@TheConversationUS@histodons This is a tricky one for me because simply having a judge grant a restraining order isn't the same thing as being convicted of a crime, however people needing to get a restraining order don't really have any other options available to them. In my opinion based on watching the court the past few years, the majority will side with the GOP party line and knock down the law, then come up with some crazy tenuous reason why.
Jonas Salk, the virologist who developed one of the first polio vaccines, famously said it would not be right for anyone to patent it, asking: "Could you patent the sun?" Salon took a look at his life and work, and spoke to his son, Dr. Peter Salk of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Public Health, about the lessons we can learn from him.
@CultureDesk@histodons This does not at all make sense; the vaccine man would be well aware that anti-vaxxing imbeciles have been around since we figured out small pox, let alone polio.
It just so happens that about 8% of the public is genetically predisposed to being against vaccines, and 1% of it is willing to make a comfortable middle class lifestyle from selling lifestyle to that 8.

@histodons
Long shot. I’m not a historian of pedagogy, but I’m trying to trace the idea of children being predisposed/inclined (natural abilities) towards certain subjects. For instance, Latin, some thinkers say there’s no point forcing children disinclined towards Latin to spend a lot of time on Latin, but instead let them focus on what they’re inclined towards. What is the history of this idea in pedagogy? When and where does it appear first?
I've only read a little Rousseau many years ago, should be interesting to pick him up again. Looking briefly at the scholarship on the person who wrote one of the sources that spurred this for me, seems people doubt any Lockean influence, but no word so far on Rousseau. Will be interesting to delve into this
This week: what did lions mean to the ancient world, and why did so many rulers hunt them? Let’s take a look at the lion hunt as depicted in ancient art.
The book "Malleus Maleficarum" was a bestseller during the 15th-17th centuries. It provided guidance to #witch hunters, resulting in the execution of thousands of people, mostly women.
@TheConversationUS@histodons
The “Malleus” was written circa 1486 by two Dominican friars, Johann Sprenger and Heinrich Kraemer, who present their guide in three parts.
Once again, religion is responsible for dark times for humanity
@bojacobs@histodons My father saw two atomic bomb tests, one while he was in the navy in the early '50s, the other from Hawaii in the early '60s.
He was part of a group of sailors from Camp LeJeune trucked cross-country to Nevada, stood in ranks, the bomb exploded miles away in front of them and they were trucked back to NC.
The test in the '60s was on a faraway Pacific island, and visible only as a flash across the evening sky. I believe it was the one that produced the first EMP event.
