The gom jabbar was held to Paul’s neck, though, and I imagine the same would be true for Thor.
You were thinking of the pain box, perhaps. The pain box is the test, the gom jabbar is the concentrated poison weapon that enforced participation in the test.
Hi, can you help me with a math problem kbin? It's algebra, and it's been a long time since I've had to do it. Can you explain to me how simplifying the terms comes out to 9/2 in the pictured equation please?
Hey, I can take a swing at this. It’s basically just a question of understanding how fractions work (which is fumbled horrendously by teachers, at least where I’m from - I basically had to teach myself fractions all over again when I went back to school).
So, if you look at the terms on the left hand side, we have “x”, which is the same as saying “1x”, so the whole number “1”, we have a whole number “3” as part of “3x”, and we have the fraction that’s going to cause us to do a little work, “1/2” as part of “1/2x”.
Now, a whole number can be rewritten as a fraction, and this makes the most sense when you see fractions as little division problems unto themselves. For instance, the “1/2” could be read as “1 divided by 2”, or “0.5”. A whole number like “1”, then, could be rewritten as “1/1”, or “2/2”, or “3/3”, and so on.
Now, in order to add fractions together (which is what we’re trying to do since our ultimate goal is to get the variable that we’re solving for alone on one side of the equation), we need the denominator to be the same for all of our terms, i.e. the “common denominator”. Because we already know the denominator we likely need, the “2” in “1/2”, we simply need to transform both of our whole numbers into fractions with 2 in the denominator.
For “1”, this can be rewritten as “2/2”. Dividing 2 by 2 gets us back to 1, so that works out.
For “3”, we need to determine what number divided by 2 gets us to 3. In this case, that’s 6, which leaves us with “6/2”.
The equation now looks like this: 2/2x + 6/2x + 1/2x = 45
We can, of course, pull the “x” out like this: x(2/2 + 6/2 + 1/2) = 45
Then, when adding fractions, we only add the numerators (the reason we were looking for the common denominator in the first place). So, 2 + 6 + 1 = 9, leaving us with “9/2x = 45”. It’s then just a question, as you can see in the posted solution, of multiplying both sides by the reciprocal to solve for x.
@nyarlathotep thank you so much! There's other comments to read below, but this is the first one that has triggered my memory for common denominators. You've explained it brilliantly!
Edit: can you explain how the reciprocal works and comes out to 2/9? Been a long time since high school
So I created a magazine (which is similar to a subreddit, correct?) - what now? How do I even find my own? They don't show anywhere in my profile nor do I see any moderator tools, etc.
@acunasdaddy you can find magazines by searching from https://kbin.social/magazines. The Articles posted to the magazines you subscribe to show up in your feed. Microblogs are just aggregate content from the Fediverse. The moderation tools are limited, but what exists can be found by clicking the Magazine Panel button.
All of Kbin is very much a work in progress. A lot of things work as expected. Some don't. Be patient and pay it forward by helping others figure this out when you can.
I'm not familiar with Kbin much but just had a look at your profile from a not-logged-in person's pov. In the right hand sidebar are some stats about you including one that just says "moderated" with a 3 next to it. The 3 is a clickable link that seems to take me to a list of your created magazines.
Not sure if there's a simpler way to get to it when you're actually logged into Kbin though.
@DeadwingSoda Weird, if I open kbin.social in Safari, I have the back button, but if I share the site to my home screen, when I launch from the icon, there’s no bottom buttons. 🤔
In your feed next to thread titles, you can click the domain there (smaller text in parenthesis), where the website/instance will display content posted to it just like a "magazine" allowing you to block it there. Also similar to the magazine URL, it's https://kbin.social/d/name.extension.
Note that for instances, it won't actually block threads from a blocked instance unless the content is hosted on that instance. And that can be a bit silly, like cross-instance posting not being blocked due to using their host instance for an image.
I have an assignment for my Geosciences class where I have to ask others, preferably those not from the United States, why the US struggles to believe in Science, particularly topics such as The Big Bang Theory.
Why do Americans, compared to most of the world, seemingly propagate Creation myths while simultaneously rejecting the very notion of Science?
How does your community (or country) regard The Big Bang? Is it largely accepted in your culture(s)?
Finally, what could the American education system or government do to help its citizens increase their Scientific literacy?
