@i_have_no_enemies I wasn't very popular at the dinner party where I suggested this, but my hunch: removing People from positions of authority, where we repeatedly see aspects of greed/corruption/nepotism furthering systems that benefit that person in power at the cost of the masses, may be key. Its apparent that it is nigh impossible to put a human in charge where they will always choose to benefit the masses over themselves.

musicmind333,

@i_have_no_enemies Possible Alternatives? I suggest something like an AI government, or at least something based on statistical models and systems developed from social science research. Something data driven, or rather, data that is derived from the population as a whole, rather than a single individual who only has had a single, particular view of the human experience and can only truly understand and relate to other humans with similar experiences. In essence, the masses govern the masses.

musicmind333,

@i_have_no_enemies I don't blame people for having an inherent aversion to being governed by what is essentially a computer program (hello Matrix and every other robot-run dystopia).
Maybe maintain a Leader Panel of people from different ethnicities, backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, etc who can bring a unique perspective to the table, to vote on or dictate which policies or systems actually get put in place? But, again, introduces the problem of people voting for their own personal gain 🤷‍♀️

musicmind333,

@ElderWendigo @MiraLazine agree to disagree, a lot of those things I was definitely taught - if not in school then at least by adults who thought it common knowledge. Especially the nosebleeds (I had them all the time as a kid, and the amount of blood I ended up swallowing is..... A lot.) and knuckle cracking (my guess - started by teachers annoyed by kids making knuckle-noises during class)
Christopher columbus was definitely taught as an "American hero" up until he wasn't.

musicmind333,

@MiraLazine love this!! any chance you can add a submission box? (With a section for source cited ofc :p). I'm sure there's a bunch out there that people might think of and want to add.

musicmind333,

@MiraLazine also there's the possibility -- you may be at risk of getting flooded with submissions :p

musicmind333,

@pexavc A manager at my workplace reprimanded an employee for making decisions outside of their role/overstepping boundaries, during which the manager threw in the "because I'm your manager and you
need to respect my authority".
To me, this immediately makes the person in charge not worthy of respect - if a misstep occurred, there should be an explanation as to why it was a problem, how to improve and handle similar cases in the future. Demanding respect just proves you don't deserve it.

musicmind333,

@OceanSoap @MisterHavoc so unfortunate as I feel like onions are one of the few nearly-universal components of food culture.

Wheat you can get away from in Asian countries where rice or other grains predominate
Same with dairy and most vegetables. Even meat isn't as ubiquitous, and you can always choose your species (chicken v pork v beef v fish etc).

Now you got me wondering where onions originated.... 🤔

musicmind333,

@Sterile_Technique @PunnyName in some dystopian future where cilantro has gone extinct, stinkbugs get crushed up and dyed green as fake cilantro powder, much like horseradish pretends to be wasabi...... What a dark place that must be

musicmind333,

@Melkath @MisterHavoc hard cottage cheese 🫣

musicmind333,

@eyy @MisterHavoc as someone who might be mistaken as being active, I loathe running and wish I didn't. Every other exercise (most of which I love) is just less convenient. Biking, swimming, hiking, sports - all require extra steps (equipment or environment or other people). If I liked running even a little more it would be so practical to just throw on shoes and go whenever.

But the moment my legs are pumping and my lungs are aching there's nothing to distract me from feeling like I'm DYING.

musicmind333,

@Presi300 @MisterHavoc it's tough - I find that I dislike exercising just for the sake of exercising. Going on a bike ride or hike feels like exploring, seeing nice scenery. Playing sports is FUN, and the objective is to get the goal/do the thing, not make pain in body to make it healthier.

For me the key was to find something I liked doing where being active was a side effect. (Like someone mentioned, gardening! I hadn't thought of that one)

musicmind333,

@trashgirlfriend @schmorpel noob question, how do you include the previous comment in your response text?

musicmind333,

@Geek_King @MisterHavoc ironically, I feel like I form half my personality on being one of the few people who Don't drink coffee.

