Marketing Company Claims That It Actually Is Listening to Your Phone and Smart Speakers to Target Ads (www.404media.co)

A marketing team within media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) claims it has the capability to listen to ambient conversations of consumers through embedded microphones in smartphones, smart TVs, and other devices to gather data and use it to target ads, according to a review of CMG marketing materials by 404 Media and details from a...

peregus,

How can they technically do that? They would need their own app because Android by itself isn’t listening (it does while using voice command). And why would they say they can while it’s against the law to do it (at least in Europe, but I guess in the USA too).

peregus,

And Google says:

About this voice and audio activity setting

When you speak to Google services, Google uses its audio recognition technologies to process your audio and respond to you. For example, if you touch the mic icon to search by voice, Google’s audio recognition technologies translate what you say into words and phrases that Search looks up in an index to give you the most relevant results.

Web & App Activity saves things you do on Google sites, apps, and services in your Google Account on Google servers and can include associated info like location. Certain interactions may not be saved.

This optional voice and audio activity setting lets you also save audio recordings with Web & App Activity when you interact with Google Search, Assistant, and Maps. This setting is off unless you choose to turn it on

peregus,

Well, “actually listening to your phone” is a very strong statement (which I think it’s false) and completely different from what you’ve reported. This sounds to me to a very big fake news!

peregus,

Haha, well spotted!!! So this is a fuc…ing fake news…

peregus,

I run it on a Fujitsu Futro S720 thin client (bought for 40€ on ebay) with a VLAN aware switch. I know the Futro is not available in the US, but there is an HP thin client similar to it.

peregus,

Or install the open source app AdAway that I guess goes over the DNS block of some servers.

peregus,

Why not? There are a lot of things that can help people to give less data to Google: ad blocker, Firefox, Firefox with Google container, avoid using Gmail, avoid using YouTube…

peregus, (edited )

Apart from the Firefox Google container (that’s available only on PC), all the rest can be achieve everywhere.

Edit: I use Android, I just suppose that an AdBlocker can be used on iOS.

peregus,

But let’s be practical: if I use th Firefox Google container and all the link I open are just the website I want ro visit, if I’m not logged in any Google service, how can Google monitor me on my PC?

P.s. I also use (along with other) the Cookie Auto Delete plugin.

Quick question about DNS and DoH that I thought about after reading this post:

https://packmates.org/@[email protected]/111176886781705659

Wouldn't it make sense for Firefox or another third party to bundle and transparently forward all DoH requests to cloudflare so that:

A) Cloudflare doesn't know who made what request due to not knowing the origin

B) Firefox doesn't know who made what request due to TLS

peregus,

The TTL nowadays is about 3600 seconds, so I think that at about that rate your DNS server would flush stored entries every hour one by one and ask to 9.9.9.9 an update. That’s basically how every DNS server works (and I guess that even the ones embedded in router’s works like that with caching). Is your setup different? If yes, in which way? Thanks

peregus,

I guess it’s pretty normal: the once that self host don’t like walled gardens!

peregus,

I wish I could avoid docker, but many projects don’t even come with bare metal installations anymore :(

If I may ask; why?

peregus,

What is a self-hosted browsing solution?

peregus,

I’d go this route directly on OPNsense.

peregus,

But…he said that it’s not as cheap as it used to be and too power hungry and you propose an 150$ PC?

peregus,

They don’t have Ethernet port :( Do they support full OS?

peregus,

Well, yes if you need “all the add-ons”.

peregus,

I meant IF you need all the add-ons, otherwise the price gap is huge

peregus,

You’re right, if there’s no need of GPIO. For example I’m using a Fujitsu Futro S720 that I’ve bought for about 30/40€ and it consumes about 4W idle and 10/15W maximum (I don’t really remember). My point of view is like yours: those boards are not good for self hosting, are good for IoT, digital signage and…mmm…I don’t know what else.

peregus,

That seems to me to be a bank and not an alternative to Apple/Google Pay, let alone open source. Or am I wrong?

Need some help. Duckdns reverse proxy doesn't seem to be working.

I’m setting up a jellyfin server, and want to access it on the internet. I created a xxxxxxx.duckdns.org address for it. I have installed caddy with duckdns addon (first installed regular caddy, then overwrote /usr/bin/caddy with this custom caddy). My caddy file is as follows...

peregus,

Not a solution to your actual problem, but a different way: have you tried using CloudFlare Zero Trust tunnel? With that you don’t need any port forwarding or dynamic DNS and you get some extra protection. You can even add a login with your Google/Microsoft account, without getting to your devices first.

peregus,

Yes, you’re right

Linux Workspace for Browser

Hello, im searching for a Workspace for a Webbrowser. I want to Connect to a GUI Like Interface where i can run Linux Software. I allready tried kasm. This was not bad but i want the full Desktop experience. Then i installed Guacamole under cloudron this was also OK but a bit slower. Would be cool if you could list me a few more...

peregus,

I use Mesh central, maybe an overkill for what you need, but…have a look at it.

peregus,

I think that the best place to ask is the developer GitHub page. Try opening an issue there.

peregus,

You actually could. I use GPSLogger (on Android) that can logs directly to Nextcloud. With Tasker (with intent) that automatically enables GPS logging when the smartphone is not connected to any WiFi network.

peregus,

I’m reality? Nothing! 😆 Sometimes I like to know where I was a certain day or a lot of time I forget to start GPS tracking when I hike and this helps me.

peregus,

Does anybody have suggestions for an online service that prints things like business cards, brochures, and pamphlets?

