@jillrhudy @bookstodon You are our reading champion, the ideal we all strive for. I cannot imagine how much trouble I would get in if I added Edelweiss, though often I am tempted.

Do you also use more than one library system? That's my crazy angle.

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@jillrhudy @bookstodon This sounds like the right plan to me: plenty of access, with room for spontaneous discovery.

Another really popular author whom I have never read anything by. I have a few of his & have been thinking about starting with this one. Fantasy is my least (tied with YA and self-help) favorite genre. That being said, I’m willing to give it a try.

Do you have any genres that you don’t like, but know of a certain book within that genre that you’d be up for trying? @bookstodon

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@likewise @bookstodon I'm willing to try out the edges of any genre. I don't read romance, but my friend writes dark romance, which is a better fit for me. I'm not a huge mystery/thriller/police procedural fan, though I have enjoyed Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series.

BTW, if I were to introduce someone to Neil Gaiman, I'd start them on The Ocean at The End of the Lane, though American Gods is also a fave.

@Abibliophobia @likewise @bookstodon It is my conviction that there is probably a book for each of us in every single genre. It's just finding that match.

@dbsalk @owlislost @ColesStreetPothole @bookstodon That's actually pretty awesome. I enjoy dad jokes, because they remind me of my departed dad, who was really good a them.

@bookstodon This graphic novel, Carole: What We Leave Behind, by Clément C. Fabre, which comes out on August 30, 2023, got me in all the feels. Highly recommend.

@Kay @bookstodon It is amazing how hard it can be to get so many great releases.

For instance, I've only gotten some UK releases through the authors, who've been kind enough to get their publishers to send me a copy. I'd love to get my friends to read certain books, but they don't have a US publishing contract.

I loved SCARLET so much that I read it last night in one sitting then came to work today and grabbed another Cogman, THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY. I didn't know I needed a Scarlet Pimpernel retelling with vampires, but this novel is oodles better than it sounds! What a ripping yarn! @bookstodon

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@jillrhudy added to TBR,. Thank you. Maybe we should do a list of great retellings?

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@jillrhudy I'm very interested to know which ones you've read. This is a good topic to get @likewise in on as well.

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@jillrhudy @likewise @bookstodon I will check out Thornridge, since I've read your other faves.

I recommend: The Chosen and the Beautiful, Nghi Vo (Great Gatsby retelling)

The Other Bennet Sister, Janice Hadlow (Pride and Prejudice)

The Gap of Time, Jeanette Winterson (Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale)

Persephone Underground, Jennifer Russon

@davep @jerry I mean, threads are more difficult here, so it might come in handy.

: May we please have a section called "Technically YA, but not that YA" or is that "New Adult" now?

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@jillrhudy @librarians I'm just wondering if a significant number of adult patrons skip the entire section of YA. There's some great stuff in there that they might actually like, if we could direct them, such as Book of Night, by Holly Black, or Star Splitter, by Matthew J. Kirby.

I feel like I could set up a display. And you are right on both counts: SJM should be in New Adult or just Adult Fic, and the criteria should not just be one data point. It's more a matter of style, though that's super subjective.

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@jillrhudy @librarians added to say that some of this is exacerbated by marketing. YA sells well, even if YA means nothing more than teen protagonist.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

Deciding on which among these three books by authors I should read next (these are from my Big Bad Wolf haul last June). Leaning towards Arudpragasam's novel set in Sril Lanka.

Has anyone read any of these books?

@bookstodon

kimlockhartga,

@luthien1126 @bookstodon They all look great. It would be hard to choose.

@CindySue @bookstodon That's when I pick up a graphic novel. Some are serious, and some are humorous. The quality and variety of graphic novel stories has gone up exponentially.

Fun examples:

Strange Planet, Nathan W. Pyle

Safely Endangered Comics, Chris McCoy

You're All Just Jealous of my Jetpack, Tom Gauld

Hey, I'm so honored to be here with the cool crew on the Beige Party Boat!

I'm not allowed to follow any more people until after 8PM, says whomever's dad is in charge of that kind of thing.

As a little intro, for those who don't know me: I am an avid reader and reviewer of mostly fiction. I really do love to learn about anything, so hit me with your area of interest/expertise. I love all the arts. I am a champion of democracy, rights and equity for all. I will post about politics, but also about my dog Baxter, my wife J, and odd happenings in my neighborhood, etc.

Every Tuesday, I post a curated list of new book releases which I believe bear consideration.

I love this community we're building here.

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@jnye I should really use the same ones each time. I just changed instances, so this coming Tuesday I will @ the bookstodon group: @bookstodon, and use and . Thank you for your interest!
