bus_go_fast, in Cities Skylines 2 developer Colossal Order on bike support

I have not been excited for CS2. I’ll wait in a couple years. I’m sticking to CS1 now. Now that they added trolleybuses only roads, and new models, that’s all I care about.

Olgratin_Magmatoe, in Car Enthusiasts Should Hate Car Dependency. Here’s Why - Hello Road [21:42]

Fantastic video. And potentially even a decent introductory video for people deep in conspiracies over 15 minute cities like my parents.

talab, in The Big Dig Podcast - Interesting look at how cars can affect communities

There’s five episodes out so far, but another four are planned.

Aidinthel, in Why Pedestrians Never Die In This New Jersey City

So, the answer is basically “Because the city government decided they didn’t want pedestrians to die, and acted accordingly.”

bstix,

Yes it’s really that simple.

When Oslo and Helsinki achieved the same thing, it didn’t start with people asking for visible crossings or bicycle lanes. It started with people voting in a government that promised to get rid of pedestrian deaths. The actual plans and design followed.

People might dismiss and argue for or against specific solutions, but I think we can all agree that pedestrian deaths are bad, so it shouldn’t be difficult to get started, regardless of who is running the government.

The problem I’ve experienced in the US is that the local governments will voice support for this goal, claim they are pursuing it, but then just not implement really easy and basic solutions because of their fear of backlash.

Abucketofpuppies, in and no this is not an invitation for oil addicts to rant about EVs

Depends on the climate. Sure doesn’t affect global warming though.

What about a cab? We’re car-free and that’s what we did when my wife went into labour. I mean, if you’re having an asthma attack, you probably shouldn’t be driving anyway.

Harder to do on mobile otherwise I’d likely have done it myself.

mulcahey, in [meme] What would cities be like today if we had never demolished our streetcar networks?

I saw a stat going around a couple years ago that back at the streetcar peak, you could travel from like NYC to Madison,WI entirely by street car (I’m paraphrasing; can’t remember the exact cities.) Does anyone know the stat I’m talking about? Would love to find the source

  • ClockworkOtter, in cycling in Italian cities

Interesting. We went to rural Tuscany recently and it was only the first group.

I get the feeling that Italy is very heterogenous culturally, despite appearances. It did only become a single country relatively recently in the history of Western Europe.

    fra_beone,

We were unified in 1861, which is before other Countries in WE, but the problem is more related to the fact that our economic boom in the 50’s brought a car colture that still exists right now: for the first time ever people could afford to move easily, and the infrastructure was built upon that car-centric idea. Tracking back is hard and colture is hard to change.

galaxies_collide, in How the heck did we get here? Most best selling "cars" are now superzied pickups and SUVs.

Those blue headlights you hate are cheap aftermarket lights, not the stock lights that come in cars.

    Dr_Wu,

No I hate the stock ones too

Cars stop scaling at tens of millions in a single city and actually make transit worse. Its stupid to rely on them in the first place.

Not_a_cactus_fan, in [discussion] Bus commuters of Lemmy, do you use bars or handles?

I don’t like to use the handles. They are so high up that it get’s uncomfortable and when I pull down to stabilize, my Fingers usually get squished. Most of the times when I use the handles, blood starts to leave my arm. Maybe the handles in my buses just really suck but I always use the bars or anything else to stabilize.

    Rentlar,

Have you checked that the handles on your buses aren’t disguised vampires?

we came willingly and funded it out of our own pockets