Thank you for any responses, it is greatly appreciated!
Longer Answer: Christianity is arguably the major religion in the United States and there is a small(ish) segment of Christianity, primarily composed of Baptists, Pentacostals, and other Evangelicals, who believe that the story in the Bible which talks about the 6 days of creation (see Genesis Chapters 1-2) means 6 literal days. How they came to this belief is a much longer answer which would require a more in depth understanding of the history of Christianity in the United States. “Young Earth Creationism” is also a rather new idea and was basically unheard of prior to the early 20th century.
This is not a mainstream view and it is not held by any Christian traditions outside of those listed above. For instance, I’m Presbyterian and the idea of “young earth creationism” is ludicrous to us. The theory of evolution is generally accepted by most Christians although we generally don’t discuss it much because it’s science, not theology and doesn’t really haveuch of a place church. Ironically, I was raised as a Baptist and was taught “young earth creationism” growing up so I am quite familiar with it even though I don’t believe in it. But again, the theory of evolution is a commonly accepted, mainstream view in the United States.
As far as what the American Education system could do to increase science literacy, that’s a difficult question to answer. The education system here is very diverse and the quality and resources can vary dramatically depending on where you’re located.
The Stumbleupon devs were pioneers of what's happening to social media now.
We're not making money. Should we add advertising? Nope Should we require a subscription fee? Nope.
The problem is all these people using CSS to curate their finds on the web. This is NOT a blog (even though there was a button that said 'stumbleblog it').
Ohhh noooo, this is about the stumble button and nothing else (the button I no longer used much because other people's content was a faster way to find cool shit).
Now, we're going to wipe all of your work out and make this about THE BUTTON.
Every curator on the site bails, leaving only the turnips trying to use Stumble for SEO wank.
And that's how you destroy a good thing. I love how they're out there still trying to make their version work.
Hmm, let's see. Things'll get better if we change the name to Mix. We'll get lots more people to try our crap.
3 people show up.
I'm still mad about that. If they had asked me to pay for a subscription, I would have.
@ike according to ernest it stems from /sbin. though one of the early instances was named karabin based on the karabine gun and thus shortened to kbin (or rather expanded from kbin).
What are some tips for dealing with solicitors (door-to-door salespeople)? Our neighborhood gets a lot of them.
We have a “No solicitors” sign hanging on the front door. Nevertheless, they knock, ring the doorbell, or worse, yell through the front window when it is open, trying to get our attention.
We have a Ring video doorbell and have enabled the automatic “Sorry, we’re not interested” announcement after 15 seconds. These pushy SOBs ignore the sign and the announcement.
When I ultimately find out they are soliciting and I ask why they ignored both the sign and the doorbell announcement, they usually say something like, “I’m not selling anything. I am just working with some people in the neighborhood…” or some such BS.
My wife and I work from home and have had to explain the window shouting to coworkers in meetings. We also have two small children who could be trying to nap at any given time. We have good reasons to not want to be disturbed at home and these assholes disregard that wish.
I will write a negative review online if I find out their name and company they are representing. Any other ways to get these people to leave us alone?
Why is my phone screen's orientation failing to stay locked and how do I fix it?
I have a Samsung Galaxy A71 5G. This usually only happens a few times a week, but my phone seems to be very confused by kbin. I have to hold it vertically or it will switch to landscape orientation every single time. It's annoying. Any ideas?
@HotDogFingies on kbin specifically (if you're using the progressive web app PWA) it currently bypasses your phones landscape or portrait lock. Even on my phone with Android 13, if I've switched off auto rotation and rotate the site it still rotates
That's apparently a bug that's going to be fixed at some point.
Adding /d/domain-name-goes-here to kbin's normal web address will take you to that instance's "homepage" and you can block it there. For example, https://kbin.social/d/feddit.de
Keep in mind, this will only block posts coming from that instance, so you'll still be seeing comments from those users elsewhere, but it should take care of a good deal of it on your feed if you don't mind losing out on the three or four communities there that aren't in german
Thanks for the help! I know how to block an instant but I'm looking to block every instance in the same top level domain, so anything ending in ".de" so that I don't have to manually block several instances. If it's not possible yet that's fair, I know Ernest has a shit ton on his plate.
