 00000000 and assuming there can’t be a 1 next, because of how many zeroes there have been. Every extinction event will be preceded by a bunch of not extinction events.
But again, it is strange that you can label an appeal to authority, but not realize how much worse an “appeal to the past” is.
For me it was Jeff Kinney. I was meeting a different author I love, but there wasn’t enough room downstairs and we had to go up. Turns out that’s exactly where Jeff Kinney works! He’s the author who got me into reading so I thought that was so cool
Years ago I went to the Philly ComicCon with some friends. On the first day we’re walking in and I see this huge shadow come up behind me and then over top of me and then I see the tallest person I’ve ever seen walking directly in front of me. Turns out it was Peter Mayhew. He literally walked over my small 5’0" self. It was surreal.
Asking about why the kernel needs to support secure boot on an individual system where I am not concerned about the hole punched by the nvidia kernel module. I’m concerned about the proprietary boot loader firmware that will never be maintained well. I’m not asking if it is a good idea in general or for most people....
I’m not sure I properly understand your problem, but perhabs your kernel is compiled with CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_FORCE. You can check with grep CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_FORCE /boot/config-$(uname -r). If it isn’t you could try and run the kernel with module.sig_enforce=0 as a parameter and see if that helps.
If you don’t need secure boot, then just disable it (if possible).
It was so weird when I was playing last night. Went through 3 battles with 0 drops and then like 7 or 8 dropped all at once on the next one. And hitting random barrels sometimes yielded 2 or 3.
I thought maybe doing an event might get more drops but no, not really. It just got me killed. :P I did better just roaming the countryside. By the end, I began wondering if the drop rate depended on the type of monster? I felt like I was doing better with spawning types like shamans and worse with ghosts? But who knows? I guess if it’s a bug, it’s all moot at this point.
Uhm… software and content creation? Exclude ads, fine. But I’d like to get paid for my work and that you won’t get your hands on my work until you pay me. If read the words “donate” or “honour system” in your reply I’m going to lose my shit.
And again, I’m not talking about paying for the platform, but for some content. Some content costs money to make, and people work for the money they put in and may naturally want returns. Why is that a bad thing? Why is people getting paid for their work a bad thing?
I’ll tell you what’s bad: people being dependant upon major platforms because it’s the only place to make money. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy giving way to much power and influence to the big corporations. Why wouldn’t you want to decentralise that?0
Do you remember the GameStop stuff that happened with the bond traders and Reddit?
There are lot of parts interested in taking down Reddit. And same thing will not stop at the fediverse.
I just hope fediverse is harder to control. If an instance grow so much like Lemmy world we could end up on a similar boat right?
There is a big difference between users that consider Reddit/Lemmy as a work place and users that consider it as a forum (expecting 0 money from the app. Just helping others or getting help from others).
So, unless they can reduce the harm they cause to 0%, any and all attempts to reduce it are futile and pointless? This is the nirvana fallacy, and I hope you understand how horrible that would be if we lived by that rule. For example, I can’t stop all racism, all human exploitation, all sexism because I live in a capitalistic hellscape built on the suffering of others. Therefore, I don’t actually need to try, correct?
Oh those notifications! I totally forgot about them!
I use an Apple Watch for some years now (got a cheap series 0, and later a cheap series 4 which I still use)
This helped me a lot! I get the notifications, it vibrates, I take a quick look and, most of the time, just delete it because it is unnecessary. It got so annoying that I uninstalled apps and removed notifications for others lol
I have started doing something completely different than using bookmarks. I set up yacy on a personal, internal server at my home, which I can access from all my devices, since they are always on my wireguard vpn.
Yacy is actually a distributed search engine, but I run in ‘Robinson mode’ as a private peer, to keep it isolated, as I just want a personal search of only sites I have indexed.
Anytime I come across something of interest, I index it with yacy, using a a depth of 0 (since I only want to index that one page, not the whole site). This way, I can just go to my search site, and search for something, and anything related that I’ve indexed before pops up. I found this works way better than trying to manage bookmarks with descriptions and tags.
Also, yacy will keep a cache of the content which is great if the site ever goes offline or changes.
If I need to browse, I can go use yacy’s admin tools to see all the urls I have indexed.
I have been using this for several months and I am using this way more than I ever used my bookmarks.
Teachers will be forced to tell parents that their child is questioning their gender even if the young person objects under new guidance for schools in England, the equalities minister has indicated.
Even if it’s a school’s therapist, those resources are limited in scope, and assessment of need would be carried out.
So you think school therapists aren’t good enough? Yet you think the teachers know more about how it will affect the student? Which is it, are the schools competent or not?
I think you and I both know that’s not the same, nor carries the same weight as potentially being abused and kicked out of your home due to being ousted as LGBT+.
0 difference. Cops can’t arrests my spouse because they assume that she might one day abuse me.
If there is a reasonable suspicion that disclosing that information could lead to abuse, and not disclosing it wouldn’t, I’d much rather those “government employees” err on the side of not waiting until they’ve introduced a child into an abusive situation before doing something about it.
Instead of encouraging lying to parents, why not try to improve abuse and homeless programs? Why don’t you advertise them in school? Giant posters “do you think you’re being abuse? Talk to a school counselor to get information on resources”
Boom. This is fucking easy dude. You just want excuses for government employees to override the parenting of parents, without any evidence besides a teachers subjective observations and rash conclusions.
What I don’t want is a law that creates a situation where the above is true, and makes the situation worse.
What if it makes it better? A kid that’s questioning gender have much higher suicide rates, what if the teacher withholds this information, and the kid commits suicide. That’s on the teacher, is that what you want? Parents have that responsibility, not teachers. You want teachers to have the say, without any of the repercussions.
Their ability is foster the people of the future, and that includes safeguarding them from harm, including that introduced by the child’s parents.
Once again, that’s not their duty. Their duty is educate the children how the people in the state and district desire.
You have this impression that government agents should be the ones determining the culture of the future. Paired with the government forcing us to give them our children for 8 hours a day 5 days a week or else they take our children from us.That’s inherently dangerous and anti-liberal.

Neuverschuldung wurde also effektiv günstiger
