and that's enough about Threads for me. i followed the hashtag for a day. you get tired of hearing the same thing over and over.

i lean toward having trans people in the "mental disorder" category

i have a mental disorder myself but i'm not under the mistaken impression that this is healthy and normal, or that it should have its own flag.

by all means, go off and do your thing. but you're not a woman. sorry.

i'm not Brad Pitt or a pony that farts rainbows. that's life, you know?

@BaroqueInMind @poppyart if gender dysphoria isn't a mental disorder, i guess i'll start denying that i have ADHD and mild ASD, and that these are mental disorders.

i mean... SOMETHING went wrong there.

you're reading hatred into my statement that isn't there. a bigot is usually antagonistic.

ironically, you're the antagonistic one by calling me a bigot.

the past five years have been a gradual process of going through these stages:

  1. i'm a computer programmer.

  2. why am i so exhausted all the time?

  3. i just need to find an employer who doesn't burn me out.

  4. i have and diagnoses now. i'm . wish i had known at an earlier age.

  5. the medications are doing bad things to me.

  6. loss of family member, burnout, mental breakdown.

  7. every programming job seems to burn me out.

  8. the job i had wanted since i was a kid was the wrong job for me.

  9. i have no career now and i'm also unemployable.

  10. you know, i never developed a social life and i never started a family. it wasn't important to me at 20 or 30 but now, at 40, it feels like something's missing.

  11. i'm an adult now and i'm no longer very interested in the hobbies i had at 20. there's nothing to do now.

  12. i have a drinking problem.

  13. why could i never do housework properly? oh, right, the ...

  14. i have nothing to lose, so i guess i'll try to ask the government to help me.

  15. practical home assistance granted. admitted to back-to-work programme. applied for a social support contact today, to give myself more to do.

  16. i'm nothing at the moment. i was broken down and now i have to build a new me, from scratch.

@chrislw i was in my early 30s when i began suspecting something wasn't right. i knew i was different but chalked it up to being a nerd until i began running into problems and they grew bigger and bigger. i saw a psychiatrist in public healthcare about it. he dismissed #ADHD and said i had mild #ASD, but didn't seem very confident about it. there's no treatment for that and it isn't supposed to cause much trouble so i just kept trying to work for the next ~5 years.

i landed what i thought was a good job with nice colleagues, but felt myself beginning to struggle again, and that's when i contacted an independent psychiatrist with ADHD expertise to get a second opinion. he dismissed the ASD diagnosis and concluded it was ADHD, and he seemed confident about that.

the ADHD part always seemed to match me better, but i'm thinking there's some ASD in there as well, seeing as a lot of nerds are on the spectrum. the label AuDHD feels fitting here. some kind of #neurodivergence. spicy brain.

@bike that's where the big questions start cropping up. i've been asking myself what i want. a lot. the programme i'm entering early next year is meant to help figure that out. they offer job training and career counselling and such. i really need to try some things out to see what's right to me. i think something a bit more service-oriented or practical maybe. i like to be of help and to work with my hands.

thor,
@thor@berserker.town avatar

@chrislw there's a certain bliss in ignorance. learning that some of your problems are a condition can be a bit of a downer. on the other hand, it helps you develop more self-awareness. certain challenges become easier to predict ahead of time so you can take them into account. the formal diagnosis could entitle you to certain types of assistance and benefits, depending on where you live. it's a lot to take in.

i'm good enough at computer programming that a girl came here to sleep with me

i'm not doing it again though.

now she has to be good enough as a girl to come here.

"product-market fit"

it's kind of a weird way of approaching entrepreneurship

if you're setting up a company for the purpose of finding a problem to solve, you don't have a business.

you stumble across a problem that you fix and accidentally bump into more people who also need help with that, and THEN you have a business.

you do not have a business just because you have funding and a business tax ID.

good audio production hits extra hard if you own a pair of HS-8 monitors

best speakers i ever owned

i'm often broke but i invested in a pair of these. i've seen them in fairly serious recording studios.

if you're recording and mixing, i'll scream like SpectreSoundStudios on YouTube when fans ask if you should invest in monitors

YES

JUST GET MONITORS

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT

thor,
@thor@berserker.town avatar

also, when you're new to audio production

i'm going to give some bad advice here, but if you care about good audio

maybe spend a bit more on the nicer monitors and have noodles for a few weeks. they'll last a long time.

i'm living on very little right now but i have VERY nice audio for everything because i lived on noodles a few years back.

as a rough rule

one-time investments are not where you should be saving the money.

those little things you spend on everyday is what empties your bank account all the time.

you're not gonna be rich by saving on daily expenses however. i think you can spend on those.

the thing is that when you happen to have more, invest in something.

a trip to visit a good friend is an investment. buying a new instrument to explore your musical abilities is also an investment. those last a long time, so they're an investment into your happiness. any wife who doesn't get this should shut up.

@freemo correlation does not imply causation

this careful management simply implies greater self control in general

thor,
@thor@berserker.town avatar

@freemo even if this is the case, the components you describe may or may not be what got you out of there

i've met extroverts who have no friends because they're also kind of neurotic/schizo. very outgoing and need to be around many people, but they kind of push people away with their nervous and somewhat eccentric behaviour.

@mcc turns out it and cigarettes need no advertising. people buy it in droves anyway.
