i’ve found this cute little app called photon that does exactly what I need. Unlike snapdrop, it doesn’t need to connect to a server. Unlike warpinator, it works....
It seems anytime I try to check out Mastodon it is always some negative political view or affiliation of why X, Y & Z is bad. Is this just what most people like boosting or is it a sign of botting to push negativity over the more positive headlines?...
Someone got to break the ice. Lemmy used to be very tech savvy, still us but now there are other topics to discuss. You gotta get on there and post into the void, get the ball rolling.
Hello there! Im looking for increased privacy when it comes to my network connections. So far I know of TOR as an almost absolute bastion of security, but how do I ensure the remaining network traffic is encrypted and private? I know of signal for communication, and I’m aware of VPN’s. However I’m not sure whether to trust...
TOR is the closest thing you will see to a “federated VPN”. You should always trust your VPN more than your ISP. There are open source VPNs like IVPN and Mullvad.
Mastodon is turning into what Twitter was and right now is likely the one out of the three to turn into the biggest echo chamber. Twitter under Elon if he keeps his promise will have free speech and no blocking. Nostr is censorship resistant. Mastodon instance admins can defederate other instsnce they do not like and turn mastodon into a echo chamber.
I think Nostr wins since as far as I know they got a blocking feature and users can choose the wild west free speech flow of information or go into a corner of Nostr and follow your interests.
Is twitter truly free speech, no but it has improved since Elon took over. I do not think twitter will every be as free speech as it was several years go.
More people of all kinds need to get on Nostr to keep it from being an echo chamber.
And free speech means you will have to deal with “mean words”, just have a thick skin and ignore it. I been getting lots of flack the past few days here on Lemmy and I just drop it and move on. I got no time to let someones comment take root in my head.
I like this since it forces people who do not like having their world view shaken up to have their world view shaken up. This will either limit echo chambers on the platform or cause people to leave Twitter. Most likely cause people to leave Twitter which I am all for since it is a big tech spyware platform filled with toxic people.
Nostr is were it is at! Not mastodon.
BTW I do not have a Twitter account nor do I use Twitter.
Either the forests are not being managed well or someone is starting these fires. If it is arson, it is some environmental terrorist likely trying to prove a point by destroying forests and communities.
Why is everything a conspiracy? What is ironic is how many “conspiracies” during COVID came true like vaccine passports. So being called a “conspiracy theorist” is a compliment. It means I am likely onto something.
I know we aren’t allowed to use Chrome. We can’t use Brave. But how does the Lemmy community feel about the Vivaldi Browser? or is it still not Firefox…
Hatred often makes you want to hurt people, but people hurt peope in the name of greed more often, and not only with less potential for guilt, but is often the cause of delusional accolades and reassurance both from within oneself and from others....
True, hatred and greed is embed in human nature. However making laws against greed will likely not solve much but discentivise productivity. Or as libertarians will say “cause atlas to shrug”.
Im not on the “I hate capitalism train”. However yeah I understand workplace relations between employee and employer overall is in the toilet.
As of now, the best solution I can come up with is refusing to work for morons. The more that do this, the harder it will be for morons to find staff and run their operations.
When homo sapians were nomadic, we were quite a tribal social group. The alpha male always had more resources in the group which you can call greed. This was a thing before civilization. And lets be honest, if we had more, would we really share it? Most people want more but when we get more, we do not divide it with others in our community. Very few give up their time and money for charity.
You make a fair point, however when you work for someone, that is your choice. To shop at a business is your choice. If you do not like a business, do not work for it and do not shop there.
Stealing from someone is stealing from a person who took time to produce that item. In the case of s store, the store had to buy the product from a distributor.
So theft is still inmoral. Is theft greed? Yeah it could be and in most cases its greed and selfishness. However the thief in most cases can buy the item but chooses not to.
Yes I have heard of the dunning-kreuger effect. If your employer is a moron, go find another employer to work with that is a capitable at being an employer.
One can complain about their situation, or one can do something about it. Stsrt your own business, expand your compass. Yeah you might have to try out five or ten jobs until you find one that does not have a moron as a boss and has good pay. Sitting around and whining about it and demanding “laws should be made” is really just a form of communism. Communism did not work.
