As we all know, Roblox is garbage tier gameplay structured around psychological cues to get children to fill an endless pit with fake money bought with real money....
If you’re that kind of person, throw away the Xbox too, pure garbage. Everyone deserves the open environment of a PC where one can tinker and learn about the system, maybe even make some mods for games.
People who use GPLv3 want the code to stay open/libre under any circumstances. If this is the goal, why not use the AGPL instead, even for applications which are not served over a network?...
UPDATE: I found this issue explaining the relicensing of rust game engine Bevy to MIT + Apache 2.0 dual. Tldr: A lot of rust projects are MIT/Apache 2.0 so using those licenses is good for interoperability and upstreaming. MIT is known and trusted and had great success in projects like Godot....
Most of the rust projects I listed are replacements for stuff in the Linux ecosystem which are licensed (L)GPL. The most popular toolkits by far are GTK and QT, both LGPL
Suppose I want my project to have as many contributors as possible. Generally do you think more people are inclined to contribute (upstream) if the code is permissive or copyleft or do you think it doesn’t really matter?
I’m between distros and looking for a new daily driver for my laptop. What are people daily driving these days? Are there any new cool things to try?...
Do you have to watch a loading screen while system updates are applied like on regular Fedora or is it in the background?
Many flatpak apps are maintained by unofficial volunteers, and this isn’t always clear on Flathub; I view this as a security risk and would prefer to see a flag or warning of some kind when a flatpak is not maintained by the official upstream developer
On flathub.org there’s a blue checkmark for apps maintained by the devs
The image is downloaded and staged in the background of the active session. Upon reboot, the session seamlessly defaults to the staged image. For flatpaks, the updates happen immediately and without the need for a reboot.
That’s great to hear. Maybe I’ll give Silverblue a try
The term “open source” was confusing from the beginning. Insisting on “free software” has kind of an autistic vibe to it. “Libre” will probably not catch on. I like your idea of just calling it “GPL” or “MIT licenced” software etc
In addition to using text editors like vim or emacs and using a tiling window manager, what other programs do you use to reduce usage of the mouse? I recently discovered warpd which is similar to vimium’s hint mode but works globally.
There are countless Distros that do not always make it easy to choose the one that best suits each person’s needs and knowledge. This page, through a small test, proposes the Distro or Distros that best fit.
The GNOME Foundation is thrilled to announce the GNOME project is receiving €1M from the Sovereign Tech Fund to modernize the platform, improve tooling and accessibility, and support features that are in the public interest....
You’re not wrong. But you are talking about the extreme who won’t use anything non-FOSS. In general, it is fair to say that all proprietary software is malware.
Fedora IS the most modern distro. First to adopt pipewire, systemd, enables flatpaks by default and btrfs. Probably other things I don’t know. Being first is one of their core goals
No one is allowed to change and fix it but the developer, thus you are harmed by being dependent on the will and motivations of the dev. Increasing dependence is always malus
Update…Per Microsoft’s instructions, disabled all tracking protections in Safari and requested desktop mode and it works. Their instructions say turn protections back on after using teams… 😐...
The reason I gave up on MP3’s and subscribed to Spotify was because Spotify was easy. I’ve been listening “Iron Maiden - Empire of the Clouds” song every day and like a week ago, its removed. This was the last straw for me. Right now I’m trying to find “Stremio” of the music world. Can someone assist?...
If you want to get emerged into the linux world and get broad understanding then I recommend watching videos on youtube by DistroTube. Adjacent, kinda more advanced channels are Luke Smith and Brodie Robertson.
If you just want to use linux and be done with that topic, you can use linux mint. What you have to know is that you get all software from the software center, not from websites. The rest should be very familiar.
You don’t have to fix every issue, there are also other volunteers who might look at it.
If the reproducible instructions aren’t clear enough or are missing, just ask for more info. If they can’t deliver on that, close it or just move on and other people might take care of it
Thank you so much, comrades! I am feeling pretty comfortable with linux mint, and now would like some suggestions for some absolutely necessary FOSS or free license software for the OS. So far I have the standard, Firefox, ThunderBird, LibreOffice, yada yada. Thank you again to everyone on the linux comm! sankara-salute
Find a program to work on and fix issues that interest you. Start small. It is satisfying to fulfill peoples feature requests, even if the feature isn’t helpful to you. You know that you made this person happy and there are probably more people who wanted that feature too
