Divinitous, in Dungeon Keeper - To this day still an amazing game!

Ahhh, I remember this game. And now the need is there to find it again.

Pretty sure I got it off GoG for real cheap. Lemmy have a look.

Edit: It’s there, gold edition.

And Dungeon Keeper 2!

Both are £4.89 each

Oh god this. Either my PC couldn’t run it very well, or the demo just sucked because I didn’t think the concept worked in 3D. Killed off the franchise really.

Another 3D transition was the Another World series. First there was Another World, then in the same style of graphics, Flashback and then the sequel in full 3D, Fade to Black which had awful controls and ran very slowly for me. I’m sure my machine matched the specs at the time.

DosDude,

I loved fade to black. It was hard as shit, and I sucked at it. I think I just liked the graphics and fluid esso of the animations.

vettnerk, in Lemmings 3D - the forgotten Lemmings game

There was this weird trend for a while that perfectly good 2d games were redesigned for 3d, as if that automatically made it better. Worms did the same. And like most other games that did the same, the franchise died shortly after.

The only games I can think of that successfully pulled off this transition was Duke Nukem and GTA.

DosDude,

Mario and metroid maybe. There’s probably more.

funnystuff97,

Depending on who you ask and how old they were at the time, some people would say they liked Sonic’s jump to 3D with Sonic Adventure.

(We don’t acknowledge 3D Blast. Or Jam.)

DosDude,

Oh yeah. For some people sonic did it good.

Oh! Command & conquer. Although the gameplay remained mostly the same. But if the game needs to play differently, command & conquer: renegade, even though it wasn’t as popular, but the gameplay is awesome.

silverdk,

Oh damn thanks for reminding me of that game!

Gork,

Crusader No Remorse/Regret

Tomb Raider 1

Both had great gameplay but the control schemes are extremely difficult to use today.

spongebue,

Legend of Zelda absolutely pulled it off

roflo1, in Supaplex - a boulderdash-like puzzle game

Great memories.

Apparently Rocks & Diamonds has a Supaplex level collection: www.artsoft.org/rocksndiamonds/levels/

Might give it a try…

DosDude,

Amazing! I’ll check it out! Seems to be for the re-release on modern systems?

roflo1,

Yes.

Rocks and Diamonds is being actively developed for modern computers.

I haven’t tried installing level packs though.

Classic. Somehow, I never managed to play NFS during the DOS era (probably because none of my friends had a copy I could “borrow”), Test Drive however was more my jam.

My first NFS was NFS III on Windows, got hooked on to it and continued playing it all the way till Most Wanted (2005). Overall, I’d say NFS: Porsche (2000) was my favorite in the whole series.

DosDude,

NFS III is amazing. I got it working on my pentium 200 MHz win 98 machine with a voodoo 1. Still extremely fun!

I used to love Midwinter. First-person role-playing set in a future nuclear winter. 16 colour 3D graphics on an 8086 blew my mind. Was really excited to play it in VGA when my dad bought a 486, but it was too fast to be playable :'(

DosDude,

Looks amazing! Finally a reason to use the turbo button on the 486 though!

ccunix,

I think my dad may have bought the only 486 on the market that did not have the fabled “turbo” button. It was a source of annoyance for sure.

Davel23,

I used to play Midwinter on my Atari ST. In the manual it tells you that you'll need to travel around the game area and recruit various characters and vehicles, and that you'd never make it by just heading straight for the enemy base. I played the game so many times like that and never made any progress. So eventually I just said screw it and headed straight for the enemy base. And wouldn't you know it, I won.

CooperHawkes, in Star Trek: Judgment Rites - A Star Trek point and click adventure with the original actors' voices

Wasn’t this the game William Shatner was recording when he had the infamous “sabotage” disagreement with the director?

DosDude,

I think so, yes.
