HorseFD, in Sigil 2 - Romero's unofficial 6th DooM episode is out for the 30th anniversary for doom

It actually doesn’t run in the original Doom engine. It’s a “limit removing” WAD, meaning it doesn’t use any additional features but removes static limits: doomwiki.org/wiki/Static_limits

DosDude,

So it is, thank you! I assumed (wrongly) since it runs on PrBoom it was vanilla compatible.

The arrival of CD-ROM meant it was mandatory for all games to have FMV if they needed to or not. It was the new law. 😆

I loved it, the more the CDs, the better. I remember being jealous of friends before I got my first CDROM because they could play the talkie versions of the classic LucasArts games.

DosDude,

I remember phantasmagoria having like 6 CDs or something. Our family borrowed it from someone. I was in awe of the eternally folding jewel case. It was the best game ever. Never played it since then, and I’m afraid to. It has been on my wishlist on GoG but I’ve been afraid to add it to the collection because of potential disappointment.

I generally leave most games in my memories where I remember them affectionately. Trying them again now often tarnishes that. 😆

If a game has had a new upgrade, I’ll give it a go. I enjoyed playing Dungeon Keeper again via KeeperFX and I’m currently playing through Doom 3 via Dehwm.

DosDude,

I get that. Though most games I know what I get. The rough edge makes a great experience because the times are different. So it’s more like a time capsule. See what classified as acceptable when I was young.

Though in the case of phantasmagoria, because we borrowed it for like a week, I haven’t been giving enough time to actually make a coherent memory of it, so the small flashes I remember are all I have. And I afraid the game doesn’t hold up to the hype I gave myself over the years.

Most games I played a lot, I can still enjoy. And games I’ve never played are a cool time capsule. Though that game is in a kind of limbo to me.

Dungeon keeper is awesome though! Enjoy! Also Doom 3 still holds up, but was overshadowed by Half Life during its release, and the departure from the Doom formula made it the bastard child of the series.

I’ve noticed. Doom 3 really is a horror survival, especially with the original torch mechanic which enhances the scares but is also a little annoying.

What’s really annoying the most is all the secret compartments from which the enemies appear. It’s becoming tiresome, especially as I can’t understand why anyone would build a base with so many hidden areas! 😆

DosDude,

That’s one thing held over from the original. Monster closets. Not the best design choice.

Oh cool! Never heard of this. Thanks!

and we have a community! !stauf_mansion

I would cross post this back, except the soundtrack for T7G VR was JUST released so that post is on top right now (also LGR is a bit negative about this game lol)

DosDude,

Yeah. You’re the reason I got my headset. Thank you for bringing the 7th Guest VR to my attention! I got a rift S headset 2nd hand for cheap, and it works like a charm!

Zaphod, in Studio working on the Dark Forces [1995] remaster says the game has been 'difficult to change' because LucasArts created its own version of multi-threading years before it became popular

Yooo Dark Forces is getting a remaster?! One the first games I ever played at like 5 years old lol

TauZero, in help

Try out the jetpack list on tvtropes in the “video games” tab: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JetPack

For example Dangerous Dave (1988) fits your description: video timestamp at 8m35s

TauZero, in MegaRace 2 - A full FMV racing game with ridiculously hilarious and campy cutscenes

The graphics looked incredible for its time, it was miles ahead of any other racing game. I just now realized the tracks are actually FMV! The camera doesn’t follow the car but the middle of the track, and splits at any fork. Neat trick! This way most everything is pre-rendered, with all the lighting and dynamic shadows and the like. Only the cars and obstacles are rendered in realtime, on top of the video. Cool how they managed to integrate it all together seamlessly!

DosDude,

It blew my mind once I figured out it was FMV. The Tibet level stuck in my mind as peak game graphics for at least 5 years before I figured it out.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!

So stoked about this!

DosDude,

Me too! Download will take a while though.

I can’t wait for the boxed version.

yildo, in Caesar II - A city building strategy game

Big fan of Caesar II. I like it better than III or IV. III doubled down on the walker mechanic with its unsatisfying meta of avoiding intersections. The roadblock solution to the weird meta didn't show up until the later Pharaoh and Zeus games

Caesar II is elegant and has graphics that have aged very well

PlEbS aRe NeEdEd!!!

Will forever be seared into my mind. Kid me did not understand how to play this game.

skozzii, in Caesar II - A city building strategy game

I figured it out and it was glorious. Caesar 3 was even better.

DosDude,

Welp. Time to install Caesar III then.

DosDude, in Dominus - ADG Episode 264 (overcomplicated DOS game I failed to play as a kid)

I’ve never heard of this. It looks beautiful though! Love the ability to zoom in on the map, so you can see the cool art! Might have to check this out.

Fun fact: Bullfrog were in such a crunch to implement Hi-Octane they didn’t have time to implement different car stats. Every vehicle handles exactly the same.

I’d forgotten bout this game!!! Nice!!!
