Late-dxed/IDed friends:

Once you realized you were autistic, did you encounter overwhelming and overloading situations that you remembered "dealing" with much better before you learned you were autistic? Like learning you were autistic somehow changed how you processed these kinds of situations?

I'd love to (and frankly, need to) hear your stories. Please share if you're comfortable 💚🙏

@dave Wow! Yes, totally. So many examples, but one simple one: air travel. I think it’s partly that coping mechanisms no longer work once you know they’re coping mechanisms @actuallyautistic

@dave But another, more positive aspect is being able to lean into your true identity and no longer seeing it as just your job to “accommodate yourself” to a world built for allistic brains @actuallyautistic

@housepanther @dave Yes, for me it’s the sensory overwhelm of going through security etc. and the anxiety around seat choice and crowded boarding. Once the plane’s off the ground, I’m usually ok: unless I’ve ended up in a Bad Seat (my last flight was so awful I’m finally looking into what accommodations the airlines offer for my next one) @actuallyautistic

It is totally OK to on the one hand to say that being autistic is a struggle in our society (by no fault of our own) and also be absolutely proud and empowered by embracing our autistic selves.

Life has nuance.

@actuallyautistic @theautisticcoach You can’t have either without the other, I reckon. Recognising that our being autistic can be a struggle liberates us to embrace our autistic identity with pride, rather than seeing ourselves as “broken neurotypicals”. Conversely, taking pride in our identity can reveal to us the ways in which we experience difficulties at the hands of a society built by and for neurotypicals

The autistic urge to reveal everything you know about a topic you like the second someone brings it up, feeling as though you may burst if you don’t, even though the person you’re speaking to probably has only a mild interest in the subject and will be shocked by your passion.

That was literally me today. We had a session at our offsite on using AI in the workplace, and a colleague afterwards asked me what I thought about the potential risks of AI, so I immediately started infodumping about the Paperclip Problem and Roku’s Basilisk. He was, um, surprised 🤣 @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic

Insurance company callback bot asked me for my "full name", which reminded me how for most of my life I would answer this by dutifully reciting my full name including middle name, before belatedly realising that, most of the time, when (allistic) people ask for "full name", they mean "your main forename and your surname". Except for those occasions when, no, they actually do mean the full name. It's a fun guessing game! @actuallyautistic

@theautisticcoach I’d had growing suspicions, but the (quite literally, out loud, while sitting on a train) “oh shit!” moment of self-realisation came when I saw the list of so-called “female autistic” traits in Devon Price’s Unmasking Autism. This would have been around October last year. I was formally diagnosed in January this year. @actuallyautistic
