Pons_Aelius,

Modern colonial resource extraction at its finest.

Why spend all that money training medical staff when you can ship in ones from poorer countries who you can also pay less than the locally produced ones?

And then when these countries worsen, causing inhabitants to migrate you can yell “stop the boats”

Also the WHO has shown a direct correlation between a countries healthcare and the size of families. So if you want to stop these countries from exploding their population, invest in their healthcare.

This could be such an epic win-win in a few years. We setup schools there and train staff. And for every 3 we train, we can open up one visum for one of the staff (volunteer to go). The country try gets a good school and subsidized trained professionals, and the west gets access to trained professionals.

But yeah, poaching them is cheaper. Plus it avoids all the nasty sideffects of actually helping these countries.

WhatAmLemmy,

Aid is for virtue signalling and giving money to your corporate overlords. Not for helping these countries or people.

I’m happy that my worldview is not as grim as yours, but I get where you come from.
