Some of these are lemmy-specific perhaps, more mainstream outside of this place:

  1. Free markets work better than anything else we have practically tried so far
  2. Neo-marxism is a problem
  3. LGBTQIA+ activist are overcorrecting, especially for TQIA+
  4. Palestine is a fascist state
  5. USA and EU have problems, some of them big ones, but they are generally a force for good on this planet
  6. Young people use smart devices too much, like older people
  7. Internet services in general are fucking up our minds big time, including those that attempt to be benevolent like Lemmy and Mastodon. They all eat attention energy, which is an extremely scarce resource.
  8. All drugs should be decriminalized, most of them should be legalized (paraphrasing Bill Hicks, some should be mandatory)
  9. Karl Popper didn’t quite mean what antifa thinks he meant
  10. Mainstream religions, even if factually and is some parts also ethically full of shit, generally work well in making individuals strive for the best they can
  11. Piratism is unethical but can be excused when legally provided services suck
  12. Open source is a vastly superior method of developing software in a global sense

All people ask for is to be treated equally to everyone else.

I’m sure you’re aware that this is not at all what I’m talking about. Equal treatment for all is a 100% fine demand and should be complied with immediately.

What have asexuals ever done to you?

It’s incorrect to assume that I have been affected by these people if I’m not happy about some aspects of what some activists are doing. But you are correct that I should’ve probably left A out of that jumble of letters, since they’re probably the least disruptive/demanding of all groups.

fosforus, (edited )

Did you ask me to elaborate? I can elaborate.

It’s run by a fascist party, Hamas, who was voted into power by the people. It suppresses political dissent, restricts basic human freedoms, enforces conservative religious norms, rejects modernism, and thrives on military conflict. I’m going mostly by Umberto Eco’s definition of fascism, perhaps yours is different.

edit seems like parent asked me to elaborate, suggested that I’m unable to, then blocked me when I elaborated

fosforus, (edited )

Yeah, I’m aware of that dog whistle and will try to avoid it. But a fact is that LGB rights have mostly been cemented in all the non-regressive parts of the world, and the rest of the letters (well, T at least) are still fighting. Some parts of that fight is legit (like I said elsewhere, demanding equal treatment is 100% fine), but some of it overcorrects.

But this thread was asking for non-popular opinions, so I guess I scored here. Here’s another: I don’t think being called transphobic is a much of an insult. Trans is weird and it’s normal to feel weird about it. Translating that feeling into denying their rights is deeply wrong, nevertheless. I believe trans activists should work on this angle more (perhaps they do already? I don’t follow them enough to know for sure), I believe that would win them support more easily from a wider audience, when compared to a strategy that demands acceptance on top of mere tolerance.

fosforus, (edited )

That’s a great non-popular opinion! Personally, I thought that episode was the only one worth watching, especially after playing the actual game. The other episodes had great acting and direction, but they were mostly just a rehash of what I’ve seen before and that’s boring.

fosforus, (edited )

The things they (some of them/the activists) are demanding and which I feel are overcorrecting (i.e. go past just equal rights) include demands by legislation to force the pronoun issue; demands for overriding by default the will of parents when deciding healthcare (psychological and physical) of their children; demands of bathroom/dressing room usage and demands of being allowed to participate in sports in the series they identify as instead of in the series their body is. These are not black and white issues and I’m not claiming that they are.

Thing is, demanding merely equal rights for trans people is not quite enough, because some of the things they need/want are things that nobody else needs. So I think it’s not quite honest to say that they just want equal rights. In this way LGB rights are way simpler, because as far as I can tell they just wanted the exact same things as straight people already had.

But I want to reiterate that where trans people et al lack equal rights their fight is 100% legit, without any question.

fosforus,

Israel is not apartheid, and it’s obviously not committing genocide. Hamas is for genocide.

fosforus,

They are bombing Hamas terrorists, their enemy, not refugees. You must remember that Hamas fighters and civilians look exactly the same, and they deliberately lurk among the civilians. This is obviously not genocide.

