Does this still have in-app-purchases? The stream version has them

smeg,

Epic’s page makes it look like it, yeah. Do you know if this is still a “proper” game without them?

keenkoon,

it is. I’ve paid for nothing in it and love this game.

HidingCat,

Shouldn't need to touch them at all.

HidingCat, to freegames in [Epic Games] Homeworld Remastered Collection

The first Homeworld was really something. I didn't feel quite the same way for the second one though. I think the first one's struggle, loss and trek back to the home world resonated more strongly with me.

Spooner, to freegames in [Epic Games] Homeworld Remastered Collection

Thanks very much for the reminder to login.

I’ve already got it on Steam, but what the hell.

The original Homeworld from 1999, was easily one of the best ever RTS games to grace a humble PC.

/If only there was a Red Dwarf mod… ;)

Murder By Numbers was so fun, hope more people try it

Acamon, to games in The Elder Scrolls Online & Murder by Numbers now free on Epic Games Store

Well, it worked, I’ve made an Epic Games account just to get a free copy of Elder Scrolls Online. Which I know I will never play seriously, and in the end will probably not even get round to installing just to see what it’s like…

Kevlarrelic,

Epic is great for free games. Check back around mid December they give away games every day with AAA games on Christmas and New Year. Stuff like GTA5 and CIV6.

Zoomboingding,
@Zoomboingding@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, I got Bioshock 1-3 and Death Stranding (for free) last year

TFS, to games in The Elder Scrolls Online & Murder by Numbers now free on Epic Games Store

How free is elder scrolls? Do you need a bunch of expansion packs and a subscription too?

anamethatisnt,

If you enjoy ESO then the free version is a trap as buying the ESO + expansions pack is much cheaper than buying all the expansions.
You don’t need the expansions to try out the game, nor a sub.

Kevlarrelic,

AFAIK, you can play the base game for free, no subscription needed. That said, there is a subscription that buys you a better user experience, and once you run out of content you’ll have to purchase the expansions.

sacredbirdman,

There's a lot of content to play as a free player. For me the most important thing the subscription offers is the unlimited crafting material bag. You don't need it but if you want to be a crafter it will be painful without it. Three classes and bunch of content is behind expansion packs.. all of which you can unlock by buying the current "collection" version which includes all the previous expansions also and goes for like 60 bucks..

skullone, to games in Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free

But then I’d have to use the Epic store. Nah.

smeg, to freegames in [Epic Games] The Elder Scrolls Online

I assumed that this was already free!

Smatt,

Yes I had the same idea, it went free-to-play at some point I think.

smeg,

Epic is still listing it as normally having a price, so maybe not?

Smatt,

Guess not 🤷

Not that I care, this is going on my Epic pile of unplayed free games.

CeruleanRuin,
@CeruleanRuin@lemmy.one avatar

I keep telling myself that someday I’ll be able to buy a computer that can actually handle any of these, and then I’ll have a library of games ready to go.

smeg,

A lot of the smaller ones will run on any old potato so it’s worth trying them out if you’re feeling lucky

Smatt,

Yeah, like train valley from a couple weeks ago was a cute and relaxing little experience for a couple of hours.

Anything without a 3D world will run fine on integrated graphics/potato level GPUs like you said.

CeruleanRuin,
@CeruleanRuin@lemmy.world avatar

My current potato is going on 8 years old and wasn’t exactly top of the line when it was new. It works as a media server and not much else.

smeg,

Have a look at GOG’s free games, some are from the 90s so should run fine for you!

Summzashi, to games in Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free

Pretty sure ESO is a free to play game

oldlamps,

You still need to buy the client and the expansions you want to play, but not required to pay monthly like some other MMOs

arc, to games in Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free

I’ll give the game a go but I’ve played so many MMOs to know the warning signs of a game using grind (travel, upkeep, etc.). If that happens I’ll be gone as fast as I signed up.

And I say that as a veteran of Asherons Call, Everquest, EQ 2, Lord of the Rings Online, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft, A Tale in the Desert, Company of Heroes, Company of Villains, Guild Wars and many more. I think I played EQ for 18 months on subscription but the amount of grind convinced me I’m not going to put up with that any more. When those other games resorted to the same BS I was gone.

oldlamps,

There’s a lot of QoL stuff, and the dialog is all fully voice acted so the emphasis is really more on exploring the world and story.

I’ve been playing it at my own pace for years, and never worry much about what level I’m at or things like that

Does ESO have a ‘story’ you can play through? I’ve seen it pop up a few times over the years and all I know about it is that it can become a massive time sink haha.

janNatan,

There is a story. I can’t comment on how good it is, because I didn’t realize enjoy the game and only played a few hours.

the_postminimalist,

Yes, it has plenty. In the base game alone you have:

  • Main story line (with Molag Bal being the main antagonist)
  • A story line for each of the three alliances (you can even play through the other alliances’ storylines even if youre not part of them)
  • Guild storylines like Mages Guild and Fighters Guild
  • A separate storyline based in the zone of Craglorn (south eastern Hammerfell)
  • Plenty of side quests everywhere

And then with DLC/expansions, the amount and quality of storylines grows by a lot.

But I don’t even play for the stories. The raiding is very fun and challenging. I don’t play the game like a time sink. I just log in for my scheduled raids and log out, and I play at a pretty high level. It’s one of the less grindy MMOs. They’ve reduced RNG related stuff by a lot over the years.

I’m always happy to help out anyone on PC NA

AnotherLlama,
@AnotherLlama@lemmy.ml avatar

Neat, thanks. I’ll have to give it a go!

the_postminimalist,

And let me know if you’re ever in search of a guild of any kind. I have my connections :)

Ferris,
@Ferris@discuss.online avatar

yes. The basegame story will take you a while to complete, and will reward you with a hat. Cadwell and Sheogorath are a joy the first time through. (main quest and mages guild)

I really enjoyed murder by numbers. It’s a visual novel which is normally not my thing but, the characters and story were fun.

toastus, to games in Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free

Are those any good?

Rynelan,

If you like MMO games with good singleplayer gameplay you can’t miss with ESO. Base game covers a lot. The expansion packs will be even more.

And unlike a lot of MMO games. No monthly charges necessary but possible. If you decide to sub to ESO+ you get access to expansion stuff except the lastest one and you won’t get access to the classes that got introduced in the expansions.

But… you’ll only need to buy the lastest expansion collection set to get all of that. The upgrade pack is only for people who got the previous expansions already.

xcxcb,

For free? Yeah ESO is a good deal.

However, be aware of its massive shortcomings and once you begin to feel the bite of the horrendous cash store be prepared to ditch it and move on. At a certain point it’s just a disappointment considering how great it could be if they weren’t trying to nickel and dime you constantly (and it’s far more than a nickle or dime too).
