Exactly one year ago today, I unboxed the first copies of Naming Gotham. I got to spend a year sharing on podcasts, giving public lectures, & doing news interviews with PBS, Daily News, Hellgate (+ so many more). What an adventure! Thank you all for the support.

P.S. Books make great presents! @histodons

Excellent response in this essay, by Sephora Bemba, to the NYT's recent & repeated profiling only/or primarily male AI "pioneers."

What America spent money on during the Cold War instead of actual security in the daily lives of its citizens ():

"Throughout the world, our strategic focus stand guard over our way of life. But, if a general war engulfed the world, all our military power could be helpless.

Unless our leaders could survive and control our forces before and during the holocaust, an aggressor could strike without fear of reprisal.

Only the belief that we could control our forces throughout the entire spectrum of a general nuclear war would deter him from striking the first blow."

1969 US Air Force film, declassified thanks to the National Security Archive.

Back in March 2020, I remember telling people that this must have been what it felt like when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.

Roman mirror of the goddess Diana ~ C2nd CE

Diana sits in divine nudity with her cloak offering respite from the rock ledge she sits on. She sits before a garlanded altar with a small herm, her quiver nearby.

The AHA’s letter expressing strong objection to Ohio Senate Bill 83 is on the agenda at today’s meeting of the Ohio House Higher Education Committee. Our testimony expresses grave doubts about the utility of the bill’s heavy-handed interventions in both history education and university administration. In June 1948, Sen. Arthur Vandenberg (R-MI) famously stated that "politics stops at the water's edge," urging R cooperation with the Truman administration's foreign policy objectives. Stalin's proxies had just eliminated all non-communist members of the coalition governments of Soviet-occupied Central Europe and the Berlin Blockade loomed.

Today's Republican Party by contrast is worth over 10 fresh divisions to the russian invasion force. Shame.

Did you know that before they were making razors,
@PhilipsNorelco
made intercom systems? Neither did we! The image of the day shows the Norelco S1 (left and the Norelco S2 (right), ca. 1960s.
