I’ve been a little under the weather, so had a three day break instead of a two day break in between runs. Ran my fastest 5km in a few years as a result. Still a minute or so off my pre-covid record but felt pretty good during the run. Slight tightness in my right calf though towards the end. Time to get the roller out.

LastYearsPumpkin, in Kelvin Kiptum breaks a world record in his U.S. marathon debut

Within spitting distance of 2 hours. Would be interesting to see if it’s broken in the next couple of years.

golli,

Everything points towards it imo. Kiptum is only 23 and it wasnt planned as a sub 2 run with good pacers and all. And it didnt seem like a crazy fluke either.

If it weren’t for the Olympic games in Paris I might have said that it would be likely to even happen next year. But with them being in July/August there might not be the right timing for a good attempt.

hamsammy, in General chat - how's your running going?

Just started the other day, and my legs hurt 🫠 my right knee has been acting up so I’m not sure what the best stretches are to warm it up. It mostly twinges when I stand up after squatting or bending over so that’s neat. Happy 36th birthday to me 😅

Pretty well. I’ve been increasing distance and time after some tendonitis and everything seems to be going ok.

I’m not very interested in racing much more than myself so atm I’m working on getting up to 10 km’s. Yesterday I did my longest in both time and distance with 1:20 9 km. Not prize winning but significant for me, that’s on hilly sandy trails as well so I feel I’m probably pretty close to my goal.

Still having difficulty building up speed but I’m happy with my progress and don’t want to push too hard all at once and end up on time out again.

Six weeks ago I finished my couch-to-10k training, and ran my first 10k after a gap of 3.5 years. It went well, but the fatigue lasted for two weeks. Afterwards, I fell sick and couldn't start running for two more weeks. Finally last week, I started training again, for a faster 10k. And I realised that running couple of times a week actually makes me feel more rested and full of energy, as compared to a more sedentary life.

marvinfreeman,

This is a real achievement. Congratulations!

isn’t it such a bummer how right all those self righteous arseholes telling us to get off our arses to feel less tired were?

I was a couch potato (well active but not athletic) till 30s and the benefits are frustrating large. Still mad about it.

ggwithgg, in General chat - how's your running going?

Taking a break because I am feeling my knee on the outside, and I do not want to get a runners knee. I was thinking of two weeks but not sure. Anyone experience with this? When should I be okay again to run?

calhoon2005, in What smartwatch do you run with?
@calhoon2005@aussie.zone avatar

Garmin 245 music. It’s a great watch for my purposes, running, hikes, steps, basic health stats etc. The sleep tracking seems to pick up my in bed reading so not very accurate. The one I’m wearing is a refurbished replacement that Garmin provided (free of charge except postage after a bit of back and forth) on account of the development of the dreaded white spot - Garmin forum link about it. So apart from that issue, it’s a great watch.

ohlaph, in How to Plan a Recovery Week?

Drop your mileage and intensity until you recover.

Do 25-40 percent.

echo64, in How to Plan a Recovery Week?

Sounds like you picked up a cold, flu or covid more than anything

nonresonant,

I can see how it might look like that, but I’m pretty isolated with a child in cancer treatment. I have been in an extremely stressful environment for the last 5 years straight with no vacation, no downtime, and a child being diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago. Lol, stress is finally telling me body I need to fix that. Same according to my physician.

m750, in why am I so bad at running?

Totally not judging. I was a new runner once too. Running is very specific activity, were the majority of improvements come simply from just running more. However, running more is a very slow process, you can’t go from 0 miles, to 10 miles, and expect them to be fast. While you are fit, you aren’t running fit, it’s like being fit and not being lift heavy fit. Your plan is a get to the finish plan, which is good for ramping and getting to the finish line, but isn’t really going to build speed, but that will come if you continue to work at it. Don’t get discouraged, the improvement when you start are often the the biggest jumps you have. Good luck

nonresonant,

Thanks for all the support. I’m going to finish this plan running in zone 2, like I have be sticking to the last 4 weeks. Once I can run 13.1 miles nonstop, I’ll find a new plan that helps build speed. I am on week 13, so next weekend is my first 10 mile run. Last week’s 9 miles was already the longest I’ve ever ran. It’s interesting because I’ve been adding a fartlek on the first run of the week, and when I do I can tell I’m on the verge of straining my left calf (always my left). So, I keep my Fatlek tame, too, and aim for 1 minute at an 8:30-9:30 mile pace, and then 1 min recovery jog, anywhere from 15-20 times which gets me anywhere from 4-5 miles. I’ll make sure I dont do anything more than that this plan.

golli, in How often do you get new running shoes?

I usually run my shoes for around 1100km usually a bit more. The shoes I took the furthest was a pair of saucony triumph 18 that I took to just over 1600km. But they were past their usefulness at the end.

It really depends on the shoe. For me I start to notice slightly more impact (most in my knees) when the midsole starts to go dead. Not to the degree that it hurts or I get any injuries though. After that the shoes typically still look fine, but kind of lost their advantage as a running shoe.

echo64, in How often do you get new running shoes?

Some random amount of time past 700km. Garmin tells me that it’s time to replace the shoes, but it’ll be a while before I remember, and I find a sale…

Venutianxspring, in What earbuds do you run with?

I ran with Jaybird Vista, but started using some shocks open air run after being chased by some dogs that I didn’t hear and almost getting ran over on a night run. The shocks don’t sound as nice, but it’s nice to be able to hear everything around while you’re running.

Venutianxspring, in Not My First Choice For Race Day? :)

You get all of your slowness out through the bar, so all you have left is speed for the race

Venutianxspring,

Or slow digestion for those ultras
