I need to buy a gift for a family-of-friend. I am informed that they really like mystery stories, especially in historical settings, but are not fond of SFF.

I assume this means they have already read the obvious candidates, the Cadfaels and the like, or if they haven't then that's a conscious choice on their part which means I shouldn't buy them one of those.

What's a non-SFF mystery story you've enjoyed recently? Recommend me a book please!

C Samson's books are pretty good. There's a load, like Sovereign and Dark Fire

I don't do Christmas as I'm an atheist. But I heard about elf on a shelf so I thought I'd

This was a quick shot. Feist is on the shelf below with the Dwarves books by Heitz which has elves in it. There's a load of Sarah Maas somewhere too

I've just seen the Netflix series All The Light We Cannot See, based on the novel by Anthony Doerr which is sitting on my bookcase. It has tempted me to read and/or reread some novels based in WWII.

Does anyone have any recommendations of novels based historically in or around WWII?

Thanks, I might look at WWI novels after. See how much I'm wiped out by war novels

@bookstodon Tomorrow (today in Australia and New Zealand) is Awareness Day. What really good novels have you read that feature older protagonists?

These come to my mind:

Remnant Population, Elizabeth Moon

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, Olga Tokarczuk

Deacon King Kong, James McBride

We Spread, Iain Reid

Old God's Time, Sebastian Barry

The Remains of the Day
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Magic Powers

I haven’t read all of these, but I am convinced he is probably a genius of some sort, as he seems to ooze great intelligence. He’s an author I’d like to hear speak & while I don’t get star struck, I might make him a batch of a peanut butter fudge—or wait, scratch that. That might be a little creepy (ie. Annie Wilkes from Misery) 😉

I’d listen & then quickly leave.

I first read Orfeo and thought, wow, this is a writer with something special about them. Then the Overstory which blew me away, so I had to read it again. Finally I read Bewilderment and again was stunned by how good it was.

I have a massive to be read list, but thanks for reminding me to read more Powers

They would fit the time, so I'd be happy to put them in.

Thanks

I suppose, but they were both household names in the late 1980s at least.

We need to wait for someone with a first edition...actually I might know someone, but I'm in Australia and they're in England. I'll try to message them and see if they have anything

Good point, though I think Kathleen Turner was a massive star in the UK then. The Romancing the Stone films with Michael Douglas were really popular as I remember

Book size is important to me. Not number of pages, but the actual size, height and width etc. I don't like books that are too big. I prefer smaller books that are easier to hold and carry to a cafe.

I know size shouldn't matter, but...
