maporita, to worldnews in Ukraine expands conscription, removes medical exemptions for HIV, hepatitis, mental disorders and more

“Orwellian” is a term that gets thrown around a lot these days so one hesitates to use it, but when a country invades another sovereign state and then turns round and claims they didn’t start the war it really does sound like something the ministry of truth would say. To be clear. America started the war in Iraq (incidentally I marched in the street in protest). Russia started the war in Ukraine.

maporita, to worldnews in Ukraine expands conscription, removes medical exemptions for HIV, hepatitis, mental disorders and more

Ukraine was invaded by a tyrant. The people have suffered for over a year, children have been slaughtered or lost limbs, civilians entombed in rubble, and the armed forces have lost tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands defending their homeland.

Now I’m not a violent man but I have to admit, in the face of all these poor people have suffered, reading your glib comment does make me feel like punching something.

maporita, to coffee in Does black coffee taste slightly salty?

No. “Salty” is not a recognized coffee note in the same way that it wouldn’t be for wine.

Look for medium roast Arabica beans grown at an altitude at least 1500m (in general the higher the better) . You are generally fine with Colombian beans. Invest in a good (not blade) coffee grinder (you can get decent burr grinders for about 90 bucks). Grind only what you’re going to use immediately. Make sure the water is just a little off boiling. Brew in your favorite equipment (mine is French Press). Sip and enjoy. The difference between good coffee and the over roasted dreck they sell in Starbucks is night and day.

maporita, to asklemmy in What types of physical exercise do you enjoy the most?

I’m primarily a runner but I’ve been combining swimming for the last 10 years or so and it’s been great. Swimming is fantastic cross training for runners. It lets you maintain cardio fitness while you give your “running” muscles a break. It teaches good breathing techniques. It works other muscle groups like upper body and core muscles which are important for stability. And most of all, for me, my partner loves to swim so it’s something we can do together.

maporita, to technology in Watch a swarm of drones autonomously track a human through a dense forest

“In the future, write the scientists in a paper published in the journal Science Robotics, drone swarms like this could be used for disaster relief and ecological surveys.”.

Yeah sure, tell me another one

maporita, to news in Kremlin says Prigozhin plane may have been downed on purpose

The next step will be to blame Ukraine.

maporita, to fediverse in Political Compass of the Lemmyverse

Try unilem. They have an explicit policy of not defederating from any instance.

maporita, to news in The recession should probably be here by now

Unemployment is at the lowest rate for 30 years and wages are rising… that’s actually part of what’s driving inflation. Annualized growth this year is expected to hit an astonishing 6%. In July new orders for manufacturing hit their highest level in 9 months. Construction is doing well and consumer spending is way up. Nothing points even remotely to a recession.

maporita, to worldnews in Pentagon: No info to support missile strike theory for Prigozhin crash

I think a bomb is more likely for a couple of reasons. Firstly the breakup occurred around the tail section … that doesn’t square with a guided missile which normally targets the nose or engines. Second a bomb is much easier to conceal than a missile. I think the smoke in the video was from the explosion itself.

maporita, to news in Alabama can enforce ban on puberty blockers and hormones for transgender children, court says

Decisions such as these should be taken by medical professionals, not judges or politicians. Unfortunately in the US both parties are entrenched in their “we are right and they are wrong” mentally with little regard to what the actual data say.

Norway, Finland, Sweden and the UK all limit or restrict hormones and puberty blockers for children, and a growing number of European countries are considering doing the same until a thorough review of clinical data and outcomes can be made. But any mention of putting guardrails on these treatments here iin the US is branded as “transphobia”, even when those recommendations are made by experts in their respective fields.

maporita, to asklemmy in What is the biggest lesson that employment has taught you?

I was taught that my job is “to make sure all my bosses surprises are pleasant ones”. 15 years of working as an engineer and that never changed. Now I have my own business and that’s the thing I look for employees… someone I can leave on their own to do a job. It they have problems they can always ask me. If they screw up I expect them to tell me immediately and to have a plan of action to fix it and to prevent it happening again. And I never ever get cross if someone does come to me and say they screwed up. Far better that we tell the client about a problem than wait until the client finds the problem themselves.

Reading all these comments makes me realize how lucky I’ve been in my career. I’ve always had great bosses who defended me and backed me up.

maporita, to technology in Adobe Co-Founder Dr. John Warnock Passes at 82

He didn’t “pass”. He died. What is with the current refusal of so many to use a perfectly serviceable word?

maporita, to asklemmy in I've seen countless posts about the tankie problem here in the lemmyverse

Me too. I found unilem who’s policy is explicitly not to defederate from any instance. I prefer to be treated like an adult and allowed to decide for myself who I block.

maporita, to asklemmy in What is your all time favourite movie?

These are the movies I can always watch again.

  • Gladiator.
  • Casablanca.
  • In the Mood for Love.
  • Lord of the Rings.
  • Matrix (first one only).
  • Sin City.

If I’m on a plane scrolling to find a movie to watch and I see any of those I stop right there.
