I try to be very positive and cheerful about my profession: teaching. It's a fluffing tough job and you have to see the best in it - every lesson, every day, every student. And it can be the most rewarding and important job a person could do. But, my goodness, today was a challenge. When your leaders don't seem to care about their staff and are actively making it more difficult for you, you just get worn down. But. Tomorrow is a new day. Always. @edutooters

@hlseward @edutooters Hi, Helen. My goodness, there is a lot going on in the world. Then I realized these bad things have always been happening throughout history.I find comfort in ideas like the ones expressed in this blog entry- https://medium.com/stoicism-philosophy-as-a-way-of-life/how-to-think-like-a-stoic-learn-like-a-stoic-live-like-a-stoic-11ecff67b534

@hlseward @edutooters Perhaps the most important idea is the one about Dichotomy of Control.

Ivan, I don't disagree. What's more, it's clear from evidence that learners have to DO something with new information to make it their own. That's why evidence-based strategies are so effective, even without technology. @illumniscate @edutooters https://www.mglead.org/ebs/ebs-strategies

Anyone have horror stories of unencrypted data falling into the wrong hands in K-12 education/schools? Real life stories with names changed to protect identities.

I am compiling scenarios for a "How To Protect Your Sensitive Data" for technology professionals, network engineer, cybersecurity staff, leaders/admins in education. I will share resulting creation.

Thanks in advance! Please boost to reach larger audience.

Is there like, a teacher BBS or something?

10 years ago, teacher Twitter was extremely helpful to me. There's the hashtag here, which is nice, but are most people still on X? Or worse, Facebook?

Trying to build that side of my timeline back up. Boots appreciated along with recommendations of who to follow.

@brianb @NewScience101 @edutooters Hi, Brian. Search on hashtags like and add those when relevant to your posts. I try to follow only education or educator accounts. I will share my following list later with you and you can import them so you can get going with more edu folks. That said, it is sparse here…and different. I find value every day.

mguhlin,

@brianb @NewScience101 @edutooters Facebook has some amazing groups relevant to science, etc. they are more focused. Are you a member? We have free membership drive in October and that would give you access to TCEA Community which has over 80k educators via Mobilize.io community. Learn more at https://tcea.org

Steve, great contributions. I'm curious to see more about your "summary, reflection, and response papers." Have an exemplar or just a plain old copy to share?

In regards to your thought-provoking question, I wonder. Learning, doing the work of thinking and using our minds, always comes down to a choice. The teacher can't make that choice for the pupils. They must. We invite students to do the work that leads to that moment... @SteveMcCarty @Bilingualism @edutooter @linguistics

We invite learners to that moment of learning and work that involves them convincing themselves that the effort is worth the result.

I reflected on some of this here https://www.mguhlin.org/2023/08/the-ai-angle-in-education-make-money.html and there's a great article (or two) that the focus must be on Critical Thinking. I also found this article fascinating - https://slate.com/technology/2023/08/chatgpt-vs-algorithms-class.html

according to Florida history books, Freeman went on to build a successful career as a waiter in Washington area restaurants. Reports of his unsuccessful bid as a restaurateur have not yet found their way into the records consulted by Florida legislators. 😞 @JMMontpelier @academicchatter
