What is the preferred way to make a bootable USB drive on Linux these days? I want to try a couple of distros on my very old mother’s PC before installing. When I googled it, I only found ways to do it in Windows. Perhaps my Google-fu is off? So I thought: why not ask Lemmy?
for example if i replaced a text file in a game with a symlink to a modified version of that text file somewhere else on the machine, would the game still be able to read the file?

How can I set up a desktop on my DietPi machine that’s always up, then remotely access it on my main Windows machine? I’m very Linux illiterate and everything I touch breaks, so I’d like to slowly learn with a desktop in a way that kinda makes sense
I have it installed on HDD, on a Lenovo Ideapad 3 gaming laptop, with a nvidia GTX 1650 Ti. I have windows installed, but it’s on SSD, so it probably doesn’t affect....
As the title states whenever I try to login and start the desktop environment (xfce4 and dwm) I get kicked back to the login screen with no error message. Beforehand I was messing around with configuring dwm. I’ve tried updating through the tty and deleting dwmblocks (which is what I was messing with before all this)...
I have a couple bash scripts that I’ve written and been using but some need a rename, and once I came across an online list of shell scripts that you could compare against to make sure your name isn’t already “taken” by something that someone could have installed to minimize the chance of conflicts with scripts/aliases....

If I pipe in something to most that’s wider than my terminal width, it’ll page it sideways but only single character at a time with an arrow key. I want most to behave like less, which will scroll sideways with an arrow key almost a full page (60 columns I believe), which most will do also if I use Tab/Ctrl-B or “>” and...
Why is the default value 176? I initially thought it might have to do with not allowing anything particularly impactful but the 8th bit (0x80) is set which allows to shut down. Why not just allow everything listed here?
