Born 99 years ago today, Shirley Chisholm knew she wasn’t going to win when she ran for president 48 years later in 1972. America wasn’t ready for her. But she was going to get it ready! The fiery former teacher wanted to redefine the realm of the possible and give a voice to those who were traditionally marginalized in the political process.

Yesterday Elon Musk told advertisers to go fuck themselves and threatened to send his mob after them if they pull their ads from Twitter/X.

Over the years, he built a reality where he was a genius who could never be wrong. But as his fantasy collides with the real world, Musk is melting down — and has the power to make us all feel the pain as he crashes back to Earth.

WOW. This is about as close as one can get to saying “I reject Benjamin Netanyahu and his government” without saying it.

Good. Netanyahu is grimly opposed to a two-state solution, and also opposed to Biden/US Dems.
Hopefully this critique is just the beginning from Dem leaders.

GhostOnTheHalfShell,
@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai avatar

@protecttruth

The two state solution was always a failed idea. The idea that Jews could find sanctuary only by carving out a homeland claiming territory simply embraces the idea that ethnic safety can only be won with a blood and soil nation. It embraces 19th century notions of scientific racism, which have almost entirely disappeared after WWII.

If people believe it, the Irish, Germans, Italians etc should repatriate and start fighting over historical borders in Europe. Have at it.

I am really getting angry at my fellow Americans. We KNOW the role that Fox is playing in leading to the erasure of this democracy, and other than a few gestures from Media Matters and a few others, we are doing nothing about it. You want to save this country? Burn that faux news network to the ground. Make everyone working there fear that they will never work again if they don’t just walk out now. Enough is enough. In 1381, King Richard II said these words to the defeated leaders of the Peasants’ Revolt:

“You wretches detestable on land and sea: you who seek equality with lords are unworthy to live. Give this message to your colleagues: slaves you were, and slaves you are still; you will remain in bondage, not as before, but incomparably harsher. For as long as we live we will strive to suppress you, and your misery will be an example in the eyes of posterity.”

I appreciate it when elites are honest and straightforward about their intent, their contempt, and the system of privilege they fight to preserve.

Also note he states they will HARM the economy to do so.

Their intent is not to function in a system that “optimizes prosperity” and all the other BS pillars of capitalism that have been demonstrated as false.

Whatever they claim as a benefit of markets and free exchange, is largely wrong, and the destroy markets, and destroy free exchange.

When they say capitalism is the best system. Shout back !

I have to wonder how congregants drifted that way. If they came to the idea from what their pastors said, it’s quite the indictment of the latter. If it’s from social media, it’s an indictment of the community (some might think this sentiment is harsh, but it’s reality), but the megaphone of contempt is well funded. They started with greed is good and then made vilification (false witness) a business model. We’re all living in that world.

It is a movement to join up with. everyone. especially in the face of a rising tide of billionaires moving to seize control of the nation (project 2025). They are now speaking publicly that all billionaire organizations will work in unison to take control of the US if a republican gains the WH. Expect they will move state wise as well.

60 years ago this week, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, delivered “I Had a Dream” at a seminal event in American history. Years before Black Americans had been thinking and strategizing.

Today in Labor History August 28, 1921: The Soviet Red Army dissolved the stateless Anarchist Free Territory, after driving the Black Army out of Ukraine. The anarchist rebel leader, Nester Makhno, barely escaped, and with serious injuries.

The Free Territory within Ukraine, also known as Makhnovia (after Nestor Makhno), lasted from 1918 to 1921. It was a stateless, anarchist society that was defended by Makhno’s Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army (AKA the Black Army). Roughly 7 million people lived in the area. The peasants who lived there refused to pay rent to the landowners and seized the estates and livestock of the church, state and private landowners, setting up local committees to manage them and share them among the various villages and communes of the Free State.

Michael Moorcock’s “A Nomad of the Time Streams” is a steampunk/alternative history novel where Makhno survives into the 1940s.

The hidden history of the USSR and IIRC China is their destruction of worker controlled resources, replacing them with party controlled communes, farms and factories. The popular idea today of socialism are authoritarian societies which is an oxymoron.

When there’s an autocrat or a hierarchy telling people now to organize, it’s authoritarianism. In this sense, rather than left v right, the proper eternal confrontation is authoritarianism v socialism.

Microfilm degrading? Yikes! :-(

"From the 1950s through the early 1990s, most film was cellulose acetate-based and known as "safety film," because it replaced the highly unstable and flammable nitrate film widely used before it.

But in the years since, libraries, archives and collectors have discovered "safety film" actually poses a huge threat to film-based archives and collections because it eventually breaks down. "

In 1943, U.S. forces in Britain expected to export racial segregation. When white American Military Police (MPs) insisted a local pub segregate, the owner said he would. When MPs returned next day, they were met with “Blacks Only” signs & British barmaids telling white soldiers to wait their turn when they thiught they would be served before black soldiers. This set the stage for the epic Battle of Bamber Bridge.

"Barely one year after we learned that the Penn Museum had the remains of two children murdered in the 1985 MOVE bombing, the University of Pennsylvania tried to quickly and quietly bury the remains of over a dozen other Black Philadelphians whose bones they had kept in the basement of the Penn Museum for decades.