I’ll give you a hint in form of a question that may lead you towards the truth: What happens to the amount of population in a genocide?

fosforus,

Consider the question, dude. What happens to the population in a genocide?

fosforus,

I’m guessing you’re gonna say that there is no genocide if not all or most of the people are killed, because then their people have survived. But, genocide also incorporates cultural genocide.

No, I’m saying that population doesn’t grow during a genocide.

That’s the fate the Israeli state wants for Palestine. It is still technically genocide.

But… Palestinian Arabs are >20% of the population of Israel. You’re making absolutely no sense.

fosforus,

Does it really sound like that? Should you perhaps try to steelman my argument in your head?

fosforus,

I feel like there’s some weird context here. Why does Stefanik want to get that “yes” and why are they reluctant to say it? Would it be a declaration of some university policy that would lead to suppressing the demonstrations or what?

fosforus,

Yup, head in the sand. That works.

Ethereum transactions are claimed to use about 1-22 Wh per transaction. Not sure where the wide range comes from, but at least it’s quite a lot better then Bitcoin’s ~700-2000kWh per transaction. Ethereum is comparable to how much a credit card transaction is said to spend, although those figures only take into account power needed for their computer systems. Blockchain currencies replace a lot more infrastructure than just the computer systems, so I think it’s reasonable to say that Eth2 is more energy efficient than credit cards.

That’s not enough to make it a replacement for credit cards yet, but it’s a good lowest of the low barriers to be crossed to qualify as a replacement.

In a few years, we’ll probably be spending a huge amount of power for AI also, and there doesn’t seem to be any Proof-of-Stake -like technology to help with that. Good times.

fosforus,

Indeed, sir.

fosforus,

I’m having the exact opposite path. I’m thinking Alan Wake 2 might be a timeless masterpiece, whereas Baldur’s Gate 3 seems like such a rehash of a genre I’m totally fed up with. So even with all the praise, I haven’t bothered to check it out yet, and will probably wait for a >50% sale before going there.

Entirely possible that both games are good though.

fosforus, (edited )

If it’s neon colors everywhere and synthwave/punk, I’m in.

fosforus,

I wish they would tease a Steam release so I could actually pay for this game.

fosforus,

Never played Tribes before but looks very interesting. I’m gonna get wrecked in online, it seems.

fosforus,

Plus the highest debt/GDP ratio in the world by far.

edit Oh wait, Venezuela topped them. Well done, socialism!

fosforus, (edited )

I mean it’s not great what they’ve done in Gaza, but just to recalibrate your senses a bit, this is what happens when a nation actually commits genocide against a weaker people inside its borders: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyghur_genocide

A significant metric to look at is population growth. Gaza strip is one of the densest population areas in the world, and it has been growing rapidly. This is, incidentally, the reason why most of their population is under-age. In Uyghur areas, in contrast, population has been diminishing in growing rates.

Of course, you shouldn’t also ignore the forced labor, political indoctrination, forced sterilization, forced contraception, forced abortion. I don’t think Israel has done any of these? Israel has destroyed some mosques in their attacks, whereas China has razed or damaged 16 thousand mosques in Uyghur areas. Granted, the area is much larger, so there are probably more mosques in there also. But you should note that China is not at war against Uyghurs, and hasn’t been attacked by them – they’re just destroying them.

Here’s another: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor

And en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambodian_genocide

(Why is it almost always the people who call themselves communists?)

And of course there’s the Holocaust, but I suppose it’s not classy to refer to that in this case.

fosforus, (edited )

Perhaps all the people who would downvote me have already blocked me ;-)

But seriously, this is not whataboutism. It’s an appeal to recalibrate and come to senses, and most importantly, not dilute an important and serious concept like genocide. Even what happened/is happening in Ukraine is probably not a genocide even though I’m happily 100% against Russia.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful legal analysis, you should check this out: thenation.com/…/harvard-law-review-gaza-israel-ge…

This seemed like a high quality analysis by a respectable academic, then the very first source I checked out turned out to be an amazing exaggeration. The article states

Tens of thousands are injured, and over 45% of homes in Gaza have been destroyed.

