If they actually continue on their path of ensuring no ad blockers work on YouTube, I will simply cease watching it completely. I really hate how aggressive advertisement became over the years. I didn’t mind non-gore (because some ads shown really gruesome health issues) and non-porn side panels which didn’t animate. Hell, sometimes I’d click if they had what would interest me. There is absolute zero chance I will buy anything which bothers me. And I won’t let it waste the time of my life.
I like the game grumps and Lex Fridman. The documentaries are cool, but I have to watch them in a different container or YouTube will start feeding me 30 minute ads or rants that sound reasonable but are super bigoted and flawed when you actually think about it
Reddit meant more to me than anything else I do online, and I committed to leaving it behind even before I found Lemmy… YouTube is barely worth it even without the ads. And I’ve got a whole fediverse of video content to investigate
I’ve had Premium since it was called Red (got it through Google Music) and never see ads. Would be upset if I was OP, but haven’t experienced that issue myself.
Do you happen to know of a replacement for Youtube Vanced? It stopped getting supported due to cease and desist, and now it only works like half the time… (idk why youtube doesn’t create a version check and make it not work all the time, but w/e lmao I’ll take what I can get)
I’m also a premium YT subscriber and if I see this or they kick me off for using PiHole, I’ll cancel my account and just set up some automation with YT-DLP to Plex or Infuse for channels I like watching. If youtube decided that it’s their turn to get shitty like the rest of the popular internet, I’ll be beyond upset.
You can actually set up firewall settings to block any traffic coming from the ads, the only way they can stop that form of ad block is to block the person’s IP address.
I’m mainly worried that some of the people I like watching on youtube will decide that youtube isn’t worth it anymore and they’ll stop making content entirely. Or even switch over to twitch, which I’ve never been able to get into.
Careful, lots of people take issue with paying for a service these days. /s but only kinda
YT premium has been by far the most worth it subscription for me. I spend a frankly unhealthy amount of YT, even have it running in the background while not watching actively, and I listen to YT music for hours every day. Really easy value sell for me.
But somehow people expect YT to host and deliver literal exabytes of data for free.
These kind of unsolicited reports from users prove a really important point, and one that Spez and company would prefer to ignore. If you have good enough content people will pay for an ad-free experience.
reddit and youtube really shouting out how much companies don’t give two farts about its users. there’s so much wholesome and educational content on youtube but, dogs forbid, youtube make $5 fewer in revenue than yesterday 🙄 i can’t wait for grassroots decentralization of the internet, including video
I have chronic migraine. It can be very difficult for people to understand that not all of my migraines are severe because they have a family member/friend that has them and every time they have to be in a dark room, no noise, etc. A lot of my migraines are moderate and I can mostly function but it is miserable. I have gotten pretty good at saying not today.
