Been on this planet for a bit now; still trying to figure it out.

What keeps me informed, amused, or up at night: climate and the environment, news, media and journalism, human evolution and ancient history, politics, wildlife, photography, cycling, piano, guitar, español, français. Oh, and a sucker for bad puns.

Mythos by Stephen Fry. A modern retelling of the ancient Greek myths in Fry’s inimitable style.

this would be not great if the British Library wasn’t notorious for demanding ridiculous levels of ID evidence from its readers for registration. as it is, however, it is truly truly atrocious. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-67544504 @bookstodon

when do you abandon a book?
I'm not very good at it, but I might be about to do it again.

I notice more and more that the length of a book has become one of my criteria for choosing my next read. A long book represents a fair chunk of time and effort, and thus becomes a factor.

Recently, I brought a #book from an online seller. I had to the return it due to the low level damage that it had suffered in transit. This is not the first time that this has happend. I have noticed a marked deterioration in the quality of packaging used to transport #books bought online. Before envelopes were used that had bubbled wrapping inside and gave some sort of protection. Now one has to be thankful if paying 'top dollar' for a brand new #book and it arrives without any minor scrapes especially if it is just stuck in a standard cardboard envelope.

Somewhat, but not entirely related, I notice that the price of ebooks seems to be soaring these days.

Well I had another DNF. That makes two this year. And my second one is Three Body Problem. I'm 30% in and so confused I have no idea what's going on or who any of the characters are. 😞 @bookstodon

Here’s just the thing: William Golding’s Rites of Passage, a 1980 Booker Prize winner. Set on a former British man-of-war transporting migrants to Australia in the early 19th century, the novels explore themes of class and man's reversion to savagery when isolated, in this case, the closed society of the ship's passengers and crew.
The book is part of a trilogy, but stands on its own.

If this book can claim this, my next book on Cicero will be called: 'Cicero: the first man to ever give a speech'

Editing and boosting this because there's some great replies and Mastodon don't do quote tweets.

Has anyone else (re)turned to since the of social media began? The level of control over my feeds and the absence of algorithms (mostly speaking...) has been a breath of fresh air.

Especially interested in how fellow , , and other are using RSS. What feeds are you subscribed to and what readers are you using? @histodons @academicchatter

I'm using Feedly purely because I had a very old account gathering dust but I'm not super keen on its slant towards business users and its AI push. As for feeds, I've got two groups - one for general blogs and sites (e.g. @thesiswhisperer) and one for and journals.

I reinvigorated my RSS last fall after social media platforms became less reliable/suitable for straight news .
Using Inoreader. Very satisfied with it. Feeds are pretty eclectic: clumate, environment, politics, history, archaeology, and various diversions. Currently subscribed to about 90 feeds.