So I check the source, which is a paywalled WSJ article. Already the title of the article is

At Least 45% of Housing Units Destroyed or Damaged in Gaza

Destroyed or damaged. Should I check the other sources for similar “mistakes”? Perhaps I just got lucky and found the only bullshit reference from this article written by a Harvard Law School PhD graduate?

Or perhaps Harvard Law Review was onto something when they didn’t publish it and I would be wasting my time looking through all of them instead of just trusting them on this.

I’m very comfortable calling the campaign against Gaza in the last few weeks genocide

Why?

fosforus,

What if somebody bullies me at school and I genocide him a little bit?

fosforus, (edited )

What about … examples

Sure, many of these happened in a time where communism was still more like a theory (or not even that yet) than anything tried in practice. People who called themselves communist did a lot of these in a single century, most of them after WW2.

Besides, Pol Pot wasn’t much of a communist

To be fair, I said people “who call themselves communist”.

fosforus, (edited )

You looked at my reply to your comment and thought I was being serious?

fosforus,

Yes, my apologies. School bullying is a serious problem.

fosforus,

Pol Pot pretended to be a communist, until it no longer suited him and he had them killed.

He was the leader of the Communist Party of Kampuchea from 1963-1981, at which point it was rebranded as the Party of Democratic Kampuchea, which he lead until 1985. Also that new party was communist. The Cambodian genocide was roughly 1975-1979.

Are you just defining people who are absolutely horrible not communists even though they call themselves communist, are allied with other governments who call themselves communist, and execute similar policies as them? I mean I get the impulse, I also get plenty of negative feelings when I think about pro-free market, pro-freedom politicians who commit atrocities or say stupid shit and would rather that those people don’t exist. Sadly, real world doesn’t always like us.

fosforus,

Dunno if it’s exactly a roguelike, but I’ve been playing Moonring lately. It’s a homage to early Ultima-games from one of the makers of Fable. And it’s free on Steam. Feels pretty great so far.

fosforus,

This is the best comic I’ve seen this year.

fosforus,

Jussi Halla-Aho (mentioned by Ninmi also below) was just visiting Kyiv to commemorate Holodomor.

fosforus,

I was kinda worried for a while that since kids these days don’t really have music as a tool to rebel against their parents, and as for shocking via clothing or something like goth or satanism… they’re just recycling 80s and 90s all over again. So how are they gonna do it?

Not so worried anymore. They always find something. And not just from language. The ways to be fucking idiots are endless and as a really novel thing, kids these days go up to 30 year olds.

fosforus,

I mean if this is his way of coping with his complete fuckup and preparing his people for the withdrawal, this might be a good thing. But I have to be a bit pessimistic that that is not where he’s going with this.

fosforus,

I kinda agree with some of the sentiment here, but if you hate the city, is it necessary to live there? I think it’s usually even more expensive than outside the city so you cannot explain it with money.

fosforus,

By kinda agreeing with some of the sentiment there?

fosforus,

This is just him repeating Argentina’s position on those islands which has been constant since 1833. If he hadn’t said this, that would have been a change.

For instance, check out these pieces of news from 10 years ago:

fosforus,

Based on everything I’ve heard of it, this seems a bit too high.

fosforus,

Netanyahu has gone on record saying he has helped prop Hamas up in order to sow division between Gaza and the West Bank.

Do you have a source for this? I couldn’t find it, although this was pretty close: timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up-…

fosforus,

It’s not easy, but I think people should have a value system that’s independent from how others behave.

fosforus,

This comic brings me hope. That some day, if I work really hard, I might be a web comic artist as well.
