JustineSmithies, in [Question] How can I dim screen after 20s inactivity when running on battery? tlp/sway/arch/chromebook
@JustineSmithies@lemmy.world avatar

You could use swayidle and add a line to use either light or brightnessctl to dim and restore the brightness. Or just as I do turn off display after a certain time. This link should give you an idea. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Sway#Idle

rkk,
@rkk@lemmy.world avatar

Brightnessctl is installed and works just need a way to read whether is on ac or battery.

eshep,

@JustineSmithies @rkk Should be able to read it from /sys/devices/ or with upower.

Laser, in KDE Wayland for Gaming

I’ve heard that recently VSync can be disabled

You can set an option for the compositor ("Reduce latency by allowing screen tearing artifacts in fullscreen windows"), however as far as I know, standard wine including staging has no real Wayland support right now. Everything up to this point is just laying the groundwork and there's no switch or anything to enable the functionality AFAIK. The merge request that enables tearing for xwayland was just merged last week.

anyone_yun, in KDE Wayland for Gaming

I play exclusively on kde wayland and I am really happy with it, I don’t have to mess with anything and everything works. The only thing that comes to mind is that Steam isn’t wayland native so you have to set an environment variable to set scaling on hidpi screens. Other than that everything works really fine!

SecurityPro,
@SecurityPro@lemmy.ml avatar

How do you set that environment variable for Steam?

anyone_yun,

I set STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=2.0 in /etc/environment

SecurityPro,
@SecurityPro@lemmy.ml avatar

Is that within a Steam configuration file?

anyone_yun,

No, it’s a file in your computer, located at /etc/environment, you need to edit it and add the env variable I posted earlier

SecurityPro,
@SecurityPro@lemmy.ml avatar

Great, thanks! I’ll give it a try

anyone_yun,

You’re welcome!

warmaster, in Linux for the Airheaded Layman?

Try Crystal Linux, it's based on Arch and it's beautiful installer will do the heavy lifting for you and leave you with a fully working Arch Linux installation.

dodgypast,

How's the community for that?

I use Endeavor which is what I was going to suggest as an easy to install Arch based distro.

For anyone wanting to learn then going for something Arch based means you've got the Arch wiki to back you up.

warmaster,

They have a Discord server and solve your issues almost instantly. Plus, as you say, the Arch WiKi is freaking awesome.

warmaster,

It's a vibrant community, they have a Discord server, whenever I need help with something, my issue is solved almost instantly. Plus, yes... the Arch Wiki which has no match. And the distro comes with a pacman and AUR helper that makes it stupid easy to work with.

Ninguem, in I was looking for scrcpy on debian...
@Ninguem@lemmy.pt avatar

Thank you all. That’s what I thought - no way to make the query the way I was thinking of.

I realize that, if i’d like to have a program search for repos not configured in sources.list, then I would have to specify the repo as well (the https:// link, I mean).

The website half-fixes the problem, since it tells me the release the package might be in. But still doesn’t tell me whether it is in main, contrib or non-free (section?).

Don’t worry about me creating a frankendebian by mixing releases - I destroy my system in other more subtle ways like adding appimage applications as if there was no tomorrow.

JohnJeffreyJones, in I was looking for scrcpy on debian...

www.debian.org/distrib/packages could be a place you may find it. But apt-file did not find it from my sources list, so I hope you will be luckier.

wmassingham, in I was looking for scrcpy on debian...

No. If you want only one package from contrib, you can add the repo, pin it below your others, then pin scrcpy from contrib above the others. That should do what you want.

There’s also Lapce which will hopefully implement Helix’s editing model too: github.com/lapce/lapce/issues/281

Ninguem, in How can I get better at the CLI?
@Ninguem@lemmy.pt avatar

Someone already mentioned The art of command-line. It’s a start.

And just use it… you’ll get better at it with time and practice.

Also, make sure your use of the CLI enhances your workflow, or it won’t work.

@Fisch@lemmy.ml avatar

Do you need a touchscreen for handwritten notes? My laptop can do that and I have the pen for it too and it works really well. I could give you the details of what laptop it is and what software I use if that’s something you need.

I got myself a hp 450 Ryzen 5 5500u. Being a patient gamer, it runs everything i want it to buttery smooth, it was a windows pc, and i installed endeavour os onto it. Just check if Linux drivers exist, and you should be fine. Arch wiki should help

@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

I get it, it would rather see development time spent in having desktop icons (disabled by default) and always visible dash like macOS.

Other more important features would be a system-wide way to control the border radius of everything and frankly some kind of decent font rendering that didn't include a blur of 100px around every letter.

Fixed in version 5.3

warg, in Is there a way to add Favorites/Shortcut directory paths for GUI file browsers?

With the file dialog open, browse to the directory you want to pin, right-click it and select “Add to Bookmarks”.