Own it! 😜 We're better than them! We don't need any weird brown bean water to become functioning human beings, much less be elitists about it. Psshht losers /s.

Jk y'all bean juice lovers are an alright bunch, I guess...

Enjoy what you enjoy, and enjoy that you enjoy it. Doesn't matter what other people like

musicmind333,

@Phogger @MisterHavoc what is it about them? The texture? Skin? Level of liquid? Flavor profile?

musicmind333,

@Phogger interesting 🤔 the inner scientist in me wants to sit you down in front of a variety of tomato types and prepared different ways to nail down exactly what about them makes you dislike them but be ok with when they're in something else haha. Though I imagine this would not be as fun for you.

So they're ok in like ketchup or paste or sauce but not whole? What's your take on them in sandwiches? Or sprinkled with sugar? Or chunky sauce?

musicmind333,

@Infernal_pizza !?! What about red food coloring? Is it made from bugs too???

musicmind333,

@Phogger Hah I find that kinda funny - that there's a precise chunky to saucy ratio that must be achieved for not-too-tomato-ish sauce 🍅 😋

My mom used to slice up tomatoes and do the sugar sprinkle as a quick summertime snack. Pretty refreshing and, at least to me, changes the flavor profile of the tomatoes. Maybe you'll like it 🤷

@trashgirlfriend
>Oh!!!!
Wait but how did you do the > without the quote?
> Add a space?
Hmmmm

musicmind333,

@room_raccoon @MisterHavoc @Geek_King caffeine or no, to me tea is meant to be drunk like, in the evening curled up on a couch reading a book. There's just something very soul-warming about tea:)

musicmind333,

@Sterile_Technique more protein! 😎😏

musicmind333,

@room_raccoon @MisterHavoc @Geek_King summer tea is a realm I haven't broken into yet. Iced tea on the other hand 👀

musicmind333,

@Infernal_pizza 😳 #TIL bugs called cochineal are almost 1/4 carminic acid! The main component used in red dye. That's nuts!

musicmind333,

@trashgirlfriend

>Hello
>hello
whoa
👌👌👌thanks for the tip!
Is there like a list of all the secret formatting stuff that's available?

musicmind333,

@Moobythegoldensock @ericbomb that's amazing!!! I hope you keep it up :) starting a new habit like that and keeping it consistent ain't easy - glad you're nailing it so far.

musicmind333,

@UsernameLost @ericbomb glad you were able to push past the doubts and treat yourself. Hopefully all the cool projects that come out of it will prove it's worth even more for you :) (and don't chop your finger off pls)

musicmind333,

@Tini @Stoney_Logica1 wait is that how that works? If you get first you stay in diamond?

musicmind333,

@BeepStreet this is the kind of insider mechanics I need to know lol
So many times I accidentally joined the super hardcore leagues bc I had waited until the last minute to do the last lesson of the week like the slacker I am, then got sucked into doing a bunch to try and rank up, and kept doing lessons as the week rolled over, thus putting me in with the people who started the new week right away. Now I know....

musicmind333,

@UsernameLost oooooohhh quality buy!! I love the videos of the mechanism engaging (like in this one https://youtu.be/SYLAi4jwXcs?feature=shared) where the aluminum hops up and crumples into the saw.... Even to the extent where the momentum is stopped so suddenly where the teeth of the blade just fly off .... So gnarly.

musicmind333,

@UsernameLost as attached to fingers as they are to you id say :p

I've only recently got into using power tools and the like and am still impressed by the sheer, well, power they have.
I used a miter saw for the first time a few weeks ago. The SPEED at which that thing can seemingly melt it's way through wood or aluminum like it's butter is impressive.

