Gah. I've just visited a #SecondWorldWar group on Facebook, and the first two posts I saw were wrong.

One had a photo of a Sturmtiger claiming it was a Maus.

The other mentioned the Victoria Cross. It correctly mentioned that only one person won the VC twice during the war, but then listed how many VCs were awarded by country, and missed out New Zealand. Charles Upham, the man who won it twice, was a New Zealander.

I feel like I'm being trolled.

@RPBook @worldwarshistory in my experienced "being on Facebook" is not a filter which selects for the sharpest knives in the drawer, haha. generally other sites and forums serve as a better signal for that

@RPBook @worldwarshistory I hear you. everybody is in similar boat

I will say that I've generally had a better time interacting with folks on places that are a little more elite or geeky, like Mastodon. Facebook and Twitter are among the worst. Reddit has gotten bad in the big forums. YouTube obvs a hellhole. in theory HN should be nice but its riddled with pinhead psychopaths, so, theres that, haha

Don't tell me everyone is a 'little bit autistic' until you're able to demonstrate what it feels like to feel completely wiped put by a simple task that plays against all of your needs. No, it's not everyone is a little averse to change. It's a complete unravelling of my reality.

Autistic Unmasking is a profound experience.

It feels both liberating and terrifying.

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I hear you. a lot of engineers and programmers I know seem to be somewhere along that spectrum to varying degrees

We all know that are fun, but can they:

Make you cry?

Tell you a powerful love story?

Make you think differently about war? About the environment? About your own choices?

This examines the relationship between gaming and storytelling:

@thevglibrary @bookstodon one of my goals for my game Slartboz is to have scenes and situations in it that make the player cry

in a good way

Christmas decorations are going up! You’ve got the tree, lights, asbestos… Wait, what?

For decades, asbestos was sold as artificial snow. It could be bought in boxes to be sprinkled onto trees, ornaments, nativity scenes, etc. It was so popular, many older ornaments still have traces of asbestos.

It was also used in film. The most famous scene with asbestos snow is in Wizard of Oz (1939), when snow falls on Dorothy and her friends, waking them up.

@dirtysexyhistory @histodons whenever I think about how we're supposed to trust the FDA, EPA, CDC etc today that such-and-such is "safe" (like any particular food in stores, or pkg material) I always try to remember what the gov allowed regarding Asbestos for so long. how it was portrayed & used everywhere

I believe there are well-meaning individs in those orgs, obvs, but the history of US gov regulation is one of corruption & stupid lies

ie. what is the unwitting asbestos of 2023?

@economics @dirtysexyhistory @histodons

the word "must" is doing some heavy lifting in your post there, @economics

however, this:

"... so there is an error of thought here."

is the part that makes you a jerk: one who lacks manners when out in public. in other words, a kind of "error of thought" there?

bye
