Not sure why, but I just can't ever love Black Christmas (1974) as much as so many others do.
The killer seems more ridiculous than scary, although a talented vocal mimic, the kills aren't very good, and the characters are a mixed bag of people I can't bring myself to enjoy onscreen (with the notable exception of the brilliantly sardonic Kidder). This was my third or foutth attempt, but it remains a 7/10 for me.

📽️ What's a horror movie that you feel is so: striking, unique, disturbing, profound, &/or beautiful that it transcends to the level of ART?
(Not for just a scene, or moments, or even a performance, but for the ENTIRE film.)

Four that immediately occurred to me:

The Shining
The Devils
The Wolf House
There Will Be Blood

I can think of more but I'm curious what YOU all think...

I have to go eat & do stuff but I'll be back on later to see what you all said!

@stina_marie @horror - the production design throughout is equal parts gorgeous and terrifying (when you consider the ramifications of it all).

The thirty first, and final, recommendation for the month is one that many will dislike. It’s Brightburn, a simple and entertainingly gruesome tale that gives us a version of the Superman origin tale if he had also been a bad seed.

Don't worry. I haven't forgotten. The thirtieth recommendation for the month is . . . Pin.
You may have heard of Pin, but you should definitely watch it if you haven't already. It's a superb psychological horror, and would pair up nicely with May.

Nearing the finish line, your twenty ninth recommendation for the month is The Haunted, a 1991 TV movie that everyone remembers . . . even if they don't remember the actual title.

@stina_marie @horror - whether they are good or not, my partner has agreed that we will have some horror at the cinema together later, with both The Exorcist: Believer and Five Nights At Freddy's lined up. After getting along to Suitable Flesh last night, it's setting up to be a great little pre-Halloween weekend 😃

If they had any balls, the makers of the next Scream movie would have Sidney revealed as the killer, motivated to kill off people who have been able to profit from her story while she has been overshadowed by the iconic mask.

Your twenty seventh recommendation for the month is a film I have yet to see, but it's from the director of Terrified and has had some rave reviews already. When Evil Lurks has landed on Shudder now. Check it out, and I hope you enjoy it.

That's me done. At last. I FINALLY watched The Haunting Of Hill House.
Yeah, I thought it was pretty great, although I think the very last scene were almost undone by trying to be a bit too cute.

A lot of it is reminscent of Alien, but there are good character details to spot and superb production design throughout making the environment feel very real and allowing viewers to keep a good grasp on the geography of everything.

Your twenty third recommendation for the month is Berberian Sound Studio, a psychological horror movie that will work best for fans of giallo movies (considering the references and context) and/or fans of foley work. Or fans of Toby Jones. And who doesn't like Toby Jones?

Your twenty first recommendation for the month is Evil Aliens, a comedy horror sci-fi with some great gore gags and memorable use of a song made famous by The Wurzels. It's far from perfect, but writer-directro Jake West does a great job with limited resources (and he may reappear here tomorrow).

I don't like the pop culture practice of binging a Thing all at once and plan on watching one episode of Flanagan's THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER a night... I'm hoping fervently that I'm not going to be spoiled about the show until I manage to watch it all 🤞

Are you going to binge, or is anyone weird like me 😁?

@horror

SaltiredPopcorn,
@SaltiredPopcorn@bbq.snoot.com avatar

@stina_marie @horror - I do like a binge, but I have also got used to once again waiting to enjoy show episodes once a week (helped by the Apple TV shows and Better Call Saul release schedule, as well as Chucky and The Last Of Us).

SaltiredPopcorn,
@SaltiredPopcorn@bbq.snoot.com avatar

@stina_marie @horror

Also . . . ummmmm . . . I should really get around to The Haunting Of Hill House before any of the later shows anyway 😮 🙃

SaltiredPopcorn,
@SaltiredPopcorn@bbq.snoot.com avatar

@stina_marie @horror - while I am as happy as you are for people to have the choice, it's infuriating to know that there are people out there who just want to be first, and sometimes then spoil it for others.
I totally understand being so far behind schedule that it's on me, but some people will spoil stuff within minutes or hours, ruining it for those yet to make the time in their day for something they have been looking forward to.

SaltiredPopcorn,
@SaltiredPopcorn@bbq.snoot.com avatar

@stina_marie @horror - haven't read the book either. Love the original film though. The Robert Wise film. I am not daft enough to even joke about it being from Jan de Bont 😂

@bookstodon Now that it's October, let's do a Five Fave Modern Horror book list.

My contemporary spooky reads top five (in no particular order):

  1. You Should Have Left, Daniel Kehlmann

  2. A Head Full of Ghosts, Paul Tremblay

  3. Experimental Film, Gemma Files

  4. The Croning, Laird Barron

  5. Revival, Stephen King

This idea was @kimlockhartga's & I think it's a great one. Share your faves!
