manualoverride,

Aw man, why did you have to ruin it by being such a pessimist! An entirely accurate and correct pessimist.

manualoverride,

Ha - they wouldn’t do that! It’s not like Waze puts a full screen ad up every time you stop at a traffic light… oh, wait. Damn you capitalism!!!

manualoverride,

Well it could work really well… but capitalism will always be capitalism.

manualoverride,

You only need one to be cyborg eye… the other one can succumb the way nature intended… to diabetes and television.

manualoverride,

Initially I thought this was a “vacation-related” tips request, then I remembered Lemmy is mainly US English not UK English. You can buy a pyrography set, an engraving tool some sandpaper and the things needed for acid etching for less than $10 With a little practice you can make a cheap gift more personal by adding the recipients name or a message personal to you both on wood plastic, metal or glass. I used some vinegar, a q-tip, 9v battery, electrical tape, salt and copper wire to acid etching a hunting knife last year as a gift.

UK Government invests £225m to create UK’s most powerful AI supercomputer (www.hpe.com)

University of Bristol and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) have been awarded an investment to make the UK a world leader in AI with new Isambard-AI supercomputer. The new system will be UK’s most powerful supercomputer, with over 5,000 state-of-the-art NVIDIA GH200 superchips, capable of an incredible 200 quadrillion...

manualoverride,

Does everyone just forget that Hewlett Packard are Titanic-grade shitbergs. I wouldn’t trust them to help the UK government find Waldo! If there is ever a company guaranteed to create AI that will take over the world and enslave the human race, step aside Cyberdyne… it’s fucking HP here to cartridge-lock you into a human egg sac to feed our new AI overlords.

manualoverride,

I really thought they would wait a little longer after the Adblock crackdown. Oh well, Grayjay to the rescue!

manualoverride,

I kinda want to go down there with disc cutter and a new door. That is some prime location property.

manualoverride,

Writing this on an iPX which got its last update this week, 6 years old now but I’m just waiting for my banking apps to require iOS17. People will blame development costs for excluding older phones but there is no reason iPhones should not get iOS updates for 10+ years to save App developers the work.

manualoverride,

My dad still uses my iPhone6, still perfectly usable, admittedly that is a 9 year old phone but I’m not seeing anything making that one obsolete in the near future.

As you say modern phones are not progressing that fast any more, it’s time we made Apple and Google support OS updates for longer. Apple certainly charge app developers enough for the burden to be on them and not the 3rd parties.

In terms of kWh per kWh, by how much does greenhouse CO2 from running an air-conditioner heat up the rest of the Earth?

It is said that ACs are counterproductive in fight against global warming, in that while they may make the local environment temporarily livable, the greenhouse gases produced while making the electricity needed to operate them heat up the rest of the Earth by much more than the relief from the AC itself. By how much exactly is...

The answer is 1:1, conservation of energy means that 1kWh of energy going into the AC you introduce near as makes no difference 1kWh of heat energy into the world. The wonderful thing AC does is amplify that cooling or heating by moving heat from one place to another meaning modern systems can move 5kW of heat using only 1kW of energy. In this example 6kW is outside but you have removed 5kW from inside so it’s still just 1kW net.

If you want to reduce the impact of using your AC you need firstly insulate the crap out of your house to prevent heat escaping or entering. Then you can delve into the world of Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR), sealing all the air gaps in your home, at least quad-glazing, and finally passive cooling (sun shades over your windows).

Edit: sorry forgot to say for solar powered AC - which is 100% of my systems. I’m ignoring the grid for the above as the only systems I install are combined with at least 3x kW of solar and batteries so they never use grid power.

manualoverride,

Which is fine… until YouTube premium gets a massive price increase to try and capitalise on subscription apathy.
