merthyr1831,

jesus fucking christ lmao why on earth did they not think to remove their super racist code before open sourcing it.

“oh yeah make sure racist dave’s commits are checked before we upload to github”

(edit: wait what projects are these? couldnt find em on datalens dir)

merthyr1831,

Okay so maybe they did get racist dave to check through his old commits then

merthyr1831,

If they mix up the layout you’re forced to look at more products instead of automatically going to the places you expect a product to be. It’s a marketing tactic.

There’s more reasons than that but if it’s definitely one of the bigger reasons a small stock change can trigger a total mix up of the whole aisle.

merthyr1831,

For the USSRs faults I wouldn’t bet on older people hating their time under it. They did their complaining about the Soviet system in the few years before it got replaced with half a dozen oligarchies.

Also Love how this meme is a prime example of misogyny in how I remember the original meme not mentioning the gender of the teenager, but now since Girls = stupid idealists someone rewrote the caption to explicitly mention the communist being female (so we know that communism = stupid too)

merthyr1831,

It might be bad practice to dump 1.3GB of variable user data into the registry, though. Especially when there’s SQL servers and Nuget packages that can deal with that kind of data in a platform-agnostic way.

merthyr1831,

Seems like horrible dev practice to place save data of any kind in the Windows registry lmao. I get that it’s designed for storing user data in some respects but the registry is an old and fickle solution to setting global variables important for communication between processes and applications.

If you’re storing data that’s only ever needed by your own application, especially if it isn’t OS-related, you shouldn’t mess with the registry. Not only does it not have the performance you’d expect for most circumstances, but the registry has a real performance and stability impact even when outside of your app.

What’s worse, imo, is that this data is difficult to access for making backups, utilising cloud synchronization, and cross compatibility of your app.

Unity is a lot more borked than I thought, but KSP devs should probably be careful with what data serialisation APIs they mess with.

merthyr1831,

They’re just copying Elon. To that end, the already clickbait-filled front page is gonna get worse and engagement farming is going to become as rife as ever.

It’s a desperate and cynical attempt to claw back users who appear to have left en masse after the API changes. Reddit is noticeably less active in smaller subs since July. And the larger subs have more or less consolidated themselves to a few power users.

merthyr1831,

ROI is likely lower than Steam market trading but could be an easy way to diversify your portfolio

Alternative ways to run Plex?

Context; So… Just bought a brand new TV and life is good, but I should have done more research before buying it. I primarily want to use PLEX for watching media on the TV. However, due to “smart TV’s” not being smart and being rather slow because most current TV operating systems are either bloated or just riddled with...

merthyr1831,

Rokus are cheap. So are Chromecasts. We have the same issue with our TV.

Hell, even an old laptop can be loaded up with Linux for a set top box experience via Kodi or Plex directly. You can use Kdeconnect to turn your phone into a mouse/keyboard input over your wifi.

merthyr1831,

Nextcloud? there’s a bunch of private hosts you can sign up for, and some even do free plans which might be good for getting started. The first one I found (alfacloud) did 100gb for €5/month.

merthyr1831,

Merkava IIIB in wargame red dragon, that or the SU-27M. nightmare fuel

merthyr1831,

They literally cannot enforce this, just like their attempted ban on porn

merthyr1831,

There’s usually some kind of integration between the DE and the underlying system that isn’t replicated by installing the DE without a bunch of configuration. But yeah, the line is definitely blurred nowadays.

merthyr1831,

Did they read their own article? because I did and it seems to be “within margin or error” or “measurably a tiny bit worse”, apart from CSGO (which suggests a testing error if anything).

TLDR Clickbait.

merthyr1831,

So the best server CPUs* just got even better. God damn

  • I mean this is relative nowadays
merthyr1831,

Are they the most privacy respecting? no.

are they privacy respecting ENOUGH? sure

merthyr1831,

The BSD argument (that I don’t necessarily agree with) is that a less permissive license would encourage companies to use a different solution or build their own. I suppose this at least guarantees them a few $1000 a year depending on apple employee donations.

merthyr1831,

I mean, Linux is much less permissive to the Apple/Sony strategy of forking BSD and closing the source, and it’s way more popular in every industry

merthyr1831,

Easy steamdeck killer checklist:

✅ SteamOS/ChimeraOS ✅ Trackpads ✅ 800p at most ✅ AMD Z1 ✅ Within $300US of deck’s upper price point

Literally just need all 5 and you’ll easily slip into the steamdeck market instead of “handhold windows handheld” market

merthyr1831,

For SteamOS this would manifest as seamless transitions between gamescope and desktop mode, which atm needs you to log out of one session to log into the other.

Linux can be used at your workplaces (lemmy.ml)

I’m just tired. On the last post about having Linux at our work, many people that seems to be an IT worker said there have been several issues with Linux that was not easy to manipulate or control like they do with Windows, but I think they just are lazy to find out ways to provide this support. Because Google forces all their...

merthyr1831,

Yeah for a “red hat certified engineer” that seems like a weird hyperbole to die on

merthyr1831,

Paladins is a pain for this. Game runs fine on proton, and all it needs is some work with EAC to enable linux on multiplayer but despite all the requests they’ve yet to bother.

merthyr1831,

Yeah as long as proton works fine I’d rather use that over a buggy port. Usually works better for the devs too since they can target one API and binary and just debug whatever makes proton poop itself afterwards.

merthyr1831,

Weird. stray ran great on my deck out of the box via proton. Glad you got to play it though!

merthyr1831,

Halo MCC devs complained the port to EAC is harder than Valve claimed but even they went to the effort to enable it.

