Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

Anyone else out there who actually really loved Discovery's S1 style of Klingons?

I am the kind of person who enjoys “big weird” scifi like Stanisław Lem. Stories about trying to relate to and find common ground with something so alien that the prospect of even understanding is basically hopeless. Star Trek usually doesn’t do stories that, which makes sense as it often uses alien races as allegories or...

I thought those early Klingons were super weird and scary because they were just so alien.

Absolutely. And the costuming choices they made, and the different aesthetic approaches to each Great House, show an amazing amount of thought and care. They’re one big, scary, alien, fractured family.

we’re the odd ones for saying “but wait how is this supposed to take place in the same timeline?”

I just think it points to a failure of imagination more than anything else.

I really think a lot of the support for the Klingon redesign and other revisionist aspects of Discovery/the current era of trek it spawned comes from a “but the Original Series is cringe fail and LAME.

Huge if true. Can you provide some examples of people saying that? I can’t seem to find any in this thread.

Who said anything about rules? I’m just wondering if what you’re saying has any basis in, you know, reality.

If it’s for Star Trek day, it might be a single event, and not a wide release.

Those “Dominion War” 2-parters are odd - the TNG books are an original story, but the DS9 ones are adaptations of “Call to Arms” and “Sacrifice of Angels”.

I think it’s one of those things that the people who are into it are really into it.

Personally, I just like signal-boosting merch.

Space CTV Sci-Fi has a “special presentation” on the schedule tonight - I’m guessing it’s this episode.

I’m locking this because it’s turning into an episode discussion, and we already have one of those.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

I can confirm that this episode is live on Crave, as well as Paramount+ in the relevant regions.

My expectations for this one were high, but I’m really impressed with how well they pulled it off. Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid did a great job of dialing their performances back just enough, and the SNW cast went just a little bit broader.

Always good to get the full television experience.

The Lower Decks/Strange New Worlds crossover episode (titled “Those Old Scientists”) originally scheduled to be released next Thursday will be available to stream today, starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on Paramount+ in the U.S. and all Paramount+ international markets.

CTV Sci-Fi has a “special presentation” slotted for this evening - I can’t imagine what else that would be. I’d imagine it will be on Crave by then.

That’s a fun sequence. I’m really looking forward to Callum Keith Rennie and Eve Harlow joining this cast.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what this “scavenger hunt” adventure is all about - I think it’s a great fit for this cast.

So, canonically speaking, “Lower Decks” is right around the time Starfleet would find out about the impending Romulan supernova and begin redeploying the fleet for the evacuation.

Maybe a little heavy for this show, but also a convenient excuse to move the Cerritos to the front lines?

Watching now - so far, the highlight is when he randomly generates a Horta helm officer and decides to roll with it.

Of course, it’s technically not possible because of his setting, but it’s pretty dang funny.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

It is both geared towards children and quite enjoyable at any age.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Oof. Here’s hoping that’s just a technical snag.

‘Dovercourt’ - perhaps aka Section 31 movie event - hits the ‘Rumoured’ portion DGC Ontario Hotlist (trekcentral.net)

The Directors’ Guild of Ontario hotlist is a fairly reliable source for production guild news. Star Trek preproduction in the Greater Toronto Area usually shows up there before any official announcements of production dates....

In what way have they ever been portrayed as the good guys?

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Sloan said they were an official branch of Starfleet Intelligence in his very first episode. That was never contradicted.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

It’s not a phrase people use to indicate they’re lying - it suggests a long story or a complicated arrangement, but a fundamentally truthful one. This is backed up at the end of the episode, when Starfleet Command tells Sisko to take a hike when he asks about S31.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

If Starfleet Command is actively “looking the other way,” it’s a legitimate organization.

I thought this one was…fine. I don’t think it will go down in history as one of the more logical episodes, but it told the story it was trying to tell.

I do wish they’d given Spock an actual reason to approach Kirk and Uhura in that final scene. I get that they wanted to commit that meeting to film, but it was strange for him to just sort of…wander over.

The Bussards are an emergency backup system for use when fuel replenishment via tanker is not possible, and are not normally active.

Reddit seems all doom and gloom on the topic but what about Lemmy? And the future of Star Trek?

I saw someone on Reddit wondering why the community was so sure of Trek going dark again with Paramount not doing so well financially. Seeing the response was unfortunate as most people feel that it might be a bad time for Trek. And I guess it makes sense with the Hollywood strikes as well....

Neither Voyager nor Enterprise were syndicated - they were UPN shows.
