livus, to news in Gaza, babies in incubators at risk as hospitals run out of fuel, UN says
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This is heartbreaking. If you've ever had an incubator baby in your family, you know how incredibly tiny and vulnerable they are and how it feels like a miracle or gift that this child you love is alive.

Armen12, to worldnews in Ethiopia: Mass killings continue, risk of further ‘large-scale’ atrocities

So where are the democrats to condemn these war crimes?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Armen12 Abiy folded most of the opposition political parties into a "new" party so it is effectively a one party state these days. The big challenges to that came out of Tigray and Amhara.

If you are talking about American politics 🙄 then yes your Biden administration has been placing sanctions on the Ethiopian government because of the human rights situation there.

However it recently lifted the food sanctions. By all means write to your representatives about this.

Armen12,

Sanctions just hurt innocent people in the end, they accomplish nothing

livus, (edited )
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Armen12 yes, this is definitely the case with food sanctions. After the US and the UN withdrew food aid to Ethiopia earlier this year, there were reports of more people dying because of it.

I really need someone to tell me how to feel about this.

An army of 15 year olds with a mission to save lives is something pulled out of a novel, not real life.

Edit: After a few replies I feel even more confused and afraid.

exploding_whale,

My concern is more the possibility of defining disinformation in some politically conveniemt manner. Will this be some despots minitru?

Colombo,

My concern is more the possibility of defining disinformation in some politically conveniemt manner.

Its already happening. In fact, looking at it from a wider perspective than nowadays teenagers are often able to, the modern "fight against disinformation" is just fighting propaganda with one's own propaganda. And if you read the Hittite and Egyptian descriptions of Battle of Khadesh, it isn't really a new thing either.

exploding_whale,

Its always happening, but the tools available evolve and the level of support fluctuates. We have a lot of new tools right now and what seems like a disturbing level of support.

sqgl, to news in Dozens of cancer patients could die as Gaza’s main cancer treatment hospital forced to stop most activities over fuel shortage, UN says

Hamas is maintaining a stockpile of more than 200,000 gallons of fuel for the rockets it fires into Israel and the generators that provide clean air and electricity to its network of underground tunnels, according to U.S. officials, current and former Israeli officials and academics.

nbcnews.com/…/hamas-hoarding-vast-amounts-fuel-ga…

Israel released photos of Hamas fuel stores however I don’t understand how they can know if there is anything in them.

Maybe night time infrared imagery indicates that full ones retain heat? (And maybe water would retain it differently?). But even if we presume that is possible, why don’t IDF just bomb them if they are so sure it is Hamas fuel?

tallwookie, to worldnews in Ethiopia: Mass killings continue, risk of further ‘large-scale’ atrocities

unless the UN invades and actively enforces a ceasefire, this brush war will smolder for decades.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

will smolder for decades

@tallwookie maybe. The war in Tigray has many genocidal elements, including a man-made famine caused by destruction of crops, equipment, and water infrastructure.

So if the UN doesn't do something, Abiy might be able to accomplish genocide in a shorter timeframe than that.

boud,
@boud@framapiaf.org avatar

@livus

I would rather word that as "a second genocide".

Deliberately killing 10% of the Tigrayan population from Nov 2020 to Nov 2022, by: systematically executing males of teenage age and above, massive systematic sexual violence, looting of most food/agricultural/industrial resources and holding a very tight siege is argued by several researchers as showing intent [1][2]. Clearly that was the .

boud,
@boud@framapiaf.org avatar

@livus

The report itself ([3], point 72) finds #CrimesAgainstHumanity (by ENDF + EDF + Amhara/Afar Special Forces + 'fano'), not #Genocide. Tigrayan forces committed #WarCrimes (not crimes against humanity) (point 71).

@tallwookie No, a "UN invasion" would solve nothing. The question for rich-country outsiders is which local/regional/continental groups/institutions should be supported. African civil society has plenty of ideas and is very active.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@boud Thanks for pointing out that distinction about the report. From what I have seen over the last few years from credible NGO reports, eyewitness testimony, video footage etc I am pretty sure it is a genocide.

I also agree with you that this is something I'd like to see tackled by AU or similar as a first option.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@boud

"a second genocide"

At this point it's a question of do we count waves / phases of genocide as multiple genocides.

    awww cry me a fucking river

    Gaza was given to Arabs for self rule and determination in 2005, all Jews left Gaza, even Jewish graveyards were dug up and moved, it was theirs to do with as they liked.

    They've spent the last 18 years making into a terrorist Disneyland with a dozen Islamofascist terrorist organizations with the stated goal of killing Jews and destroying the state of Israel, they've fired hundreds of thousands of missiles into Israel indiscriminately targeting civilians, and launched countless cross borders attacks against Jewish civilians, including one that caused the largest loss of Jewish life in any single day, anywhere, since the Holocaust on October 7th.

    They were given Gaza to live in freedom and self determination, they used it to kill Jews. They were warned. They chose to ignore the warnings.

    These acts of terrorism were perpetrated by the entire Gazan community, they voted for Hamas, and allowed Hamas to rule their government for the last 17 years, Hamas and all the other Islamic terrorists in Gaza are not outsiders, they were born in Gaza of Gazans, they were raised in Gaza, they were educated in Gaza, they married and had children of their own in Gaza, their Parents, teachers, mosques, hospitals, are all in Gaza, from which they use to hid and store weapons to attack Jews, Hamas, PIJ and all the other Islamic terrorist in Gaza ARE Gaza, there has been no uprising in Gaza, there have only been attacks on Israel. This is what Gazans have supported and sacrificed for in every way they possibly could.

    And now it's here. I do hope they enjoy what they've worked generationaly to achieve. There will be no ceasefire this time.

    krellor,

    Dude, no matter how you feel about the actions of Hamas and other violent groups, empathy for the children impacted by war and violence is a sign of basic humanity. Telling children to cry you a river is just sick.

    tesseract, to news in Gaza, babies in incubators at risk as hospitals run out of fuel, UN says
