Unless we're talking within the context of Social Disability Theory, I cannot accept that being an autistic is any more a disability than being an allistic is a disability. And the 2020 lockdowns showed that allistic burnout also is a thing.

@Frances_Larina @actuallyautistic allistic burnout has nothing to do with autistic burnout. They are vastly, but VASTLY different in what’s happening both physiologically and psychologically. They’re caused by totally different things.

One might even say they are very nearly opposites, which makes it difficult for each to recognize when the other is experiencing their version of it. That's why I brought up the (to them) extreme isolation some allistics encountered for an extended time (perhaps two weeks or so if they were quarantined) in 2020. My very allistic, very social, high stimulous sibling was nearly raving like someone who'd been forgotten in a sensory deprivation chamber for weeks despite hours of zoom & phone calls each day + a full work schedule + deliveries and visitors to her window.

I wouldn’t call that burnout. It looks like suffering from lack of stimulation, which I can relate to, to an extent, being AuADHD. I didn’t experience this during lockdowns, because my overall anxiety levels were so high. The things I was allowed to do & the nature of my home meant that I was able to incorporate sufficient stimulation into my day. (Lots of natural light, an exercise machine, spacious living room, courtyard, nice neighbourhood for daily walks to a pretty park, jigsaws, baking etc) But for some much more social people, (and undiagnosed ADHDers), with small apartments etc, that was horribly challenging.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I refuse to accept the disability label.

An F1 race car 🏎️ is very sensitive , requires a lot of specialised care and works best on specific tracks, but nobody calls them “disabled tractors” 🚜.

@avuko @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Yeah, but when a F1 car blows its engine, it's gonna be helluva lot more expensive and harder to fix than your Fordson's :blobcatcoffee:

@avuko @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Gave a snarky reply at first but deleted it. I think that analogy is incomplete. What if the F1 cars had to race on potato fields? They'd break down all the time. The farmers would be annoyed, why the heck can't you plow the field? My old Fordson can do it, surely a million dollar fancy car can. Get the f out of my field, you useless car. You try to find a track to run on with other F1 cars like you, but you find they are very rare and hard to get to. It's mostly potato fields and tractors. And when you finally break down, again, the farmers are like why can't you fix yourself? Tractors never break down, but even if they do, we just fix them and they're good to go. Absolutely useless, you are.

So I think if all there were was potato fields, the F1 cars might feel a bit disabled there...

It is okay to disagree. And I don’t think we disagree. ;)

@avuko @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic they would be called F1 race cars trapped in mud

wruffian,
@wruffian@bark.lgbt avatar

@avuko @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic however, given that i'm trapped in mud, and not able to do what i need to do, i am disabled, but that disability does not come from within me, it comes from the environment i'm in trapping me in torturous conditions

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic No joke! 🫠

Burnout also greatly amplify the less fun aspects of being autistic. In my case, higher sensitivities, worse executive functioning and social anxiety.

Slowly surfacing from deep burnout lately has reminded me how much joy I can find in things. Still a ways to go, but maybe I'll beat this negative feedback loop yet.