I have no idea what could hold up other devs to do the same.

merthyr1831,

It was a pretty fun game to play on the Switch ngl. Might just give in and play overwatch tho

*Finally* found a decently priced laptop using AMD's 780m iGPU | Lenovo UK Laptop configurator (www.lenovo.com)

The worst part of using a gaming laptop on Linux is that, despite the great work of open source developers and hobbyists, it’s still way too clunky to use a hybrid graphics setup imo. Once you want to use an interface that’s only connected to one GPU (such as HDMI) you’re left messing with switching utilities like...

merthyr1831,

And how about hardware outputs ie. HDMI ports? My Nitro 5 (4600H + 1650ti-M) refuses to output to HDMI unless I manually set the dGPU to always-on rather than the usual distro default of PRIME offloading.

merthyr1831,

Exactly why I like Lenovo. It’s rare for a new laptop to have the option to remove Windows, let alone save you some money for the lack of license.

But yes, if you get the 7840HS (just about offsets the windows license) you get a GPU that’s best in class for integrated graphics and easily beats some of the most popular dedicated alternatives the nvidia 1600 series.

merthyr1831,

Apple and Microsoft are probably the only companies doing relatively consistent naming of their laptops. trying to find my model of laptop online is an absolute nightmare

merthyr1831,

Same if not better performance than the 1650Ti-mobile while being an integrated GPU solution. The 1600 mobile series are, as far as I know, the most common laptop graphics cards in use. Kind of like what the 1060Ti was for desktop for a few years.

For the most part it’s not really that interesting, but handheld systems and mini PCs have become much more viable for AAA gaming with this generation of iGPU.

merthyr1831,

I might have written it weirdly but thats what I meant :)

merthyr1831,

appreciate the update!

merthyr1831,

I find lemmy is more active in smaller communities compared to reddit, where any sub less than 500 subs feels dead. On Lemmy a similar sized community is bustling.

merthyr1831,

Dont think BSD is ever going to be a Linux competitor, it’s not meant to be honestly. But there’s always space for a lightweight and fast general purpose OS that can (among other things) boot up really quickly.

Linux 6.6 To Better Protect Against The Illicit Behavior Of NVIDIA's Proprietary Driver (www.phoronix.com)

Luis Chamberlain sent out the modules changes today for the Linux 6.6 merge window. Most notable with the modules update is a change that better builds up the defenses against NVIDIA’s proprietary kernel driver from using GPL-only symbols. Or in other words, bits that only true open-source drivers should be utilizing and not...

merthyr1831,

Intentionally pushing changes that could brick a bunch of systems over legal complaints is imo reckless.

This should be a last resort move. Has the Linux foundation started chasing nVidia over this? because it sounds like this is coming out of nowhere.

merthyr1831,

lucky 😮‍💨 all mine are weight loss scams and laptop deals

merthyr1831,

RIP AND TEAR UNTIL IT IS DONE

merthyr1831,

i know nvidia claims their recent open source initiatives aren’t related to the Lapsus hack they had a while back, but they could do with making their repos look a little less like they’ve been dumped from a data breach.

merthyr1831,

doubt it would hurt the drive’s lifespan to a noticeable extent. swap partitions have been used for decades on much more fickle hardware.

I’d still only recommend them for systems with under 16GB of RAM (especially if that’s shared with VRAM like a steamdeck) but otherwise it doesn’t have much benefit.

PS: Even if a swap partition is set up, it won’t necessarily be used until memory pages are evicted into swap, which usually only happens when regular RAM is nearly depleted.

merthyr1831,

Humble Bundle does pretty much that from what I can tell. Surprised more games don’t come to the humble store

merthyr1831,

start using linux lmao

merthyr1831,

I’m right though.

No amount of registry editing and weird app installing will permanently remove the obnoxious ads from Windows. And Linux is the only OS that can feel like Windows. (Zorin, Mint, any old KDE distro etc)

And honestly? Linux isn’t that hard anymore. Like, installing stuff can be done through graphical app stores that are easier than using Windows. Gaming on Linux works out of the box and has done for 5 years now.

This post is more like an apple user asking why their phone screen can’t be replaced without buying a new device, or a ford f150 owner asking how to get more than 5mpg in fuel economy: you tell them to (consider) a different choice of product

merthyr1831,

Beyond the complaints about Canonical’s hostility to Flatpak and other formats, but the real risk snap poses is that Canonical has a lot of control over the snap store, and lack of integration with distros beyond Ubuntu.

There’s a vague promise of “new stores” and better integration with other distros but Flatpak is a truly open technology that gives you the option to install apps from ANY source and other distros are collaborating to improve it.

merthyr1831,

Steam input is your best bet. It has a desktop configuration thats loaded when not playing games and usually autoconfigures the joystick to act as a mouse

merthyr1831,

The games run fine.

Gamepad support relies on the game but it’s v configurable on the deck. You’ll be able to play OpenTTD fine but games like 0AD are always gonna be better on mouse and keyboard.

Minetest is similar - You can configure really good fps controller configs using the steam input system.

You CAN use non-steam distros (it’s just a fancy single board computer after all) but you’ll have a worse time with support. Though The steam deck control drivers are in the linux kernel (and Valve has been very good with upstreaming as they use a bunch of linux contractors to develop SteamOS) so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. I’d recommend against it unless you were gonna use the deck for tinkering and stuff primarily.

merthyr1831,

The battlebit devs really did listen to the deck fans (that and realistically any anticheat takes ages to port to initially for a small team I bet so this was never an imminent change). Big up to Faceit for working on Linux support too

merthyr1831,

The battery on the deck is glued in so probably a fail, but even a simple hardware revision to install some brackets to lock the battery in place without glue would work i bet
