[SOLVED] What is this big concrete block? (It’s for storm water)

I see these things at construction sites pretty often and have no idea what they are for.

It’s about 5 feet tall, 2 feet wide, 2 feet deep, 3-inch wall thickness and hollow. Big circular indents on each side. They’re usually empty, sometimes with random litter inside.

What is its purpose?

SpeedLimit55,

Thanks for the update, I saw this earlier today and was wondering.

Them’s is ominous minimonoliths. They’re ominous. Listen closely and there’s an intense humming noise that conjures images of the vague concept of mortality.

slinkyninja,

It is a crime that you got downvoted for this truth.

Fair, but, like, do down votes actually matter on lemmy? Or, y’know, anywhere else for that matter? I’m not really bothered. I brought joy to a few people who thought it was funny. Lol.

dustagon,

It’s a junction box for stormwater pipes. ELI5: Pipes are straight runs. Junction boxes are structures that allow for changes in direction or elevation of the pipe runs. The pipes get plugged into the holes and everything gets buried.

Diocese3049,

Do they cut out the concrete where the pipe goes?

No, they use a portal gun in those spots to get the correct flow directions.

Pyr_Pressure,

It probably pretty thin and easy to cut, makes it more universal since you can use it for any change instead of having to make specific ones for 90° turns or for T-junctions.

FlihpFlorp,

You have learned the korvax word for “concrete”

Maybe a distribution pit? …com.au/…/300x300-distribution-pit/

The holes aren’t always pre-cut because it depends on the construction / building which ones will be used, and it is easier to cut holes into those blocks as needed instead of sealing off holes that are already present.
