I'm sure you are familiar with this situation: you're shopping on a Saturday, and your shopping list is written on the back of an old paper copy of a once read article. My list today is on the back of Clyve Jones‘ „The Protestant Wind of 1688“. Fun fact: this copy was made around 2005 in Berlin, and moved with me through my career from Berlin to Erfurt to Nuremberg to Augsburg. I am living my best life, dear #histodons@histodons
#OnThisDay in #history - Germaine de Staël died in 1817 at age 51. A native of #France Germaine was the daughter of Jacques Necker. A budding intellectual from an early age, Germaine sat in on salons run by her mother and refused to marry someone who wasn't intellectually stimulating to her.
As an adult, she ran her own salons and published political treatises (seen as proton-feminist) and novels (which caused Napoleon to exile her from Paris). #histodons#OTD@histodons#writer#author
CBI Image of the Day. It is 1984 & the Apple MacIntosh quickly stood out for its relative, small form factor, GUI, and ease of use--garnering substantial adoption in businesses, like this NYC office, schools, and homes.
The cityscape and office setting stand in contrast to the computer lib myth (more than a little irony to revolution myths presented in ultra-expensive Superbowl ads)
"HOW THE HINDU RIGHT-WING IN INDIA IS UNDERMINING MUSLIM IDENTITY THROUGH HERITAGE" by Maitri Dore.
"In service of the myth of a Hindu golden age, the Hindu right-wing is contorting historical facts and attempting to cleanse the built environment of Muslim heritage. Their meddlesomeness is proof of the pudding that heritage is more than simply brick and mortar. It is about the selection and use of these for political purposes. In this scheme then, architecture–by way of claims to mosques, and public space–through its renaming, are merely convenient props that hold up the cherry-picked narrative."

Heute vor 90 Jahren wurde das "Gesetz zur Verhütung erbkranken Nachwuchses" verabschiedet. We live in humongously exciting times, and digital is exponentially propelling the output from ancient manuscripts. ML driven prediction (suggestion) for lacunae is of particular interest to me, but I trust the text above to be very revealing. Can't wait
On this day in 1850, Robert Ramsay died aged 56. See this and other gravestone inscriptions from Derry Cathedral, Co. Londonderry, in the Journals: https://bit.ly/rams1850
This delicate piece depicts Phoebe seeking to reassure Latona and Niobe; meanwhile Niobe’s daughters Hilearia and Agle play knucklebones, unaware of their imminent death…
This piece was painted on marble and each figure provided with a name in ancient Greek. It is also signed by the artist who lists themselves as Alexander of Athens.
Image slightly enhanced to bring out the contrast.
