From last month’s announcement:

"I grew up watching Star Trek with my dad who is single handedly responsible for turning me into a fan,” said Mescudi. “The most important thing to me is to be as authentic as possible. Star Trek’s mission has always been about having a hopeful future and when I was first approached about this project it was the perfect marriage of all the things I believe in – being brave and a hero by doing what’s right and fighting for freedom. I can’t wait to share my love of this incredible franchise with the world.”

Why does it need “justification”? What would it mean to be “more relevant to Star Trek than any of us”?

They would have had to have had a previous arbitrary marketing campaign in order for this one to be authentic? I’m struggling to understand the boundaries of acceptability here.

I wouldn’t get too excited - the Manitoba PCs did better in the election than some polls predicted, so there’s not much of an indication that the pivot to the right cost them anything.

The Prodigy erasure continues to be a thing but I don’t think that’s ending anytime soon.

There were Prodigy characters in last week’s short…

I can see the argument that it’s splitting hairs, but he’s promoting the book, not his acting work or Star Trek as a franchise.

Boimler does say he’s trying to remember ”every single crew member’s name,” but one of the people in his quiz is Honus the bartender.

Civilian crew are still crew!

Shaxs’ puzzle depicts captain Malcolm Reed and the NX-01 Enterprise.

Huh…I could’ve sworn it was a picture of a blank bulkhead.

Are you saying Guinan was crew aboard the Enterprise D?

Absolutely.

Icheb was never a security officer.

Who?

I think they would likely have significant storage and bandwidth needs - more significant than the examples provided.

The word “easily” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

I would argue that Prodigy is very Starfleet-centric.

At some point, I’d like to see a gag about how the Romulans seem to hang out in the Neutral Zone all the time.

Or were they secretly hunting for the alien ship?

It was this - they’re investigating the destroyed vessels.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Yeah they’re basic, over-the-counter no-spill mugs, generally for use on boats.

I said “no spill,” but I think “no tip” will actually yield better results.

Tom Mulcair: Why Anthony Rota had no choice but to resign (www.ctvnews.ca)

Anthony Rota had no choice but to resign as House Speaker after he invited a Nazi veteran to Parliament. But, as former NDP leader Tom Mulcair writes in a column for CTVNews.ca, if history is going to retain the profound embarrassment caused by his mistake, it should also recognize the contributions Rota has made to democratic...

He can’t fire the speaker, but he can kick him out of the Liberals.

Kicking a former Speaker out of the party because of actions taken as Speaker would be a terrible precedent.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Because the Speaker of the House is a non-partisan position.

Pretty weird move from an education minister, too, unless Polish politics are very different from ours.

PCs make opposition to landfill search a central facet of campaign as Manitoba election day nears (www.cbc.ca)

As the Oct. 3 election day in Manitoba draws closer, the Progressive Conservatives are now actively campaigning on their opposition to searching a Winnipeg-area landfill for the remains of two Indigenous women police presume are victims of an alleged serial killer....

This same ad showed up in my mail yesterday - it wasn’t just in the paper.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Who are you asserting had prior knowledge of this and said nothing?

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Trust would have seen someone point out “This person is not who you think he is.” and the speaker realizing “Oh shit, you’re right. We had better cancel these ceremonies.”

My interpretation of this is that someone would have had to know that this person is not who he thought he was, and given him the heads-up.

Speaker's Nazi veteran invite 'profoundly embarrassing' Trudeau says, as Rota faces calls to resign (www.ctvnews.ca)

Tensions flared in the House of Commons on Monday over opposition calls for House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota to resign after apologizing to the House of Commons for inviting, recognizing and leading the chamber in a standing ovation for a man who fought for a Nazi unit during the Second World War.

This seems as good a place as any to say that I’ve seen actual Parliamentary-minded people (Kady O’Malley, for one) point out that it would actually be inappropriate for the government to have any say in who the Speaker invites to the HoC. This is something that Andrew Scheer, as a former Speaker himself, knows.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Yeah, I think he should definitely step down as Speaker.

Could you elaborate on this? The article mentions both an e-mail address and associated Telegram group.
