Sept 17: How do you promote your writing?

Instead of answering, I went through all the responses thus far and made a spreadsheet of the answers. (This is absolutely non-scientific and possibly inaccurate, plus there's no data as to how well these strategies worked, but hey, I was curious and thought maybe others might be interested too.)

I also have a list of "Other" answers that didn't fit neatly in these boxes or struck me in some way-- I'll link those next.

@skaeth TBF, I was being brief to fit the space. I have also used sales, Instagram, and reviewers, although I've found direct engagement via social media/word of mouth the most productive. I would go to conventions in COVID-safe times, but there haven't been any since I started selling under this name. I dunno if any of that affects your stats! 😄

Rubbish news, everyone!

After 2 years on sale with no objections, Oviposition has been removed from Amazon. They say is violates their ToS, but I can't see any way that's true.

They allow erotica and it's all my own work.

I've responded to ask what they think it violated, but don't know if that will make any difference.

I'm not sure there's much you folks can do to help me, but maybe consider buying one of my other books?

@AimeeMaroux They have bloody book categories for erotica - this is what makes me so mad. It was in the erotica category. It had a warning for non-con. I know for a fact they sell countless non-erotic books with non-con.

But they just replied to confirm that my content was in violation without saying why. I'm livid!

I was thinking about getting one for my Medium account (seeing as the partner programme is pointless) but it's hard to do without revealing 'real me' contact details. Ko-fi doesn't work for that reason, as that connects to my PayPal. I have heard of https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ but their website doesn't say much about how it works.

@AimeeMaroux I just find most people I sell to strongly prefer Amazon, even when I offer options. Whereas I've only had one person say they would only buy if it wasn't on Amazon.

Maybe it's easier to just pull out of Amazon if you're more established, but for me it's absolutely clear that I would lose the vast majority of my sales.

I'm always surprised when people say they read a 20-25,000 word story in an hour or something.

Like, sure, it's a short book, but I'd still read it over a couple of days unless I were really gripped.

I know I'm slower than most academics, but I have an Eng Lit degree. I don't think I read that slowly.

When I freelanced I could proofread around 5,000 words an hour (depending on complexity); I haven't timed myself outside that, tho.

Any other 'slow' readers out there? Tell me I'm not alone!

@AimeeMaroux tbf, I think I'm a slightly above average speed reader, for the general population, I'm just not a FAST reader and... I like it that way. Like you say, if you're enjoying a book, it's no bad thing if it keeps going - I want to KEEP enjoying it as long as possible.

I can't read a novella in a day unless it's like, all I do. But I wouldn't want to. Sad times for a whole book to be gone in just a few hours.

@AimeeMaroux @smutstodon I think the majority of my sales have been through Mastodon rather than Twitter since June - a lot of people have told me directly that they bought in response to posts here.

It's getting increasingly hard to get any kind of engagement there. That said, I'm much less established than you and so it's easier for small-scale results to make a difference and feel huge.

A lot of the hashtags on Twitter, like WritersLift involve people mindlessly RT-ing each other but not actually reading the tweets and clicking through. Here people actually seem to read, favourite, and engage in conversation.

The main one is a personal tumblr with all the ecclecticness that involves. The rubyjones one is everything I judge a bit too explicit for the main one (a fine line, but eg cock jokes and memes) book promo, and stuff that may be of interest to readers of my books (eg reblogs of tentacle art).