I get it, there are lots of employers who are morons and pay very little. And yes, stop working for them at all cost. Do not feed the beast, starve them out of workers. I know of places locally that had poor working conditions and offered little pay that went under because they could not find any staff.
Have to use Windows for work (I’ve asked), the ads have been getting worse and worse on my work laptop. Today got a game ad notification… That’s clearly too far, right? Like I have to clear notifications, so I have to see it
Not me or anyone I know thinks that when seeing someone with a mask on. Nobody wore a mask when they were sick before 2020. And when I have the sniffles, I never wear a mask. If I am really sick, I will just stay home. Just like how it was done before 2020.
To summarize it, people are compliant and conformative. Or as one person puts it, “The normie conformie”. People do not remember events or basic details that occurred a month ago or more, such as “Two weeks to flatten the curve”, or “You only need two shots of vaccine”. And how quickly the masses can be conditioned to a new narritive, even if it is radical and extreme.
And it explains how the Germans back in the 1930s essentially let the Nazi government discriminate jews. The vaccine mandates was the darkest moment in the entire pandemic. Many people were forced to take a vaccine that many were not confortable taking or else you lose your job, cannot go out and be a part of society or even board a plane, denying people the option of fleeing their country. And how many people thought such polices was acceptable and needed.
A study was done which found that 1/4 Canadians thought unvaccinated people should be thrown in jail, 1/4 Canadians! WTF?
Those who think mask mandates or vaccine mandates is necessary, is no better than a German that thought jewish people deserved to be harrasses, lose their businesses or sent to camps. And the irony is how many of the people that want vaccine mandate think they are the most tolerant group of people, but this is far from the truth.
Nobody wants to kill your Grandma with COVID. However this thinking of forcing mandates has lead to lots of discrimination.
They should of stayed home, not come to work. Instead of pushing masks, people need to stop calling in sick when they stub their toe and start calling in sick when they have the flu or a bad cough.
The pandemic was just a horrible time in history and we do not need to keep any of its rituals around in daily life. No one was considered inconsiderate for not wearing a mask in 2019, and no one should of ever been considered inconsiderate for not wearing a mask, especially now in 2023.
FOSS stands for "free open source software. Open source means the code for the software publically available for anyone to see. A fork is when someone take a project like firefox and clones it (copying the source code), make any chsnges they want (such as removing the in-browser block list) and re-releasing the app.
A globalist leaning. Macron if I recall comes from big money in the financial world. The do not have a leaning poltically, they are amoral, dark triad.
There is no need for a public health strategy. This idea that we all must bubble wrap the world is insane. Germs and viruses will always exist. Do what is best for you stop getting mad at others who have different threat models than you.
I wish everyone used Linux, but I know that will never happen. I use Linux and will help anyone that wants to use linux and thats were it ends. I move on and am happy being a Linux user. I do not expect the government to force the population to use Linux to make a more digitial secure and private society, that will be insane and will piss off most of the population. Mandates are no different.
The world will always have a hint of danger, and germs and viruses are included in this mix. Life expectancy did not increase due to public compliants to health measures, it increased due to things like soap, showering/bathing every day or two instead of every few months and the standard for hygeine in factories like meat plants. And medicine has come a long way to cure old nasty diseases.
Edit: I edited my comment because I was a bit rude. I apologise for that.
Don’t know what you said but I do appreciate the apology.
If COVID was as bad as it was advertised. We would of seen the results in the world, and therefore people would voluntarily take the appropate percautions. No need for state intervention. If the pandemic was bad and the state did nothing about it, except maybe advise some caution which is how Japan mostly handled the pandemic, people will do what is nesissary.
Why does politics have to get involved? Because the government got so involved in the pandemic, that why it became politicial. Sometimes ignoring a problem like a virus you cannot really control is the best course of action and it will take care of itself in a grassroots sort of a way.
For one Plaugue Inc is a game. And most of the models that were made to project the outcome of COVID were way off.
Again, why does the state had to get involved? The government did not ban sex, needles or go on a hardcore ban on drugs back when HIV was the scare. HIV does still exist but has not wiped out the human race. COVID or any virus is no different. If we have like HIV 2.0, do what you want for any precautions as a personal threat model. There is no need to enforce it on others.
