Anyone know if this work is tracked anywhere? I’m suddenly really suspicious of continuing to run my own instance.

Is this game even playable yet?

They even mean the same thing technically! The “jail” specifically refers to a jailed shell, as BSD jail, so both jailbreaking and rooting (as in Unix root) both quite literally mean the same thing, privilege escalation.

This is kind of interesting but not surprising, jurisdictionally. Putting the politics of Israel/Palestine aside for a minute, you can see how it could open a can of worms to allow a foreign government (Israel) to be sued abroad (Netherlands). Presumably if you wanted to do that, you’d need to sue in the government’s jurisdiction (israel).

Even if you won a case like this abroad (Netherlands), they would have no mechanism for enforcement, as they can’t force a foreign state (Israel) to abide by their laws.

Answering the intent of the question: no I don’t think so as that would rule out 99% of stuff we all watch and play these days.

Answering the literal phrasing of the question: these types of “would you do X for Y dollars” questions are suspect because the impact of the amount of money is subjective and entirely dependent on your personal situation. Readers who are broke and readers who are millionaires will have entirely different thoughts due to their own financial situations, and so the answers are unlikely to be informative. As opposed to something more objective like, “do you think you could deal with only consuming free content for a year”.

sparky,
@sparky@lemmy.federate.cc avatar

Now I get your point too. Alas, hard to phrase it for objective answers, as who would choose to do this without any incentive?

For travel I usually use as a rule of thumb, that you need to stay the same number of days as there were hours in the flight to get there. So for example a quick two hour hop lends itself nicely to a weekend getaway, whereas a transcontinental flight implies staying a week or two. This tends to be advantageous anyway, for jet lag purposes.

Important to note, this doesn’t affect online multiplayer or availability on newer consoles, eg you’ll continue to be able to buy, download and play 360 titles on Xbox One / Xbox Series.

Therein may lie the point; when I worked there, teams were forever over-burdened with outstanding tasks and under-budgeted with time and resources. So the only way to work in that environment is to stack rank priorities and defer less important stuff to later updates. And well, a journal app is a pretty low priority, compared to performance and stability of the OS as well as more important features like iMessage, Maps and so on.

MS probably wants to make sure that Series S doesn’t end up missing out on games or getting subpar experiences, given they promised their customers that it’s the same as an X just at a lower resolution. You can see how they want to avoid outcomes like Series S being confined to lower player counts, smaller maps, or other game-restricting features.

But they’ve painted themselves into a corner in this case. Split screen requires rendering the whole game twice, which the S isn’t powerful enough to do. It’s also probably a feature few players will actually use.

Seems like this case should be an exception to the parity requirements.

It looks like cross-device integration is coming to Android (www.theverge.com)

Google is reportedly planning to introduce a new Android feature that will let users link their various Android devices together, similar to Continuity features across the Apple ecosystem. Android expert Mishaal Rahman posted about the potential feature, noting that it could allow Android devices that are signed into the same...

Nothing new there IMO. As soon as Google Play Services became the invisible magical mystery dependency without which nothing works, Android was effectively tied to it permanently.

It would be nice to have a viable third mobile OS, ideally one truly FOSS. Android has always felt Google first with open source as an afterthought.

Worth noting this article is from last week, and the supposed redline date has already come and gone without any military intervention.

I agree with you. CarPlay is a must have feature in 2023. I wouldn’t buy a car without a backup camera or parking sensors anymore, and I sure as hell won’t buy a car without CarPlay either. It’s such a bizarre decision by GM.

Well, it pretty much feels like this! Took it in Santiago from the tallest building downtown :-)

Santiago is a cool town. I’ve been twice and I would definitely recommend a visit. It kind of answers the question, “what would Mexico City be like if it were in a developed, first-world country?”

I think it’s time to cancel my subscription and instead use the net. Usenet.

sparky,
@sparky@lemmy.federate.cc avatar

It does and it’s alive and well for piracy (alt.binaries.*). As for text discussion well. It’s mostly spam and Nazis. But it’s great for sucking down content!

sparky,
@sparky@lemmy.federate.cc avatar

Haha, well said

sparky,
@sparky@lemmy.federate.cc avatar

I think it is worth it. Usenet has a lot of advantages, like not needing seeders. If the content’s there, you suck it down at the full speed of your connection. That said, sometimes things get DMCA’d so you have to try to download several of them, until you find one that works. Generally smaller servers are less likely to get DMCA’d. I personally use XSNews.nl having switched from NewsHosting and notice a better availability of files (eg less DMCAs). But that minor hiccup aside, it’s much faster and easier than torrenting once you get set up.

My setup is Usenapp for macOS plus XSNews as a host and a paid NZBPlanet membership for search - which you can plug right into a lot of clients, Usenapp included. So basically it’s a magical search engine and download manager that can one-click pirate just about anything at the full speed of my fiber connection. Glorious!

For the serious pirates there’s a thing called Radarr too, I haven’t dabbed in it but I understand there’s a way to set up your Synology NAS or whatever to auto-pirate new episodes of shows and stuff.

I’m a frequent globetrotter. I find Apple Maps’ quality is basically proportional to the install base in the region. In the US, UK, Canada, Germany… it’s as good or better than Google Maps. In Android-dominant countries though? Good luck. Try it Poland or Portugal and the results are mixed. As for less developed countries? In Mexico or Brazil it’s next to useless.

It’s pretty telling that a large portion of the switch game library are ps3/360 ports. I love first party Nintendo titles as much as the next guy but it’s beyond time for a refresh. Console was a potato at release but now it’s a fucking dinosaur. really just not beefy enough for modern stuff.

It seems surprising that Russians would want to buy property in the occupation zone, with the war still ongoing. If Ukraine wins, no doubt their property rights will be declared null and they will be sent packing. Why take the risk? My only guess is that they must be so heavily propagandised as to not seriously contemplate the possibility of loss.

sparky,
@sparky@lemmy.federate.cc avatar

True but that’s been occupied for a lot longer and is also farther away, so it would be easier to feel “secure” there for a propagandised Russian. But places like Mariupol on the other hand, where the war is so close and recent…

What are the benefits to the US Electoral College system?

So I’m a New Zealander and I have a pretty good idea on how the electoral college system works but it honestly sounds like something that can be easily corrupted and it feels like it renders the popular vote absolutely useless unless I’m totally missing something obvious?...

May be simple geography? IIRC the largest buyers of the grain are African countries, so departing port in the Baltic versus the Mediterranean would probably add significantly to time and cost.

At my school, we quickly discovered that the admin password for all the networked printers was the name of the high school. All these HP laser jets had a function where you could upload custom translations for the status messages on the printer displays. So we downloaded the English string set (XML) and made some changes, “translating” for example, “Printer Ready” to read “Paper Jam”, “Replace Toner” and so on. As well as changing the admin password. The school actually RMA’d them back to HP thinking the paper jams were some sort of actual defect, as opposed to an altered status message, and eventually replaced them all with Brother printers. Oops lol
