So here is a question to the @bookstodon community: what is the best book you have read this year?

zakyfarms,
@zakyfarms@heads.social avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy @bookstodon The Deficit Myth, by Stephanie Kelton. Completely blew my mind.

While I often use the local indie , I also am often in remoter places with no bookshop (sob) So I am interested in online book sellers.
Who among the booklovers uses new-to-me Tertulia.com?
Is it even open to folks outside the US? I'd love to hear about anyone's experience/thoughts

Or alternatives you would recommend 🌞

@lastrobot @bookstodon I’ve never heard of that one but I’ve been using bookshop.org for years, no complaints.

I've just seen the Netflix series All The Light We Cannot See, based on the novel by Anthony Doerr which is sitting on my bookcase. It has tempted me to read and/or reread some novels based in WWII.

Does anyone have any recommendations of novels based historically in or around WWII?

@bookstodon

zakyfarms,
@zakyfarms@heads.social avatar

@chestas @bookstodon it’s about WWI, not WWII, but I really enjoyed A Soldier of the Great War.

Tell me a good book you’ve read this year that you’d recommend.

I’ll start: Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom

I've read 11 books so far in October, including five by Octavia E. Butler! Still need to read Kindred and Fledgling and possibly some of her short fiction to reach my goal for

@skiffyandfanty @TrishEM @bookstodon haha I was going to suggest you read Flicker next, but I see you already did!

I have been so intimidated to start this (been on my shelf for months) but I think with the weather getting cooler and the nights longer, it’s time. @bookstodon

@otherdog @bookstodon I read a few chapters years ago, put it down with intentions of trying again but haven’t yet. Let me know how it goes!

@bookstodon I need #BookRecommendations please! I’m looking for low #fantasy recommendations. Romance can be there but I want plenty of adventure & banter to go along with it. Nothing epic- magic should take a back seat and it’d be amazing if the main character did not have magic at all. Best if MC is not royal/deity/etc.

The closest thing I’ve read to this is Intisar Khanani’s The Dauntless Path series (which is amazing and I highly recommend). Anything else like it?

@skaeth @bookstodon have you read Steven Brust?

zakyfarms,
@zakyfarms@heads.social avatar

@BunRab @skaeth @bookstodon I enjoyed that trilogy very much, but I was thinking the Vlad Taltos series might be more what the OP was looking for. But you really can’t go wrong either way!

So Mastodon #Book folks. If knowing nothing about the person you had to recommend a book (or maybe one fiction and one nonfiction) what would you go with? #Books #Bookstodon @bookstodon @bookstodons

Wandered across an old email I had sent a friend when she and I were both reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell back in 2015. I had quoted the following exchange because it's beautiful:

"And there are days when I would be away."
"Where?"
"Oh, wherever men of my sort used to go. Wandering on paths that other men have not seen. Behind the sky. On the other side of the rain."

@dbsalk @bookstodon have you read her new book yet, Piranesi? Rough start but finished so strong.

@weebdeluxe @bookstodon it’s on my shelf waiting to be read. The plot sounds vaguely like Flicker; have you read that one?

@Behindthepages @bookstodon not exactly in space, but Wool is a sci-fi murder mystery (beginning of a trilogy). Currently a TV show on Apple called Silo.
