scrubbles, to technology in Do You Think There Would Have Been a Large Protest if Steve Huffman Just Said We're Charging to Use the API to Increase Revenue?
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I haven't heard anyone say that they're upset because Reddit needed money. Actually I've heard more understanding people, they wanted Reddit to stay alive and were willing to possibly say yes to subscriptions/ad based content.

But spez completely shit the bed on the entire thing. Giving them the crazy high prices, the incredibly short deadline, hiding the pricing for those 2 months, then trying to blame it on AI, and just everything. Yes, if they had a level headed leader at the front of their corporation I could very well see myself preparing to pay a couple bucks a month to Reddit to get a good experience, they could get their "Residual Income".

Instead he had to go all megalomaniac and demand everyone bend to his will - and I left permanently.

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Getting friends to leave facebook messenger for discord 8 years ago already, never underestimate how much the average person can ignore. For the time being I'm on discord, but if they start cracking down on small servers I'll be spinning up alternatives overnight

We're at the stage where owning media is a news-worthy concept. (and no, iTunes is not owning your media either, it's licensed, but how crazy would the headlines be if she bought physical media)

scrubbles, to feminism in No, Taylor Swift's Latest Video Isn't Fatphobic
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Hot take but I really hated that she took it down. I don’t know how a woman who opened up about her self consciousness and her anxiety about her own body could be called fatphobic. I think it said more about the people who cried out so loudly against her than it did Taylor.

PS, Swifties we are over here at !taylorswift, come and join us!

scrubbles, to technology in Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators From Subreddits Continuing Apollo-Related Blackouts
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

get ready for sudden and radical rule changes, non enforcement of rules, nsfw, bots, spam, all kinds of fun crazy shit in the subs with mods removed. I’m sure a percentage of subs would stay the same, but I don’t think that percentage is very high.

Reddit has been going through some issues for many on Monday, with the outage happening the same day as thousands of subreddits going dark to protest the site’s new API pricing terms.

According to Reddit, the blackout is responsible for the problems. “A significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue,” spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt tells The Verge.

scrubbles, to technology in Reddit CEO: We’re sticking with API change, despite subreddits going dark
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

What a shitty job at astroturphing there.

"Won’t someone think of the corporations! The evil third party apps (that we admitted were less than 10% of our userbase) are (somehow) bankrupting us! They’re using so much API (even though our website uses at least 5x the API calls)

[Translation: There’s 10% of the people we could shove ads in front of who are getting around it and I want to sell this sucker so I can buy another vacation property]

scrubbles, to asklemmy in How has ur lemmy experience been so far?
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Lol way to put it in perspective, I know maybe 2 politicians in all of Europe. Idk when, Reddit used to be global but it’s gotten incredibly America-focused, and maybe that’s just with the size but holy crap is it annoying now - and I’m American. I get bombarded with politics daily, can’t I just have a place that’s just memes?

scrubbles, to asklemmy in How has ur lemmy experience been so far?
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

It really feels like how Reddit started, before all the rage-bait and eye-catching bullshit. I miss the floofs, the memes, the fun reasons I joined. Now 90% is politics that keep popping up even though I don’t subscribe to any political subs and keep blocking

scrubbles, to asklemmy in What niche reddit community do you want to see find a place on the fediverse?
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

It’d be great to have an actual place that isn’t just Christians screaming that LGTBQ+ people are of the devil and need to burn, and at the same time not have edgelord atheists decrying that they have figured out everything and are smarter than everyone else

scrubbles, to gaming in Star Wars: The Old Republic Going Third-Party as BioWare Focuses on Mass Effect and Dragon Age
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This might be a good thing all around. Bioware needs to focus on DA and ME, they need love and attention to not have another ME:A or Anthem.

In addition 3rd party studios are usually trying hard to prove themselves, depending on the relationship it could end up great. Fallout:NV of course is a great example of a studio handing IP over to a third party.

Then there’s Grove Street Games, so who knows

scrubbles, to opensource in Reddit has permanently suspended my account for supporting Lemmy.
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

They’ve done an amazing job at burning their community. They think 3rd party apps are only used by super nerds (or at least many of the people I’ve talked to do), but I think they forgot who provides most of the content.

Well, bots now, but good content usually came from the super nerds