But…if it’s a service, how can it be FOSS?

peregus,

The service may use a FOSS software, but the service itself can’t be FOSS!

peregus,

Sorry, it seems that I didn’t get the “friendly” part.

peregus,

This?

  1. Remote Network Interaction; Use with the GNU General Public License.

Notwithstanding any other provision of this License, if you modify the Program, your modified version must prominently offer all users interacting with it remotely through a computer network (if your version supports such interaction) an opportunity to receive the Corresponding Source of your version by providing access to the Corresponding Source from a network server at no charge, through some standard or customary means of facilitating copying of software. This Corresponding Source shall include the Corresponding Source for any work covered by version 3 of the GNU General Public License that is incorporated pursuant to the following paragraph.

Notwithstanding any other provision of this License, you have permission to link or combine any covered work with a work licensed under version 3 of the GNU General Public License into a single combined work, and to convey the resulting work. The terms of this License will continue to apply to the part which is the covered work, but the work with which it is combined will remain governed by version 3 of the GNU General Public License.

peregus,

You can’t read just pieces of it.

A service can’t be FOSS for definition since it’s missing the last “S” Software! …at least for my knowledge! 🤷🏻‍♂️

peregus,

A company can use an AGPL software, but the company itself can’t be AGPL. AGPL is a license for software (for my knowledge), so it can’t be associated to a company or a service. A company could be “FOSS friendly” as the OP mentioned, but not FOSS.

  • peregus,

That happens for open source as well as for anything else. Why there are not thousand of “Gmail” like services? Or Dropbox, Slack, Trello and so on? Because there’s who’s good in selling his product and raising funds and…who’s not!

    peregus,

I’ve never heard about Ecosia, what is the good cause?

    peregus,

Exactly. I had to stop using it because for the number of searches I had to switch to the $25/month! Way too much for me!

    peregus,

Isn’t it just enough to use Google with Firefox in a Google container (and uBlockOrigin and Canvas locker)? In this way no search can be tied up to me.

P.s. I also have the plugin Google search link fix, but I’m not sure it’s needed with the Google container

    peregus,

What does self hosting have to do with smartphone OSs? It seems to me that OP is talking about OSs, not the services Apple and Google offers.

    peregus,

Well, it’s not try that there’s little you can do about it, there’s a lot we can do: STOP USING THOSE SERVICES!

    peregus, (edited )

Piospartslab on Ebay. Before buying, try to make an offer, offen they approve them and you can get very good bargains! For a Pi upgrade those Fujitsu Futro (S720/S920) are very good, I’ve started using them in the lasts months and I love them.

What open source programs do you recommend for Windows? (Windows exclusive or not)

I am and all my life have been a Linux user, I have nothing against Windows or MacOS, I just like Linux, and lately I have been experimenting with Windows in a virtual machine and I don’t really know much open source software there apart from the one that is cross-platform like Firefox or Joplin....

    peregus,

Notepad2e: A lightweight and portable alternative to Notepad++ Nice! Why do you prefer it at Notepad++?

    peregus,

I like your point of view! Thanks!

Is this email compartmentalization idea bad?

So, let’s say you created a ProtonMail account entirely on your Tor Browser through the Tor mirror the entire time and then also signed up to SimpleLogin/AnonAddy to have an e-mail alias/cloak for each account that you have (for example, say you have make an Reddit account and you go and create an alias for the Reddit account...

    peregus,

I do the same for the same reasons!

    peregus,

Let’s hope so, but up to now I haven’t heard anything about car privacy and GDPR/DMA/DSA

Amount of RJ45 Ports on Home Server?

I’m in the process of designing a home server and am curious how many ethernet ports are required at minimum and how many people recommend. The single board computer (SBC) I plan to use has two built in and has a pcie slot to add four more if necessary. If I don’t need the four extra I’d like to use the pcie slot for a...

    peregus,

I would segregate the CCTV stuff on a separate VLAN since most likely it will be available from Internet. Since you are planning to use frigate and not connect directly to each single camera, place a firewall rule that block Internet access to them (or at least don’t add the gateway).

    peregus,

PairDrop Is a very nice alternative to AirDrop and it works even on different network!

    peregus,

Have a look at PairDrop that works even across different networks.