musicmind333,

@UsernameLost aiiyeeeee exploding wood does not sound like a good time. Or losing skin 🙃
The worst I've had so far is a splinter or some chafed skin. 👀🤞

musicmind333,

@Withers_Larue @ericbomb if it was your first ever you definitely deserved it. Here's hoping you had a bubble bath, hot soup, and a fun movie all at the same time.

musicmind333,

@notatoad @Moc some plant and mushroom types really thrive in post-fire environments. I wonder if there's any of them cropping up now

musicmind333,

@wesker @Lemmylefty I find this happening in phone call convos w friends at times. They'll tell me things that are going on in their lives that may not be 'ooh interesting' but that I enjoy hearing about/reflecting upon with them. But I don't always have feedback or insights or questions to ask etc, so as I'm thinking of something to say, the Convo veers off to some other topic, maybe with the impression given that I'm not interested, which is definitely not the intention

musicmind333,

@Zathras @Lemmylefty I do this too! I find myself interrupting people to finish their sentences at times, or assume I know what they're going to say and think/spit out a response to move the Convo along. After doing some internet research, I'm starting to wonder if it may be a symptom of undiagnosed ADHD or something 🤷 might be worth taking a look into and asking a professional

musicmind333,

@tictac2 as someone with sensitive teeth, seeing anyone take a BITE out of their ice cream instead of licking it. 🙈
@maksymize

musicmind333,

@Albbi @IronRain found out about Wheel of Time from Tumblr of all places. Started the audiobook series as something to accompany me on long drives or workouts but they keep being checked out at my library app lol. Was interesting to me that you could tell it was written a few decades ago - some of the writing seems a bit dated even though altogether it's a very well-structured series.

Also absolutely loved Red Rising, didn't realize there was a new addition!

musicmind333,

@beefbaby182 did an audiobook of The Red Queen (Juan Gómez-Jurado) which was a fun murder mystery. At the end it had an interview between the author and narrator (Scott Brick), which led me to Bricks other narrations (he's got a wonderful voice and believable accents) - The Omega Factor (Steve Berry) was next. Hoping it will keep leading me on these novels set in other countries - pretty cool to get a taste of cultures alongside a good story

What is your cleaning pet peeve?

I’ve realized I am really bothered by passive voice in cleaning with people I live with. “I am going to do the dishes tonight” - great “Eric, would you take out the trash tonight please?” - that’s fine! I probably would have taken it out if I had realized it was full. I’m an adult and this is my house, I try to...

musicmind333,

@ericbomb had roommates in college to whom mopping was just rearranging dirt on the floor.

Step 1. Get the mop wet in the bucket
Step 2. Mop the entire first floor
Step 3. Move to the next floor

No rinsing, no emptying/refilling the bucket (because hey, it never got dirty!). All grime just got wiped up, and moved around to the kitchen, living room, entryway, hallways etc. God forbid we had a party and beer got spilled in the basement. I'd be smelling it upstairs by the bedroom for weeks.

musicmind333,

@ericbomb they didn't 🙃🥲

Honors college students, too. I have a few stories like this from my time living with them that still bring a 🙃🥲 to my face lol

musicmind333,

@FlyingSquid @walnutwalrus I think my tech time period is way off, but this reminded me of a vid I stumbled across with Wendy Carlos talking about their synthesized orchestra instruments. Would be interesting to hear what pre-40s sound tech could produce with the influence of today's music tastes, styles, techniques etc.

musicmind333,

@OsakaWilson @Ace_of_spades I think this is probably the way to go. If you inquire directly, they can easily find out who is calling and what your relationship to that area is. If a bunch of random internet snoopers start raising red flags, there might not be a whole lot that they can do against general public inquiry. (They being the people who own the land, and the organized crime, including, it sounds like, the local police and politicians as well)

musicmind333,

@ecoboy if you're into some educational vids on semi-serious but delivered in a humorous way,
ClimateTown is right there (https://youtube.com/@ClimateTown)

Sort of in the same vein is NotJustBikes, who has really great insight on subpar American infrastructure compared to other developed countries.
